He tailored his message, used relatable metaphors, and taught with empathy. “𝐼𝑓 𝑎 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑐𝑎𝑛’𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ, 𝑚𝑎𝑦𝑏𝑒 𝑤𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛.” — 𝐼𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑜 𝐸𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑎 Krishna embodied this quote long before it was said. He adjusted his delivery, tone, and examples — not to show knowledge, but to spark realization. Teachers today face diverse classrooms — some students are fast, some need nurturing, some respond to visuals, while others to emotions. A great teacher observes the emotional, intellectual, and psychological readiness of the learner and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Each student has a different pace, background, and way of understanding. Teaching becomes meaningful only when delivered at the student’s level of comprehension. Krishna teaches us that real education begins with understanding the learner first. That’s the essence of contextual teaching — adapting your lesson to the learner's mental state, emotional need, and capacity. Example: For visual learners: use charts, diagrams, mind maps. For emotional learners: connect lessons to real-life stories or feelings. For struggling learners: break down content into bite-sized, relatable parts. For advanced learners: give higher-order thinking challenges or open-ended questions. Practical Tips for Teachers: Do a quick readiness check before starting a topic: Ask 2-3 open-ended questions. Use multiple modes of teaching: audio, visual, kinesthetic, storytelling. Pair students for peer learning, where strong learners help weaker ones. Celebrate small successes to boost confidence in underperformers. Inclusion isn’t optional when it comes to strategy work - it’s actually how you get to better strategy. One of the most effective ways I’ve seen teams unlock inclusive strategy development is through LEGO Serious Play. This is what we’re currently having a lot of fun with at UNICEF UK to develop our next three year strategy. It works because: - Everyone contributes by design. It’s not a workshop where the loudest voice wins. Everyone builds, everyone shares, and everyone gets heard. - It supports different thinking styles. You don’t have to be the fastest talker in the room to shape the outcome - people can communicate through models, metaphor and story. - It makes the invisible visible. Assumptions, risks, tensions and dependencies show up in the builds so the group can work with what’s really going on, not just what’s easiest to say. - It reduces jargon and increases clarity. When you have to “show it”, strategy becomes concrete, shared and easier to act on. - It creates a story people can retell. The models become anchors for a narrative: who we are, what we’re up against, what we’re choosing, and what we’ll do next. For me, the biggest shift is that strategy stops being something that gets presented to people and becomes something that gets built with them. Inclusive leadership: are your managers falling behind? Imagine this: A manager in your organization organizes a team meeting. Around the table (a virtual one too) are team members with different perspectives, experiences and needs. Does the manager: ✅ Create space for every voice? ✅ Catch their own biases before they influence decisions? ✅ Show genuine curiosity about ideas they don’t yet understand? … Or does the pressure of their workload or uncertainty about how to lead inclusive meetings keep them stuck in "business as usual"? Juggling tight deadlines, team dynamics and strategic goals—all while navigating the emphasis on DEI - it’s no wonder many managers sometimes feel overwhelmed, even as they genuinely want to do better. Inclusivity doesn’t happen by chance—it happens by choice. And your managers need the right tools, support and mindset to make that choice. So, how can you support them? Here are some strategies to help managers foster inclusivity: 1️⃣ Training and education: Provide DEI training for all managers, but not just those that "increase awareness and understanding". Choose ones that teach concrete tools, techniques and ways for behavioural change. 2️⃣ Tools: Equip managers in a couple of tools that will help them to create an environment where team members feel safe to speak up and share ideas. 3️⃣ Clear policies and procedures: Ensure that managers are trained in unbiased hiring, promotion and performance evaluation processes. 4️⃣ Inclusive team norms and open communication Encourage managers to establish inclusive team norms and regular one of ones to actively listen to their team members and consider diverse perspectives. 5️⃣ Regular check-ins: Schedule regular check-ins with managers to discuss their inclusion efforts, address concerns and provide ongoing support and resources. Hybrid Meetings ≠ Inclusive Meetings. I’ve lived it - and here’s 5 practical tips to ensure everyone has a voice, regardless of location. I spent more than 10,000 hours in hybrid meetings while as a remote leader for The Clorox Company. I was often the 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 remote attendee - while the rest of the group sat together in a conference room at HQ. Here’s what I learned the hard way: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲... ...by showing who gets heard, who feels seen, and who gets left out. If you're leading a distributed or hybrid team, how you structure your meetings sends a loud message about what (and who) matters. 𝟱 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 – who will actively combat distance bias and invite input from all meeting members 2️⃣ 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿 – to monitor the chat and the raised hands, to launch polls and to free up the facilitator to focus on the flow 3️⃣ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝗻 - so that there is equal access to the chat, polls, and reactions 4️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 – pair remote team members with in-room allies to help make space in the conversation and ensure they can see and hear everything 5️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘂𝗽 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 – be ready with a Plan B for audio, video, or connectivity issues in the room 𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳? 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. As a trainer, being prepared for instant changes in the delivery of any concept requires a flexible and adaptive mindset. Here are key strategies to help you stay prepared: 1. Thorough Subject knowledge - 📕 Master the content so well that you can break it down or present it in multiple ways, adapting to the audience’s needs. This will allow you to explain complex ideas in simpler terms or delve deeper if required. 2. Audience Analysis - 🧐 Before the session, understand your audience's knowledge level, learning preferences, and possible challenges. This will help you anticipate where you might need to adjust your delivery. 3. Create a Session Outline - 📝 Have a structured outline that allows for adjustments. Include different examples, analogies, and activities so that you can switch methods if needed. 4. Plan for Flexibility 🧘 - Build in buffer time to the session plan, allowing you to address questions or revisit concepts without rushing. Be prepared to cut less essential content if time constraints arise. 5. Use Interactive Methods 🗣️ - Include interactive methods such as Q&A, group discussions, or problem-solving activities. These allow you to gauge understanding and shift the delivery based on immediate feedback. 6. Technology Familiarity - 🧑💻 Know the tools and platforms you are using so you can quickly adapt, whether it’s changing slides, moving between resources, or using multimedia to reinforce concepts. 7. Stay Calm and Confident ☺️ - If a change in delivery is necessary, remain calm and composed. Confidence reassures the audience, and maintaining a positive attitude will help you navigate unexpected changes smoothly. 8. Prepare Backup Plans 🖋️ - Have alternative examples, exercises, or activities ready in case the original approach does not resonate with the group. 9. Stay Current 🏃 - Keep up with the latest trends, tools, and methods in training and your field of expertise. This allows you to bring fresh perspectives and solutions to any spontaneous situation. 10. Gather Feedback ✍️ - After a session, ask for feedback to understand where adjustments were successful or where improvements are needed. This helps in refining your ability to adapt in future sessions. 🌐 "How can we lead inclusive team meetings when our team is so widely distributed across timezones?" That's a question our #Inclusion Strategy team at Netflix has been reflecting on quite a bit lately – and that's surely not an issue we face alone. Here are some ideas that popped up as we put our geographically distance heads together to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in discussions that are relevant to all: 1️⃣ Establish a Meeting Time Rotation: to ensure fair participation, create a rotating schedule for your meetings. This means alternating meeting times to accommodate different time zones, so that each team member has an opportunity to attend during their regular working hours on a rotating basis. 2️⃣ Consider Core Overlapping Hours: identify the core overlapping hours when the majority of team members are available. Aim to schedule important meetings during these hours to maximize attendance. This may require some flexibility from all team members, but it fosters a sense of shared responsibility for ensuring everyone's voice can be heard. 3️⃣ Prioritise Meeting Relevance: ensure that meetings are called only when it's essential for all team members to be present. Avoid scheduling meetings for routine updates that can be shared asynchronously, giving team members more flexibility to manage their schedules. 4️⃣ Create Pre-Meeting Materials: provide agendas, and key discussion points well in advance, so team members who cannot attend live sessions can still contribute their input asynchronously. This way, everyone can stay informed and engaged in the decision-making process. 5️⃣ Encourage Rotating Facilitation: consider rotating meeting facilitators to accommodate different time zones. This not only distributes the responsibility but also allows team members from various geographies to lead discussions and bring diverse perspectives to the forefront. 6️⃣ Use Inclusive Meeting Technologies: leverage virtual meeting tools with features like real-time chat and polling to foster engagement from all participants, regardless of their location. Consider having all meetings recorded by default (unless there's a compelling reason not to), streamlining access to the team immediately after each recording is ready. 7️⃣ Promote Open Feedback Channels: establish channels for team members to asynchronously provide feedback on meeting times and themes, and communication methods. 8️⃣ Acknowledge and Respect Personal & Cultural Differences: be mindful of cultural practices and observances that may impact team members' availability or participation. Strive to do the same about individuals' needs, too (like dropping kids at school). These strategies can help create an inclusive and equitable approach to meetings, enhancing the chances of all team members feeling valued and empowered to contribute. How else can you foster that? 🤔

When we talk about inclusive cultures we often forget that the way we run meetings can make others feel excluded. Most of us have experienced this at some point. You walk into a meeting ready to contribute... and you’re asked to take the notes instead. You start to make a point... and you’re interrupted before you finish the sentence. No one means to upset you. But when taking up airtime becomes a power game, studies show certain voices are consistently sidelined. (Women are 33% more likely to be interrupted in a meeting according to McKinsey & Company) Research has shown that in group discussions, interruptions are overwhelmingly directed at women, not because of competence, but because of deeply ingrained norms around who is “meant” to speak, lead, and conclude conversations. Deborah Tannen, Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University, says: “Men tend to speak to determine status. Women tend to speak to build connection.” When meetings reward only one style, we quietly lose insight, creativity, and trust. Over time, some of us may disengage... not because we have nothing to say, but because the room hasn’t made space to hear us. So what can help? A few small design choices can change the entire dynamic of a meeting: 1 - Read the room before you speak. Pause and ask yourself: Am I interrupting for clarity, or just to get airtime? A thought that can wait often lands better when it’s invited. 2 - Remove unnecessary hierarchy. The person at the “head” of the table often sets who feels allowed to speak. Different seating, shared facilitation, or even a change of environment can flatten this without a single rule being announced. 3 - Offer more than one way to contribute. Not everyone processes out loud. Shared docs, chat threads, or follow‑up notes give people space to contribute on their own terms and often surface the most thoughtful ideas. 4 - Always have a host. A clear host is not about control, it’s about care for participants. They hold the agenda, protect the flow, and gently intervene when interruptions happen. This matters even more online. In virtual meetings, one simple tactic helps: wait three seconds after someone stops speaking before you jump in. It feels awkward at first, but that pause often invites in the person who was about to speak and decided not to. A slightly uncomfortable silence is far more productive than a room where only the fastest voices win. Inclusive meetings aren’t about being “nice”.
