    ❌ Using Instagram Threads for communication? You might want to pause and understand these concerning #privacy issues. Let’s dive deeper on some red flags: 🚩 A Data Sinkhole: Renowned privacy advocates have been sounding alarms on how Threads ingests data. It's been noted to harvest more personal info than many of its counterparts, earning it the label - a "privacy nightmare" by experts. 🚩 Forced Linking: At Cloaked, we believe in using different identifiers for each service, so you aren’t easily “surveilled” across platforms. This allows you to have more control over your data. But, Instagram and Threads are mandatorily connected. Your identity is the same across both platforms, which means that Meta gets more connected data on you. 🚩 Compliance Roadblocks: Companies that are mandated to uphold specific compliance standards might find themselves in tricky waters when navigating Threads’ #data landscape, especially if employees use personal apps like Threads for work in any regard, and we’re just hitting on the privacy #compliance guardrails. For now, the app is not usable in places with strict(er) #privacylaws, like the European Union (EU). 🚩 No E2E Encryption: Unlike Signal Messenger or WhatsApp, Instagram Direct (and by extension, Threads) doesn't use end-to-end #encryption for messages by default. The content of your messages is potentially accessible by Instagram, as well as anyone who can compromise Instagram's systems.  🚩 The Impersonation Threat: Threads is a new platform, so it’s a hotbed of impersonators. Consider the ramifications if an employee's Threads account falls into the wrong hands - a genuine threat to organizational integrity. Many new platforms carry this risk and Threads is no exception, even if accounts are forcibly linked. If you're using Threads as a communication tool, just be informed. It's not just about embracing new tools but understanding their intricacies, potentials, and pitfalls.     Retailer's Meta Pixel Lawsuit: A Tech Breakdown... A leading retailer is facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly sharing sensitive customer health data with Meta (Facebook) through the Meta Pixel embedded on its pharmacy website. This includes data like prescription searches and immunization inquiries, which were shared without user consent. The collected data was allegedly used for targeted advertising, potentially violating laws like #HIPAA and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. How did this happen? The technical breakdown: Step 1: User Interaction A customer visits the retailer’s pharmacy website, interacting with features like prescription refills, drug pricing searches, or immunization scheduling. Step 2: Meta Pixel Activation Meta Pixel silently activates, tracking user actions, including web pages visited, search terms entered (e.g., "Prozac pricing"), and button clicks. Sensitive information is recorded and prepared for transmission. Step 3: Cookies in Action The Pixel utilizes cookies such as: a) "c_user": Links browsing data to logged-in Facebook users, identifying them by their Facebook ID. b) "fbp": Tracks users who are not logged in, creating unique device-based identifiers. Step 4: Associating Data with Facebook Profiles For logged-in users, the Pixel data is matched with their Facebook profiles, tying browsing behavior to personal information like name, demographics, and interests. Step 5: Targeted #Advertising Meta uses this data to create Custom Audiences and Lookalike Audiences, enabling precise ad targeting on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. What went wrong? 1. Unauthorized Sharing of Sensitive Data: User interactions, including protected health information (PHI), were shared with Meta without user consent. 2. Legal Violations: Sharing #PHI for #marketing purposes likely breaches HIPAA and other privacy laws. 3. Transparency Issues: Users had no clear notification or opt-out mechanism for this tracking and data sharing. Why are the trackers challenging? 1. Invisible Tracking: Tools like #Meta #Pixel operate in the background, making it challenging for businesses and users to identify their activity. 2. Real-Time Data Sharing: The Pixel sends data instantaneously, leaving no audit trail for manual review. 3.     "Collecting, storing, using, and sharing people’s sensitive information without their informed consent violates their privacy, and exposes them to substantial secondary harms like stigma, discrimination, physical violence, and emotional distress. The Federal Trade Commission will not stand for it" - says FTC in new blog post recapping its actions in Avast, X-Mode and InMarket. Key points re some common themes: 🔹 Browsing and location data are sensitive. Full stop. 🔹 Browsing and location data paint an intimate picture of a person’s life, including their religious affiliations, health and medical conditions, financial status, and sexual orientation. 🔹 What makes the underlying data sensitive springs from the insights they reveal and the ease with which those insights can be attributed to particular people. 🔹 Years of research shows that datasets often contain sensitive and personally identifiable information even when they do not contain any traditional standalone elements of PII, and re-identification gets easier every day—especially for datasets with the precision of those at issue 🔹 People have no way to object to—let alone control—how their data is collected, retained, used, and disclosed when these practices are hidden from them. 🔹 When a developer incorporates a company’s code into their app through an SDK, that developer amplifies any privacy risks inherent in the SDK by exposing their app’s users to it. 🔹 Data handling must align with the purposes for which it was collected. 🔹 Purpose matters: Firms do not have free license to market, sell, and monetize people’s information beyond purposes to provide their requested product or service. 🔹 Any safeguards used to maintain people’s privacy are often outstripped by companies’ incentives and abilities to match data to particular people - make sure that you control the sharing and use of data by your downstream. 🔹 Promises and contract clauses are important, but they must be backed up by action. 🔹 Firms should not let business model incentives that focus on the bottom line outweigh the need for meaningful privacy safeguards. #dataprivacy #dataprotection #privacyFOMO https://lnkd.in/eAuTmutG

    🚨 If you are a parent, or work in education, healthcare or anywhere that handles sensitive information, you need to know what’s happening at Meta. Over the past few months, Facebook has been quietly testing a “cloud processing” feature that lets its AI analyse photos and videos from your camera roll. The feature is suggested to Facebook users when creating a new Story. The idea, according to Meta, is to help you “get creative ideas” by automatically suggesting photos and videos to post. They say this is an opt-in feature and that images aren’t used to train AI models (for now). But the fact that a social media company can have ongoing access to your private library of images should raise alarms. Some users say the setting has appeared for them without notice. Others have accepted terms without realising what they meant. None of this necessarily implies wrongdoing, but it exposes how fragile our sense of control has become in the age of AI-powered convenience. For schools and healthcare organisations, this isn’t an abstract privacy debate. One phone can hold hundreds of legally protected or deeply personal images of children, patients, or colleagues, all potentially visible to algorithms you didn’t design and can’t audit. So before you open another app update, take a step back. •⁠ ⁠Review device policies. •⁠ ⁠Limit Meta app access on work devices. •⁠ ⁠Separate social media from sensitive data. •⁠ ⁠Talk to your teams about where privacy consent ends and risk begins. The line between personal and professional privacy has never been so easy to cross or so hard to undo. And as technology moves faster than governance, the responsibility to protect people still sits with us.

    “If the product is free, you are the product.” A mentor told me this years ago when I was still trying to make sense of Facebook’s sudden rise and the “too-good-to-be-true” promise of *free* connectivity. Yesterday, it was confirmed: Meta will begin using your posts across Facebook and Instagram to train its #AI models—starting now. This hits close to home. Data is the new battlefield—and most people don’t even know they’re on it. To my fellow Naval JOs who dream of command, and to every brilliant Silicon Valley security engineer or analyst eyeing your next leadership leap: This is your moment to think like a strategist, not just a technologist. Ask yourself: ✨Do I fully understand where my data goes once I post it online? ->Read the fine prints. ✨Am I educating my team and community about digital consent, privacy settings, and AI data harvesting? ✨Would my future self—or my board—approve of how I’m protecting user trust today? Here’s what I’ve learned leading on the deckplate and in Silicon Valley: 1. #Privacy is a #Leadership Issue It’s not just a #technical challenge or #legal checkbox—it’s a matter of stewardship. Leaders must be the guardians of digital #ethics, not just system administrators. 2. Guardrails Are Non-Negotiable Consent must be explicit, not buried in Terms of Service. AI must be trained on data obtained ethically, with transparency and accountability baked in. 3. Use Tech—Don’t Let It Use You Enjoy the tools. Post with purpose. But educate yourself on your rights, opt-out settings, and alternatives. Control your feed before it controls your future. 4. Model the Behavior You Want Others to Follow Every time you speak up about privacy, choose platforms wisely, or limit oversharing, you’re influencing a culture of trust and protection—on and offline. The AI revolution demands more than innovation. It requires #integrity. So, aspiring leaders—how will you respond? Will you educate your peers? Speak up when policies violate trust? Help your company, unit, or family navigate the thin line between #engagement and #exploitation? Action Step: Today, check your Meta settings. Opt out if you choose. "The Federal Trade Commission said it found that several social media and streaming services —including #Meta, #YouTube and #TikTok— engaged in a “vast surveillance” of consumers, including minors, collecting and sharing more personal information than most users realized." "The agency said the report showed the need for federal privacy legislation and restrictions on how companies collect and use data." “Surveillance practices can endanger people’s privacy, threaten their freedoms, and expose them to a host of harms, from identify theft to stalking,” said Lina Kahn, the F.T.C.’s chair, in a statement. "The F.T.C. found that the companies voraciously consumed data about users, and often bought information about people who weren’t users through data brokers. They also gathered information from accounts linked to other services. Most of the companies collected the age, gender and the language spoken by users. Many platforms also obtained information on education, income and marital status. The companies didn’t give users easy ways to opt-out of data collection and often retained sensitive information much longer than consumers would expect, the agency said." https://lnkd.in/ey598yDh

    This week in hard social media app security fails, the Tea app hit headlines by it's gross underprotection of the data subjects it served. It goes down in history as one of the bigger fails with the following being some of the lower notes on the breach notes thus far. - Revealed more than 72,000 selfies coupled with geolocation metadata. - Allowed ID and face verification photos without censorship - PII sent to a public server bucket - Even disclosed coordinates of a classified US base (as confirmed by satellite images displaying an F-35 aircraft and an individual) - Other PII found include passports, concealed carry permits, registered nurse IDs, and literally countless uncensored drivers' licenses - map of exposed APIs was circulating where those API endpoints were public and unsecured. The serious takeaway is that, at the consumer level, you have very little protections. You don't have a TPRM group validating the security of the services you use from a data processor/ vendor/ tech company. You don't even know the geopolitical associations of the app development teams bringing to you the functionality that is receiving, processing and storing your data. It may be more of a chore but much less than the chore of being exposed on a social media app with all your bits. Do some validation of the company, examine the use cases of the app, see if their security statements online and customer service speak definitively on how your data is to be stored, protected, and used before giving up your image and likeness and personal details.     Recently, many LinkedIn users outside the European Union were surprised to discover that they had been automatically opted in to allow their content to be used for training generative AI (GenAI) models. This means that the articles, posts, and comments you've shared on the platform could now help teach AI systems to generate new content. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 This situation highlights the use of dark patterns - design techniques used to manipulate or heavily influence user behavior without their explicit consent. For those unfamiliar, dark patterns are subtle ways websites or apps nudge you into doing things you might not do voluntarily, like sharing more data or signing up for services unintentionally. Being opted in by default, without a transparent and straightforward explanation, undermines user autonomy and trust. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 Generative 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 User 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 are 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 You might ask, "Companies use our data all the time for AI - why is this different?" Here's why: - Generative AI Works Differently: Generative AI models don't just analyze data; they learn patterns from it to create new content that can closely resemble the original data. This raises the risk of your unique content being replicated or mimicked without your knowledge. - Legal Agreements and Expectations: Platforms like LinkedIn have user agreements that state you own your content and can delete it at any time. This sets an expectation that you have control over your data. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 Laws like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA) grant you the right to have your personal data deleted upon request. However, once your content has been used to train a GenAI model, removing it isn't straightforward. Imagine trying to remove sugar from a cake after it's been baked - you'd need to discard the entire cake and start over. Similarly, to completely eliminate your data from an AI model, the company would need to retrain the model from scratch, which is often impractical due to the high costs involved. The challenge of 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 You might wonder if there's a way for AI models to "unlearn" specific data. Enter the emerging field of machine unlearning, which aims to remove the influence of certain data points from trained models without retraining them entirely. However, this field is still in its infancy and faces significant challenges: - Performance Issues: Removing data can degrade the model's performance, a problem known as catastrophic unlearning. - Security Risks: Attempts to unlearn data might inadvertently expose information about the removed data, posing new privacy threats. - Technical Limitations: Current techniques aren't yet effective for large-scale models like those used in GenAI.
