    “We used to in every class have a Discord. It used to be like a lot of people just asking questions about maybe like, a lab or a homework... I guess everyone’s just Chat-GPT now. Like the new classes that I have now, we still have the Discord, but nobody really talks because most or all the questions are answered by ChatGPT.” —P16, undergraduate computing student If you’ve moderated a class Discord, you’ve probably felt this shift: a once-busy channel that used to hum with “anyone stuck on Q3?” goes quiet. Not because students stopped needing help, but because they started getting it elsewhere. A new study by Hou et al puts language to what many of us have sensed. Based on 17 interviews across seven R1 universities, students described a social rerouting of help-seeking: 13 of 17 said peer requests are now mediated by GenAI (often “ask GPT”), and students noticed community spaces like Discord slowing down. However, when AI becomes the first responder, the “hidden curriculum” stops circulating. Fewer quick questions means fewer micro-mentorships, fewer perspective-shifts, less socially shared regulation — all the good stuff that builds belonging and lifts performance over time. Students save minutes, but communities lose momentum. So what can educators do about this? - Design “peer-first, AI-fast” protocols. Peer interactions build camaraderie and a sense of belonging. Educators need to design experiences that build more peer interactions and support inside classrooms, to compensate for GenAI caused declines.   - Protect mentorship routes. Research also showed that younger students are reaching out less often to senior mentors, missing out on invisible learning that comes from understanding unwritten rules and cultural norms. Educators might need to formalize “office-hours relays” (senior → junior → cohort) so guidance doesn’t vanish.  - Create informal interaction opportunities. Informal opportunities help students build relationships beyond their immediate circle, and provide entry points into additional learning communities.     When we hear “play” at work, we think of Fun Fridays, team lunches, or a table tennis table, and those moments matter. But there’s another kind of play we talk about far less. It’s what happens when teams are free to experiment, think beyond the obvious, and adapt on the fly. That kind of play matters most when roadmaps shift, priorities change, and ambiguity is part of the job. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.     Misunderstanding of hands-on experiential learning happens to me all the time. "It just looks like you're playing". From the outside looking in, my workshops can appear on the surface to be adults "playing" with anything from Kinects while building a Mars Rover Prototype to bricks and figures during a LEGO® Serious Play® workshop. What is really happening is much deeper and resonates long after the workshop ends: - Self-reflection = increased self-awareness - Creative thinking = improved problem-solving - Speaking in metaphor and story-telling = stronger connection to each other Covering topics like increasing collaboration, navigating team conflict, strengthening trust, and embracing shared leadership will make a difference in how your team shows up day in and day out. Bringing these topics to life in a way that is memorable, forges cohesion, and encourages people to dig a little deeper... that is what these purposeful methods bring out.     Adults don’t resist learning. They resist irrelevance. Start every session by answering one question: “Why does this matter to me?” Because if you don’t, they’ll spend the rest of the session figuring it out for themselves, or tuning out. The truth is, adult learners don’t come to your session empty. They come with experiences, opinions, and hard-earned lessons... A lifetime of trial and error. If your training ignores that, it’s not education. It’s interruption. The Adult Learning guide reminds us that: ➡️ Adults learn best when they can connect new ideas to what they already know. Don’t start with theory. Start with what’s familiar. A story, a shared challenge, a real-life scenario, then build outward. ➡️ Relevance is the strongest motivator. Adults don’t engage because you’re energetic; they engage because the content helps them solve a problem they care about now. ➡️ Respect drives participation. Treat participants as peers, not pupils. Invite them to challenge ideas, share experiences, and shape the discussion. Learning is a two-way street. ➡️ Application is the real test of learning. Adults don’t want to “know”, they want to do. Every session should answer: “How can I use this tomorrow?” When training treats adults like children, they disengage. When it treats them like experts in progress, they lean in.     “Train-the-trainers” (TTT) is one of the most common methods used to scale up improvement & change capability across organisations, yet we often fail to set it up for success. A recent article, drawing on teacher professional development & transfer-of-training research, argues TTT should always be based on an “offer-and-use” model: OFFER: what the programme provides—facilitator expertise, session design, practice opportunities, feedback, follow-up support & evaluation. USE: what participants do with those opportunities—what they notice, how they make sense of it, how much they engage, what they learn, & whether they apply it in real work. How to design TTT that works & sticks: 1. Design for real-world use: Clarify the practical outcome - what trainers should do differently in their next sessions & what that should improve for the organisation. Plan beyond the classroom with post-course support so people can apply learning. Space learning over time rather than delivering it in one intensive block, because spacing & follow-ups support sustained use. 2. Use strong facilitators: Select facilitators who know the topic & how adults learn, how groups work & how to give useful feedback. Ensure they teach “how to make this stick at work” (apply & sustain practices), not only “how to deliver a session.” 3. Make practice central: Build the programme around realistic rehearsal: deliver, get feedback, & practise again until skills become automatic. Use participants’ real scenarios (especially change situations) to strengthen transfer. Include safe practice for difficult moments (challenge, unexpected questions) & treat mistakes as learning. Build peer learning so participants learn with & from each other, not just the facilitator. 4. Prepare participants to succeed: Assess what participants already know & can do, then tailor the learning. Build confidence to use skills at work (confidence predicts application). Help each person create a simple, specific plan for when & how they will use the approaches in their next training sessions. 5. Ensure workplace transfer support: Enable quick application (opportunities to deliver training soon after the course), plus time & resources to do it well. Provide ongoing support (feedback, coaching, & encouragement) from leaders, peers &/or the wider organisation. 6. Evaluate what matters: Go beyond satisfaction scores - assess whether trainers changed their practice & whether this improved outcomes for learners & the organisation.     Differentiation: Teaching One Lesson in 37 Ways? Let’s Rethink That! We’ve all heard the joke (or maybe lived it): "Differentiation: teaching one lesson in 37 different ways every day." It’s funny because it feels true—but here’s the twist: that’s NOT what differentiation is supposed to be! What Differentiation Is NOT: ❌ A marathon of worksheets tailored for each student. ❌ Turning your classroom into a chaotic buffet of 37 mini-lessons. ❌ Sacrificing your sanity for the illusion of personalized learning. Let’s face it—this approach is overwhelming, ineffective, and not sustainable. Differentiation isn’t about doing more; it’s about working smarter. What Differentiation IS: ✔️ Adjusting the HOW, not the WHOLE: Differentiation means tweaking the content, process, or product—not reinventing the wheel every time. ✔️ Grouping with Purpose: Flexible grouping helps meet diverse needs without teaching a separate lesson for every student. ✔️ Using Scaffolds: Provide supports (like sentence starters or graphic organizers) that help all students succeed without diluting expectations. ✔️ Offering Choice: Let students choose how they demonstrate understanding—projects, presentations, essays, or creative solutions. What’s the Right Balance? Think of differentiation as a toolbox: 🛠️ Use pre-assessments to understand where students are. 🛠️ Integrate tiered tasks that challenge advanced learners while supporting those who need more guidance. 🛠️ Provide universal supports that benefit everyone (e.g., visual aids, peer discussions). The Golden Rule: Differentiation isn’t about overworking yourself; it’s about creating opportunities for all students to engage and succeed—without losing your mind in the process. One year, I tasked students with planning a balanced meal for a mock school cafeteria menu. While some created colorful posters (visual), others explained their reasoning in group discussions (auditory), and a few even calculated calorie and nutrient percentages for the meal (logical/mathematical). 💡 Teacher Pro Tip: Start small! Differentiate ONE aspect of your lesson—content, process, or product—and build from there. The real magic of teaching lies in recognizing these differences and responding intentionally. ✨ Differentiation isn’t just a strategy—it’s a mindset.
