    After noticing a similar habit among highly creative people (Einstein, Mozart, da Vinci, etc), the neuroscientist Dr. Nancy Andreasen designed a brain-imaging study to explore the neural basis of this habit. Essentially, these creative people all carved out time each day for... “Free-floating periods of thought,” Dr. Andreasen writes in her book, “The Creating Brain.” The specifics of the habit differ. Leonardo da Vinci, for example, would often sit in front of a painting “and simply think, sometimes for as long as a half day.” Whereas Einstein loved to aimlessly drift at sea on a little wooden boat he called the “Tinef” (Yiddish for “piece of junk”). He had to be rescued by the Coast Guard so frequently that a friend eventually bought him an outboard motor for emergency use, but Einstein refused it. “To the average person, being becalmed for hours might be a terrible trial,” the friend said. “To Einstein, this could simply provide more time to think.” So, Dr. Andreasen conducted the first study of brain activity during “free-floating periods of thought,” when the body is in a “resting state” and the mind is free to wander. “We found activations in multiple regions of the association cortex,” she writes. “We were not [seeing] a passive silent brain during the ‘resting state,’ but rather a brain that was actively connecting thoughts and experiences.” Essentially, Dr. Andreasen found that the brain defaults to creativity. When the body is still and the mind is allowed to float freely, the brain engages in what she termed REST (“random episodic silent thinking”). And during REST, the brain “uses its most human and complex parts...areas known to gather information and link it all together.” Separate from those that led to Dr. Andreasen's study, I’ve collected many examples of creative people describing their own REST-ful habits: The legendary designer Paula Scher: “I figured out every identity program I’ve ever done in a taxicab…you sit in the back...look out the window and you can sort of let your mind wander.” One of the great songwriters of all time, Paul Simon: “I used to go off in the bathroom...turn on the faucet so that water would run—I like that sound, it’s very soothing to me—and I’d play, in the dark, letting my imagination wander.” (During one of these sessions, these words came to him: “Hello darkness, my old friend / I’ve come to talk with you again”—which became the opening verse of “The Sound of Silence”). The filmmaker Quentin Tarantino: “I have a pool...And I hop in my pool and just kind of float around…and then a lot of shit will come to me. Literally, a lot of ideas will come to me. Then I get out and make little notes on that...That will be my work for tomorrow.” - - - So whether it’s sitting in front of painting, drifting in a boat, riding in a taxi, playing the guitar in a dark bathroom, or floating in a pool, if you want to be more creative, carve out time each day for “free-floating periods of thought.”

    I used to have a very different idea of what a "finished" product looked like. In my early days as a founder, I felt that if a feature didn’t have the smoothest animations or the most beautiful UI, it wasn't ready for our customers. I thought "quality" meant "polish." But after talking to our users, I realized something important. When someone has a problem, they don't need a beautiful solution tomorrow. They need a working solution today. I started thinking about the history of the Mercedes-Benz. On the left is the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen. It was the first "car." It didn't have a roof. It didn't have power steering. It didn't even have a windshield. But it wasn't a "bad" product. It was a revolutionary one. Why? Because for the first time in history, it solved the core problem: moving from point A to point B without a horse. It was 100% functional. On the right is the modern S-Class. It’s a masterpiece of luxury, whisper-quiet cabins, and AI-driven safety. But Mercedes couldn't have built the S-Class in 1886. They had to prove the "movement" worked first. The luxury was an evolution of the utility. This changed how I build today and my mindset. Now, my priority is always: Solve the problem first. Refine the experience second. We don't release "ugly" or "broken" things. We release high-utility, solid features that address our customers' biggest pain points immediately. Once we know the solution is working for them, we layer on the "luxury"—the refined UX, the sleek transitions, the extra polish. I’ve realized that waiting for "perfection" is often just a delay in helping my customers. I’d rather give them a solid "Motorwagen" that gets them where they need to go, than make them wait years for an "S-Class" that only exists on my laptop. For me, quality isn't just about how it looks. It's about how quickly and reliably it solves the problem.     What if you stopped working 48 hours before your project deadline?   This project management chart perfectly captures what happens to most teams. We laugh because it's painfully true.   But what if there was a way to avoid that chaotic "Project Reality" scenario altogether?   When I was a child, we would all be cramming the day before our school tests. During lunch breaks on test days, the school playground transformed into a sea of anxious children muttering facts while neglecting their parathas.   Then I witnessed something that would change my approach to deadlines.   The day before a major exam, I visited my neighbour to borrow her notes. I found her calmly playing carrom. "I never open my books 48 hours before an exam," she said with serene confidence.   I was shocked. Her grades? Consistently stellar.   This simple philosophy transformed my approach to project management:   Always allocate a 20% time buffer at the end of every project, during which no work is scheduled.   This buffer isn't for work. It's for reflection, quality improvements, and the strategic thinking that transforms good deliverables into exceptional ones.   Here are some benefits I have observed using this approach:   ▪️That last tweak in the colour or button dramatically improves UI ▪️Rework requests sharply decline ▪️Sales pitches achieve better outcomes ▪️The final touches which introduce the personalised elements help build strong customer relationships ▪️Board is much more engaged in the conversation and approvals go through smoothly ▪️Output is significantly streamlined and simplified multiplying impact ▪️Less stress all around   Do teams initially resist this approach? Absolutely.   "We're wasting productive time," or "the client/board doesn't need the material so much in advance of the meeting" are the common complaints.   But as teams experience the dramatic quality improvements and the elimination of those dreaded last-minute fire drills, attitudes change.   The next time you're planning a project, fight the urge to schedule work until the very last minute.     Most founders work harder, not smarter. They grind 12-hour days and wonder why they're stuck. I found a mental state that makes one day worth five. Neuroscience calls it "flow state". Most people think flow happens by accident. Peak performers engineer it on demand. Here's my protocol for accessing flow daily: 1. Environmental Design Your workspace must eliminate all cognitive friction. No notifications.  No visual distractions.  Temperature set to 68-70°F. Your environment either supports focus or destroys it - there's no middle ground. 2. Neurochemical Optimization Flow requires specific brain chemistry to activate. Strategic caffeine timing, proper hydration, and dopamine regulation through task design. You can't force flow, but you can create optimal conditions for it to emerge. 3. Challenge-Skill Balance Flow happens when task difficulty perfectly matches your ability level. Too easy creates boredom. Too hard creates anxiety. The sweet spot requires constant calibration as your skills develop. 4. Clear Objective Setting Vague goals kill flow before it starts. Every session needs crystal-clear outcomes and success metrics. Your brain needs to know exactly what winning looks like. 5. Immediate Feedback Loops Flow requires real-time progress signals. Build measurement systems that show results as you work. Progress visibility maintains the neurochemical state that sustains focus. 6. Deep Work Protocols 90-120 minute focused blocks with complete elimination of context switching. Your brain needs time to reach peak cognitive performance. Most founders never experience true flow because they never give their brain enough uninterrupted time. The result: One day in flow produces what most people achieve in five days of regular work. The difference between grinding and flowing determines everything.     Managing Time: Sense of Urgency I have heard people say that they do their best creative work when the deadline is near. Good for them. For most mortals though, they would say they wish they had more time. Most people procrastinate because the deadline feels distant. No pressure, so the mind lingers, watches Netflix instead. One way to beat that delay is to manufacture urgency. Imagine your deadlines far earlier than required. It forces you to move while the rest of the world is still relaxed. Finishing early gives something procrastinators never have: time for multiple rounds of refinement. You can think, revise, and improve without the panic of the final hour. It also protects your calendar. When surprises come, you are already ahead, not scrambling. When new issues come up, and they always do, you can handle well. There is this concept of Bounded Rationality, which is really common sensical. It suggests that your ability to think is limited by availability of time, information you have, and whatever else is occupying your head at that point. Cognitive load. All these suffer when you do things at the last minute. This approach turns time into an ally instead of an enemy. I create the pressure early, when I can still control it. I remove the stress later, when others are just starting to feel it. It is not procrastination. It is disciplined manipulation of time so I can deliver work that is sharper, calmer, and consistently ahead of schedule. #ESAmentor #TimeManagement

    What do Albert Einstein, Paul McCartney, and Virgina Woolf have in common – besides being highly influential figures in their respective fields? All three revealed that some of their most creative ideas came to them whilst they were walking or sleeping. Ok, so what’s the brain up to this time? Why should disengaging help #creativity? In 2014, a group of researchers at Stanford measured the positive effects of mild physical activity on creativity – and found that walking boosted creativity by between 50-80%. 👉 When students took a brisk walk around the college campus or walked at a relaxed pace on an indoor treadmill facing a blank wall – their performance on a test of creativity called the “Alternate Uses Task” improved by a whopping 81%! The AUT tests “divergent thinking,” which is the ability to explore many possible solutions, including blue sky or out of the box thinking. 👉 Walking outdoors produced the most novel and highest quality analogies, indicating that walking had a very specific benefit in improving creativity. 👉 Furthermore, walking made people more talkative, resulting in roughly 50% more total ideas being produced compared to when sitting. In other words, just going for a short walk led to a massive increase in creativity. Or, in the words of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, "All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.” Sleeping on it seems to have a similar creativity-enhancing effect as physical exercise. How many times have you come back to tackle a seemingly insurmountable problem after a sleep – or even a nap – and the pieces seemed to fall right into place? Studies have found that during the phase of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, the #brain is able to make new and novel connections between unrelated ideas, which is a key aspect of creativity. This state of sleep allows for the free association of ideas, which can lead to creative problem-solving and the generation of innovative ideas upon waking. REM sleep is thought to contribute to "incubating" creative ideas, as the brain reorganizes and consolidates memories, potentially leading to creative insights. Both physical exercise and sleep are mood-enhancers, which may contribute to enhancing creativity. Research suggests that positive moods can enhance creative thinking, making it easier for individuals to think flexibly and come up with innovative solutions. Positive emotional states often increase cognitive flexibility, broaden attention, and allow for more associations between ideas, which are key elements of creativity. Turns out, there are practical ways to spark more ‘Aha!’ moments in our lives. The next time you’re struggling to think of a solution to a problem, try taking a walk or sleeping on it – the evidence-backed cheat-codes for unlocking creativity!

    Boredom might be the most underrated productivity hack. I used to panic the second I wasn’t “doing” something. I’ll scroll through my calendar or inbox to check if I’ve missed something. But lately, I’ve been wondering: What if boredom isn’t a flaw to fix, but your edge? When I think back, my best ideas didn’t come while I was staring at a screen or crossing items off a to-do list. They came in stillness. On long walks. Staring out a window. Sitting with my thoughts and doing… absolutely nothing. Because boredom creates space. And in that space, imagination takes over. But that’s also where something else begins to happen, something deeper. I think boredom is the gateway to flow. Flow isn’t about forcing productivity. It’s about finding the zone where focus, clarity, and creativity align. And paradoxically, one of the best ways to get into flow… is to first do nothing. When your brain isn’t bombarded with noise, it starts making connections. It begins solving problems in the background. That’s why flow often follows boredom. Doing nothing isn’t laziness. It’s a reset. A chance for your mind to reorient, to notice patterns, to make sense of the unsolved. So now, I try to treat boredom like a meeting with my imagination. I schedule it in. No phones. No meetings. No distractions. Just stillness. It may feel uncomfortable at first. But give it time and you might just unlock your deepest thinking. Your most original ideas. Your entry point into flow. Because your next breakthrough may not come from pushing harder. It might be waiting for you… in boredom.

    Most people start with the plan. That’s why they lose the room. When you're trying to bring people along, it feels natural to show your thinking. Lay out the steps. Walk through the logic. But the how only works if people already believe in the where. If they don’t, you’re just explaining a plan no one asked for. Lead with the destination. Paint the picture of the world as it looks when you've arrived — specifically, compellingly, in a way that makes people think: 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵. Once they do, the how becomes a conversation they want to join. No one gets excited about a plan. They get excited about what the plan makes possible. Here’s what makes a destination land: 𝟭/ 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 Not "we'll improve X." Something specific: "A year from now, a customer can do in 2 minutes what takes them a day today." Specific futures are believable. Vague ones are forgettable. 𝟮/ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 A destination without reasoning feels like wishful thinking. Briefly name what you looked at — the current pain, the patterns you observed, the alternatives you weighed. It tells the room: this isn't a dream. It's a conclusion. That's what earns the benefit of the doubt. 𝟯/ 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 Cross-functional partners care about their priorities, not yours. Show them how the destination solves something they deeply care about. If they can't see themselves in it, they won't move toward it. 𝟰/ 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 Once someone believes in the destination, they'll feel the distance between here and there. That tension creates urgency. You don't need to sell the plan — the gap sells it for you. 𝟱/ 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆 The how will change. It always does. If you're too attached to it, partners feel like they're being handed a plan to execute, not a problem to solve together. The destination stays fixed. The path stays flexible. 𝟲/ 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 Most people rush through the vision to get to the plan. Flip it. The more vivid and compelling the destination, the less you'll need to sell the steps. If you want alignment, don't start with your plan. Start with the picture. Make it real enough that others can see themselves in it. The how will follow.     Will you randomly allow your team to take a break, without any reason? Well, I don't think twice before telling my team to "take the day off". Recently, these words slipped out naturally when my team member told me she had been staring at a blank screen for three hours. I could hear the guilt in her voice, the deadline anxiety, the silent pressure of letting the team down. But I've learned something powerful about creativity in this business: you can't force it like you force yourself to go to the gym. Last month, we had a massive client project. The team was pumped, ideas were flowing, and then…creative block hit. Hard. I watched one of our best content strategists try pushing through it. The result was 3 rounds of revisions, a frustrated client, and a team that felt like they were letting everyone down. That's when it clicked. Forcing creativity is like trying to squeeze water from a stone. You might get a few drops, but at what cost? Now, when my team tells me they're stuck, I don't see a productivity issue. I see a human being who needs space to refill their creative well. Yes, it was scary implementing this approach. Clients have deadlines. Bills need to be paid. Business needs to run. So we adapted: > We built buffer time into our timelines. > We created systems for backup content. > We started planning content calendars a few weeks in advance. But most importantly, we started treating creativity like the living, breathing thing it is. The results surprised even me: Better quality work. Happier clients and a team that brings their best selves to work. Running Sorted Brand, I've learned that one day of mental space produces better work than a week of forced creativity.
