Their AI-powered analytics initiative was scheduled to launch in three weeks. "We have a choice to make," said the CHRO, breaking the silence. "We can either build this on a foundation of trust, or we can become another cautionary tale." This moment of reckoning is playing out in boardrooms worldwide as organizations navigate the delicate balance between data-driven insights and employee privacy. The promise of AI in the workplace is compelling: deeper understanding of engagement patterns, early detection of burnout, more responsive leadership. But these benefits evaporate when employees feel watched rather than supported. The most successful organizations are discovering that transparency isn't just an ethical choice; it's a strategic advantage. New Handbook from the Steering committee on Human rights of the Conseil de l'Europe on the protection of human rights and AI ! ➡️ Arificial intelligence is rapidly transforming public and private sectors, offering significant opportunities to enhance human rights, from improving access to justice and healthcare to enabling more personalised education. However, these benefits are accompanied by substantial risks, prompting international efforts to ensure that AI systems remain aligned with human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. 🔔This Handbook highlights that existing human rights frameworks, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter, remain fully applicable in the context of AI. Rather than creating entirely new rights, the challenge lies in interpreting and applying established principles such as human dignity, autonomy, proportionality, and effective remedies to increasingly complex and opaque technological systems. ➡️A key contribution of the document is its structured approach to understanding AI, from technical concepts like autonomy, adaptiveness, and inference, to governance principles such as transparency, explainability, and accountability. These elements are essential to ensuring that AI systems can be scrutinised, understood, and challenged, especially when they influence decisions affecting individuals’ rights. ➡️Across sectors such as law enforcement, healthcare, education, and employment, the same core human rights risks consistently emerge. These include discrimination driven by biased data or proxy variables, threats to privacy due to large-scale data processing and surveillance capabilities, and the difficulty for individuals to obtain effective remedies when decisions are made or supported by opaque AI systems. ➡️The Handbook also highlights the growing importance of state obligations, not only to refrain from interfering with rights, but to actively protect individuals from harms caused by AI, including those arising from private actors. This implies stronger regulatory frameworks, risk and impact assessments throughout the AI lifecycle, and mechanisms ensuring accountability and redress. ➡️ AI is framed as a balancing exercise between innovation and fundamental rights. Ensuring this balance requires embedding human rights considerations at every stage of AI development and deployment, reinforcing the idea that technological progress must remain firmly anchored in democratic values and the protection of individuals.

  • Most discussions about privacy in blockchain miss the institutional reality. Institutions are not reluctant to adopt public blockchains because they dislike transparency. They are reluctant because uncontrolled transparency is operationally and strategically dangerous. In institutional systems, privacy is not about hiding misconduct. It is about preserving functionality. Every enterprise operates on asymmetric information: pricing strategies, treasury movements, counterparty relationships, supply constraints, and timing decisions. When these are exposed in real time, they become attack surfaces. Front-running, inference attacks, competitive signaling, and regulatory misinterpretation are not edge cases; they are predictable outcomes of radical transparency. Public blockchains, by default, expose execution, state, and relationships at the protocol layer.  This works for retail experimentation, but it fails institutional tests. Institutions cannot operate on infrastructure where counterparties, competitors, or adversaries can reconstruct behavior simply by observing the ledger. This is why privacy must be native, not optional. Retrofitted privacy layers create fragmented trust assumptions and operational complexity. True institutional adoption requires privacy that is enforced at the same layer as execution and settlement, with cryptographic guarantees rather than policy promises. Techniques such as zero-knowledge proofs, selective disclosure, and confidential state allow systems to remain verifiable without being fully observable. The distinction is critical: institutions need verifiability without voyeurism. Regulated entities must be able to prove compliance, solvency, and correctness without revealing strategies, customer relationships, or internal operations. Auditors, regulators, and counterparties need controlled access, not public omniscience. This is how every mature financial system already operates. Settlement is final and auditable, but not broadcast in real time to the world. Blockchains that ignore this reality are not “more decentralized”; they are simply misaligned with how institutions function. The future of blockchain adoption will not be driven by chains that maximize visibility. It will be driven by systems that balance cryptographic transparency with structural privacy. Privacy is not a user preference. It is an architectural requirement for institutional systems to exist at all.
