    🔬 UX Concept Testing. How to test your UX design without spending too much time and effort polishing mock-ups and prototypes ↓ ✅ Concept testing is an early real-world check of design ideas. ✅ It happens before a new product/feature is designed and built. ✅ It helps you find an idea that will meet user and business needs. ✅ Always low-fidelity, always pre-launch, always involves real users. 🚫 Testing, not validation: ideas are not confirmed, but evaluated. ✅ What people think, do, say and feel are often very different things. ✅ You’ll need 5 users per feature or a group of features. ✅ You will discover 85% of usability problems with 5 users. ✅ You will discover 100% of UX problems with 20–40 users. 🚫 Poor surveys are a dangerous, unreliable tool to assess design. 🚫 Never ask users if they prefer one design over the other. ✅ Ask what adjectives or qualities they connect with a design. ✅ Tree testing: ask users to find content in your navigation tree. ✅ Kano model survey: get user’s sentiment about new features. ✅ First impression test: ask to rate a concept against your keywords. ✅ Preference test: ask to pick a concept that better conveys keywords. ✅ Competitive testing: like preference test, but with competitor’s design. ✅ 5-sec test: show for 5 secs, then ask questions to answer from memory. ✅ Monadic testing: segment users, test concepts in-depth per segment. ✅ Concept testing isn’t one-off, but a continuous part of the UX process. In design process, we often speak about “validation” of the new design. Yet as Kara Pernice rightfully noted, the word is confusing and introduces bias. It suggests that we know it works, and are looking for data to prove that. Instead, test, study, watch how people use it, see where the design succeeds and fails. We don’t need polished mock-ups or advanced prototypes to test UX concepts. The earlier you bring your work to actual users, the less time you’ll spend on designing and building a solution that doesn’t meet user needs and doesn’t have a market fit. And that’s where concept testing can be extremely valuable.     Designers, I used to think UX research was about talking to users as fast as possible. So I’d jump straight into interviews, surveys, usability tests, whatever felt right at the time. The problem? I’d come out with a lot of insights… and still struggle to make clear decisions. What I learned the hard way: Most research doesn’t fail because of bad tools. It fails because there’s no clear research plan. I made every classic mistake: → Vague research goals → Questions that quietly confirmed my own assumptions → Methods chosen because they sounded impressive → No clear idea of how insights would actually influence design Everything changed when I started planning research properly. Recently, I revisited my process using a guide from Lyssna, and it reinforced what experience had already taught me: a good research plan doesn’t slow you down, it saves weeks of rework. For example, on a checkout redesign project, my original question was: “Why are users dropping off?” Using a structured plan helped me reframe it into: → What assumptions are we testing? → Which user segment matters most right now? → What decision will this research unlock? That shift alone made the research more focused, easier to explain to stakeholders, and far more actionable. One quick tip that’s had the biggest impact on my work: Write research questions that drive decisions, not curiosity. Asking “Do users like this?” rarely helps. Asking “What prevents users from completing this on mobile?” actually does. If your research ever feels messy, hard to justify, or disconnected from design decisions, this is a solid reset.     Do you think your product is intuitive? Here's a hard truth: The way people experience a product is far different from how you think they will. Even the best teams have blind spots. What seems intuitive to you and your team might confuse your users. Only user testing can fix this. So what happens when you skip user testing? 1. You adjust your product's UX 2. You do QA 3. You release it 4. You discover parts of the design aren't intuitive 👉 Result: Wasted time, money, and resources. But there's a better way: Test your prototypes with real users before development. Why it matters: 1. You only spend designer time, not dev resources 2. You catch usability issues early 3. You'll launch designs that users understand 4. You lower the risk of expensive rework Don't gamble with your product's success. Invest in user testing early and often. It’s not enough for a design to look great; it must deliver a great user experience too. Have you “really” tested the product you are building with “people” who will be using it?

    One of the most common mistakes teams make when evaluating early product features is asking users whether they like an idea and treating the answer as evidence. Decades of behavioral research and very practical product research work show that this is a weak signal. People are generally bad at predicting what they will use, adopt, or pay for in the future, especially when there is no cost, effort, or tradeoff attached to their answer. That is why early feature evaluation should focus on behavior rather than belief. When a feature is only a concept, a smoke test can already tell you a lot. Exposing users to the idea through a landing page, announcement, or waitlist and observing whether they click or sign up answers a very specific question. Is this worth building at all, not whether it sounds good in theory. When an idea becomes clickable, fake door tests bring the decision closer to real behavior. Placing a realistic entry point inside the product and observing who actually tries to use it shows intent in context. The power of this method comes from the fact that users believe the feature is real at the moment of interaction. Transparency afterward is essential, but the action itself is the signal. For complex or technically risky features, especially AI, automation, or recommendation systems, Wizard of Oz prototyping allows teams to observe natural behavior before automation exists. Users interact with what looks like a fully functional system, while a human performs the work behind the scenes. This reveals expectations, decision making, and breakdowns that are invisible in abstract discussions. Concierge MVPs go one step further by making the human involvement explicit. Here, the value is delivered manually, often in a high touch way, to see whether users actually engage, return, and benefit. If people do not use or value the service when friction is low and quality is high, automation will not fix the underlying problem. Across all of these approaches, the principle is the same. Early feature evaluation should not ask people what they like. It should watch what they do when a real opportunity to engage is placed in front of them.

    Testing with users isn’t just for the end. Or is it? I love Artiom Dashinsky’s take that vibe coding lets him validate ideas with real users much faster. Instead of running upfront research, he watches what people do, fixes issues on the fly, and ships new ideas directly into production.(https://lnkd.in/gc_U2w9Z) That kind of fast energy is exciting. It’s harder to do with big teams or strict systems that have a lot of compliance, but it points to a future where building and testing happen at the same time. I can see this leading to better products. But if the value of your product is hidden behind too many steps, users end up doing the hard work just to get through it. That might be okay for simple tools, but in more complex ones, you're turning users into lab mice. There's a middle ground where gut instinct and research work together. In our work with UX metrics in Helio, we see how helpful it is to get quick structured feedback from users while building. As ideas become more complex, it's even more important to know when to test and when to watch. My take is that user testing is useful at every stage of the design process, not just at the end. At each step in ideation, different types of user feedback help guide the work. In the early stage, attitudinal UX metrics help frame the challenge. As the concept develops, behavioral UX metrics help assess potential. Once the product is live, performance metrics help finalize choices. Even if you're moving fast with vibe coding, quick testing with users can help you make stronger design decisions along the way. I’m excited for what’s next.     🚶♀️ Beyond the Lab: Designing Wearables for Real Life 🚶♀️ When it comes to wearable medical devices, it’s not enough to test them in a lab for an hour or two. Real lives, real routines, and real contexts matter. That’s why early and ongoing user research is non-negotiable if we want devices that are safe, effective, and genuinely adopted. Some of the most powerful insights come from: 🎒Wear studies – seeing how devices hold up across days or weeks, not just minutes. 📔Diary studies – capturing the “in the moment” frustrations, workarounds, and delights that rarely show up in a final interview. 👀 Ethnography – stepping into users’ worlds, understanding how culture, environment, and daily life shape device use. Too often, usability testing gets left until late in development, treated as a checkbox. But by then, it’s expensive (and painful) to make meaningful changes. The truth is: the earlier and more often you involve intended users, the fewer surprises (and failures) you’ll face at the end. Adhesives that peel with sweat, skin irritation, or devices that feel too visible under clothing. Placement matters too: can the user comfortably reach and see the device when they need to interact with it? Does it allow for discretion and everyday comfort? As someone who’s spent years advocating for this, I can tell you, the difference between a device that works in theory and one that works in real life is always found in these studies. 👉 If you’re developing / working on a wearable medical device: Have you found value in these kinds of of studies?     The key to effective usability testing? Approaching it with a Human-Obsessed mindset. This is crucial. It determines whether your improvements are based on assumptions or real user insights. It guides how you engage with: → User needs → Common tasks → Pain points → and Preferences throughout their journey on your site. Usability testing isn’t straightforward. It requires a deep understanding of user behavior and continuous refinement. How do you start a Human-Obsessed usability testing approach? Follow these steps: 1. Set Specific Goals — Focus on areas like navigation and checkout.  — Know what you aim to improve. 2. Match Test Participants to Users — Ensure your participants reflect your actual user base.  — Diverse feedback is key. 3. Design Realistic Tasks — Reflect common user goals like finding a product or making a purchase.  — Keep it real. 4. Choose the Right Method — Decide between moderated (in-depth) and unmoderated (scalable) tests.  — Pick what suits your needs. 5. Use Effective Tools — Leverage tools like UserTesting or Lookback.  — Integrate analytics for comprehensive insights. 6. Create a True Test Environment — Mirror your live site.  — Ensure participants are focused and undistracted. 7. Pilot Testing — Run a pilot test to refine your setup and tasks.  — Adjust before full deployment. 8. Define clear usability goals Decide what “good” looks like. Measure task success rate, completion time, and satisfaction. ✅ 2. Pick the right method Moderated, unmoderated, or remote. Match the test to your goals and resources. ✅ 3. Use realistic user scenarios Focus on actual workflows like “checkout,” “apply filter,” or “create account.” ✅ 4. Recruit real users Get both new and experienced users to uncover different challenges. ✅ 5. Let them think aloud Silence speaks volumes. Watch where users hesitate or get stuck. ✅ 6. Track key metrics Completion time, number of retries, and error rates show real patterns. ✅ 7.     Did you know that 88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a website after a bad user experience? That's right—poor usability isn't just annoying; it's costing you customers. Here are five critical considerations for usability testing that can make or break your product's success. → Consider all parties. Your product isn't just used by one type of person. If you're only testing with your primary user group, you're setting yourself up for failure. So, identify all the players in your ecosystem and include them in your testing. → Journey mapping. Create comprehensive journey maps that include touchpoints for all user types. Understand how different user roles intersect and influence each other, as these intersections often hide the biggest usability issues. → Happy path vs. recovery path. Don't just test the ideal user journey. Design tests to deliberately break things and see how your product handles errors. A good recovery experience can turn a potential "rage quit" into a moment of delight that keeps users engaged and invested. → Early and frequent testing. Begin usability testing early in the design phase to catch issues sooner and iterate quickly. Start with low-fidelity prototypes and test often. It's easier (and cheaper) to fix usability issues on a wireframe than on a fully coded product. → Rapid iterative testing. Consider rapid iterative testing instead of traditional methods. Test on Monday, make changes on Tuesday, test again on Wednesday, and so on. This approach allows you to fail fast, learn faster, and keep your team aligned throughout the development process.
