    "Sorry for messaging." I see this phrase multiple times per day from Filipino team members. They are not apologizing for a mistake. They are apologizing for what they thought was a hassle they are bringing in. This is not about confidence. This is about culture. Filipino workplace communication emphasizes smooth relationships and deference to authority. The concept of "utang na loob" (debt of gratitude) runs deep. When someone helps you or employs you, maintaining that relationship through politeness becomes paramount. Foreign managers often misread this. They see frequent apologies and assume the person lacks confidence or feels anxious about their performance. That is not what is happening. Some examples I see constantly: "Sorry for the inconvenience" when asking a legitimate clarifying question. "Apologies for the delay" when the response came 2 hours later, not 2 days. Multiple apologies in a single message for what amounts to normal work communication. The challenge is this. Remote work requires directness. When someone hits a blocker, I need them to state it clearly and immediately. Not apologize three times before getting to the actual issue. This is what I think works: Model the behavior you want. When someone apologizes unnecessarily, respond with "No need to apologize. This is normal work communication." Reframe apologies into statements. If someone says "Sorry to bother you but I am blocked," teach them to say "I am blocked on X and need guidance on Y." Create explicit norms. Tell your team directly: "Asking questions is part of your job. You never need to apologize for doing your job." Acknowledge the cultural context. Explain that global business communication values directness and that this does not mean disrespect. The goal is not erasing cultural communication styles. The goal is helping your team understand that directness serves everyone better in remote work environments. Frequent apologies are not a performance issue. They are a cultural communication pattern that you can help reshape through clear expectations and consistent modeling.

    Teams don’t break because of big failures. They break because people stop seeing each other.🤦🏻 A recent study from Wharton Neuroscience Initiative found that a two-minute dyadic exercise - where pairs silently gaze into each other’s eyes and reflect on shared human experiences - significantly improved feelings of closeness and prosocial behaviour, even in virtual settings. Why does such a modest act matter?🤔 Because remote and hybrid work have stripped many of the non-verbal cues that teams rely on for trust, alignment and meaningful collaboration. Without consistent signals of presence and mutual attention, teams slow down. They hesitate. They lose momentum. From a leadership perspective this has three clear implications: 1️⃣ Trust isn’t optional: Research shows that teams rank trust and communication among their top drivers of performance. When trust is missing, three in four cross-functional teams underperform. So trust is not “nice to have”. It is a performance imperative. 2️⃣ Presence matters more than process: You can layer tools and workflows. But if you don’t restore human presence - visible attention, mutual recognition, real-time interaction - the tools won’t bridge the gap. Leaders must build moments of presence, not just more meetings. 3️⃣ Small acts scale big results: You don’t need an expensive platform or overhaul to begin. A weekly structured check-in where participants look at each other, reflect silently and then speak gives teams a refresh of connection. Over time, these efforts add up into higher clarity, fewer misunderstandings, faster decisions. Action steps for leaders to consider: 👉🏻 Set aside 5 minutes at the start of key meetings for teams to look at each other (in-person or video) and share one non-work observation. 👉🏻 In hybrid and remote teams, require video ON during synchronisation moments. Encourage but don’t mandate heavy rituals - the goal is presence, not performance. 👉🏻 Track not just what gets done, but how people feel: ask “Did you feel seen and understood this week?” If answers slide below a threshold, intervene. 👉🏻 Make trust practices repeatable. Even after workflows are digitised, schedule a monthly “presence reset” to rebuild bonds, especially when change is high. If we stopped chasing vanity metrics like tools deployed or meetings held, we could instead aim for one impact: teams that trust each other enough to move fast and lean on each other without hesitation.     Neurodiversity 101: Making meetings more neuroinclusive Meetings are meant to bring people together to share ideas, make decisions, and build connection. Yet, for many neurodivergent colleagues and often for others too meetings can be overwhelming, confusing, or simply unproductive. Have you ever been to a meeting and wondered why you were there or what was expected of you? Whether online or in person, more inclusive meetings benefit everyone. They create clarity, structure, and safety for diverse thinkers to contribute meaningfully. Here’s how to make meetings more neuroinclusive: 1. Clarity before you start Share the purpose, agenda, timing, and who’s attending where possible in advance. Make clear if attendance is optional or essential and what preparation, if any, is expected. Sending materials early gives everyone time to process and plan. 2. Structure supports inclusion Outline how questions will be handled and what turn-taking looks like. Minute key actions and share them promptly. End by explaining what happens next. Predictability reduces anxiety and ensures accountability. Be aware of the 'quiet ones' in the room and ensure everyone can participate. 3. Inclusive communication Use clear, plain language avoid “acronym fests.” Pause regularly to check understanding and invite clarification. Remember, silence doesn’t mean disengagement; some people need more time to formulate ideas. Some people may need time after the meeting to come back with their responses too. 4. Online inclusivity Show participants how to use platform features like captions, transcripts, or chat. Encourage written contributions and offer the option to keep cameras off to reduce sensory load/allow movement/ or just not seeing your own face all the time! Provide recordings or transcripts afterwards so people can review at their own pace. 5. Make space for every voice Avoid putting people on the spot. Allow time after the meeting for those who prefer to reflect before responding. Remember: the “quiet ones” may hold the most valuable insights. **Small changes, big impact Microaggressions — such as dismissing someone’s idea or using “humour” that excludes can and do erode trust. Inclusion grows when meetings feel psychologically safe and respectful. Neuroinclusive meetings are not just a “nice to have.” This is a universal design concept in action. They are cost-effective, efficient, and fair improving engagement, retention, and creativity.     I've facilitated 500+ workshops. These 5 closing techniques are the only ones that stick. Most facilitators spend hours designing the opening and the activities. Then the last 10 minutes arrive and they panic. → "Let's share a final thought." → "Any last reflections?" → "Thanks everyone, great session!" The closing is where behaviour change gets locked in or evaporates. Most facilitators treat it like an afterthought. Here are the 5 that actually work: 1. The One Commitment Round Every participant states one specific thing they'll do differently this week. Out loud. To the room. → Not: "I'll communicate better." → Instead: "I'll start every Monday standup asking my team what's blocking them before giving updates." Vague commitments die on the drive home. Specific ones survive. Public commitment creates social accountability. Say it out loud and it costs something to not follow through. 2. The Accountability Partner Every participant pairs up. They exchange commitments. They set a check-in within 14 days. Calendar invite sent before they leave. → Not: "Let's all keep each other accountable." → Instead: "You and your partner have a 15-minute call on March 31st. One question: did you do it?" Accountability without a name and a date is just a wish. 3. The Letter to Yourself Each participant writes a short message to their future self. What they committed to. Why it matters. The facilitator collects them and emails them back in 2 weeks. A delayed mirror. When the workshop energy has faded, you get a message from yourself reminding you what you promised when you were most motivated. 4. The Team Contract The group co-creates 3-5 agreements about how they'll work together. One page. Everyone signs. Photographed and shared in the team channel before they leave. → Not: "Let's agree to be more open." → Instead: "If you disagree with a decision, raise it in the meeting, not after. If you don't speak up, you've agreed." Invisible norms become a visible artefact. When someone breaks the agreement, anyone can point to it. The contract does the confrontation so individuals don't have to. 5. The Pre-Mortem Close Instead of "how was the session?" ask: "It's 30 days from now and nothing has changed. Why?" Participants write down every reason the commitments might fail. Then for each, one thing that would prevent it. → "It'll fail because I'll get pulled into daily fires." → Prevention: "I'll block 30 minutes every Friday to review my commitment." Instead of hoping for the best, you design against failure before it happens. The pattern across all 5? Every closing that sticks has three things: → A specific commitment, not a feeling → A named person responsible for follow-up → A date on the calendar Without all three, it was a nice ending to a nice day. One “expert.” One “owner.” One “hero.” But here’s the problem with that approach… One study of 222 project teams found something remarkable: Groups outperformed their most proficient member 97% of the time. 97%. Let that sink in. So if your team is stuck, stop asking: “Who’s the expert?” Start asking: “How do we solve this together?” That shift changes everything. Here’s the simplest question I use with leadership teams: “What do you see that I don’t?” Then I do one thing most teams skip… I make it safe for the quiet people to speak first. Why? Because the first voices shape the whole room. If the loudest person goes first, everyone else just agrees or stays silent. Equal voice isn’t a “nice-to-have.” It’s how you get: • Better decisions • Faster alignment • Fewer blind spots And you have to measure it—not just outcomes, but collaboration behaviors. Try this for 30 days: Every meeting ends with: “What’s one risk we’re not naming?” “What’s one idea we didn’t hear yet?” Then assign the next step as a team— not a hero. Here’s the truth: If you fix collaboration, results follow. If you don’t, even great strategy collapses under friction. Stop building teams that depend on one genius. Build teams that compound intelligence. That’s how you turn good teams into unstoppable ones.

    Before I codified this, one loud voice could hijack my whole session. Now? I handle resistance without losing the room (or my authority) I used to let “just one comment” slide. Until it derailed the agenda. What started as a “quick comment” turned into a 40-minute detour. I watched the energy drain from the group. And from the client’s face. I was bringing my personal baggage Back then, I believed being “tough” made you less likeable as a facilitator. But I wasn’t being kind, I was avoiding discomfort. And that made me unclear. And unclear loses the room. Here’s my 2M framework, I wish I had years ago to protect focus and relationships. 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 (set yourself up for success): • Pre-session comms to set expectations • Co-create working agreements at the start • Introduce a ‘Parking lot’ early • Ask for permission to re-direct when needed 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 (when things go off-track): • Notice and name the disruption, neutrally • Refer back to the group’s agreements • Add off-topic ideas to the Parking lot • Check: “Is this moving us closer to our outcome?” This approach earned me a long-term client who brings me back to facilitate strategy days with their global brand leaders. Why? Because I kept big personalities on track without making anyone wrong. And even had execs thank me for shutting them down. Turns out, clarity earns trust. Fast.     We’ve been running a small experiment in our remote team lately: Can we make collaboration a bit more synchronous again, without adding more meetings? We started using a virtual office tool internally to make presence more visible. Not to be “always on”, but to make it easier to see: - who’s around - who’s in focus mode - who can quickly help unblock something My main learning so far: A surprising number of decisions don’t need a 30-minute call or another async thread. They just need a 3-minute clarification while the context is still fresh. That has improved two things for us: faster decisions and better inclusion. It’s simply easier for remote colleagues to jump into a question at the right moment, instead of needing the perfect calendar slot or being added to the right meeting. For me, that’s been a useful reminder: good async collaboration is essential, but a bit more intentional real-time presence can remove a lot of friction.     I’ve been thinking a lot about the 90 minute virtual meeting paradox. We spend the first 30 minutes on welcoming everyone and introductions, the next 15 on framing, and then a few people share thoughts. Then, just when the conversation gets meaningful, the host abruptly announces "We're out of time!” and throws a few rushed closing thoughts and announcements together. Sound familiar? We crave deep, meaningful, trust-based exchanges in virtual meeting environments that feel both tiring and rushed. It seems like as soon as momentum builds and insights emerge, it’s time to wrap up. Share-outs become a regurgitation of top-level ideas—usually focused on the most soundbite-ready insights and omitting those seeds of ideas that didn’t have time to be explored further. And sometimes, we even cite these meetings as examples of participation in a process, even when that participation is only surface level to check the participation box.  After facilitating and attending hundreds (thousands?) of virtual meetings, I've found four practices that create space for more engagement and depth: 1. Send a thoughtful and focused pre-work prompt at least a few days ahead of time that invites reflection before gathering. When participants arrive having already engaged with the core question(s), it’s much easier to jump right into conversation. Consider who designs these prompts and whose perspectives they center. 2. Replace round-robin introductions with a focused check-in question that directly connects to the meeting's purpose. "What's one tension you're navigating in this work?" for example yields more insight than sharing organizational affiliations. Be mindful of who speaks first and how difference cultural communication styles may influence participation.  3. Structure the agenda with intentionally expanding time blocks—start tight (and facilitate accordingly), and then create more spaciousness as the meeting progresses. This honors the natural rhythm of how trust and dialogue develop, and allows for varying approaches to processing and sharing.  4. Prioritize accessibility and inclusion in every aspect of the meeting. Anticipating and designing for participants needs means you’re thinking about language justice, technology and materials accessibility, neurodivergence, power dynamics, and content framing. Asking “What do you need to fully participate in this meeting?” ahead of time invites participants to share their needs. These meeting suggestions aren’t just about efficiency—they’re about creating spaces where authentic relationships and useful conversations can actually develop. Especially at times when people are exhausted and working hard to manage their own energy, a well-designed meeting can be a welcome space to engage.     Most failed projects never lacked a plan — they lacked agreement. A project charter isn’t paperwork. It’s the invisible contract that aligns every stakeholder before chaos starts. It defines: - Why this project exists (purpose) - Who owns what (accountability) - How success will be measured (outcomes) I’ve seen teams skip this step because “we need to start fast. ” They end up starting twice — once to build, once to fix. But too often, teams skip this step because “ we need to start fast. ” The truth? They end up starting twice — once to build, once to fix. If you want to lead with clarity, start with alignment. Your first deliverable isn’t the Gantt chart — it’s shared understanding. Here are 3 ways to make your project charter actually work: ✅ 1. Make it outcome-driven, not output-driven. Most charters focus on what will be delivered — timelines, budgets, tasks. Shift to why it matters. Define the problem it solves and what success looks like in behavior or adoption. - Instead of “Deliver new CRM,” say “Increase user adoption by 25% within 3 months.” ✅ 2. Co-create, don’t delegate. A charter written for stakeholders dies fast. A charter written with stakeholders lives. Run a short alignment session before writing — get your sponsor, users, and leads to co-own the “why” and the “how.” - The goal: fewer sign-offs, more buy-in. ✅ 3. Keep it human-readable. If people can’t skim it, they won’t follow it. Use one page, plain language, and visuals (timeline, ownership chart, success metrics). A charter is not a report — it’s a roadmap for humans. - Ask yourself: “Could my team summarize this in 30 seconds?” If not, simplify. Because in the end — a good charter isn’t about process.     Over the past year, The Lyndon Consulting Company had the privilege of partnering with several Fortune 500 companies, working on contracts and programs worth north of $12 million. These collaborations taught us valuable lessons on what drives success—and what doesn’t—when navigating high-value partnerships. Here are the core principles that guided us that we wanted to share going into 2025. 1. Be Human—Conversations Matter More Than You Think In an age dominated by automation and artificial intelligence, it’s easy to overlook the importance of human connection. While AI can certainly streamline processes, we’ve learned that genuine conversations are irreplaceable. We made it a priority to build relationships, ask questions, and engage deeply during the discovery phase of every deal. This wasn’t just about gathering information for a proposal—it was about understanding the nuances of our clients’ needs and creating a space for open, honest dialogue. Our approach focused on active listening and a commitment to understanding the human side of business—what keeps our clients up at night, what excites them, and what their ultimate goals are. Yes, technology can accelerate many things, but at the heart of every deal, there must be a real conversation. It’s the foundation of trust, collaboration, and long-term success. 2. Give Value Before Asking for the Deal One common mistake we’ve seen in business is the rush to “close the deal” before establishing a genuine connection. Too many companies focus on selling first, forgetting the essential principle of giving before asking. At Lyndon Consulting, we’ve always sought to provide value before asking for anything in return. Whether through guidance, insights, or simply offering advice, we believe that the act of sharing knowledge builds goodwill. While we don’t always win the business on the first go—sometimes the timing just isn’t right—we’ve seen the long-term benefits of this approach. By giving first, we create a foundation of trust. We’ve had clients who didn't choose us immediately, but when the time came, they came back. Others referred us to their peers or found new opportunities to collaborate with us. That’s the power of providing value upfront. It fosters relationships that last far longer than a single transaction. 3. Provide Clarity and Intentional Communication Miscommunication or lack of clarity can quickly derail any deal. We’ve learned that being clear and intentional in every interaction is key to success. Whether setting expectations or providing regular updates, transparency ensures all parties understand where things stand and what’s coming next.
