It’s difficult to find a causation between how a change in filters UX has increased conversion or improved retention or reduced churn. Typically we need to measure at 2 levels — locally (if people use filters more efficiently) and globally (how successful people are at their journeys). Also, UX metrics that work well in one environment will not be applicable in others. E.g. Time on Task is difficult to measure in products with non-linear workflows since there are no linear journeys that people take repeatedly. Sometimes retention isn’t particularly useful either as employees can’t choose the product they use for work. There, we need to track retention on the level of features, flows, internal tools we are building — and focus our work on how to dial up success moments and dial down frustrations and mistakes. Still, in many products there are central hubs that a lot of users are going through. In fact, every product is like a city. And so if we can improve the experience across most frequent flows, features and tasks, we can have quite an impact — and drive up business metrics as result (over time). No business can be successful without successful customers. If business goals are fluffy and unclear, we have to build up product value from user needs (task analysis). And a way there is to study what users need to do, what would make them successful and where they currently struggle. Then we make a business case from there — and focus on what matters most to the business. A helpful guide by NN/g to get started, but I would highly recommend to customize the kit for your needs — chances are high that you will need a very different and very specific metrics to track success. Customer discovery via functional prototypes + PostHog is night & day better than the old school way of asking for feedback on Figma mockups. Here's why: I get to observe actual user behavior instead of asking the user to guess how they might use my product. My favorite example of why this matters comes from a Sony Walkman user study. They asked a bunch of people what they thought about a yellow walkman and they said "so sporty! not boring like the black one!". And yet, when they were given the opportunity to take a walkman home after the study, everyone picked the black one. We learned a lot more from user behavior than we did expressed preferences. Here's my setup for now observing user behavior from prototypes: 1. Create a functional prototype in your favorite prototyping tool (Bolt, Lovable, Reforge Build, Magic Patterns, Claude Code) 2. Ask the prototyping tool to integrate PostHog analytics 3. Ask the prototyping tool to instrument key user actions in PostHog Then you get all of these ways of observing actual behavior: - DAUs \ WAUs \ retention curves - I can actually see if people come back and use my prototype instead of taking their word for it - Action metrics dashboards - I can see what actions people are taking vs not - Post-usage survey - I can add a built-in pop-up survey to ask the user a question about the experience after they have engaged with the prototype - Session replays - I can see exactly where people are clicking and how they are using the product to identify usability issues - Heatmaps - I can see what part of my design is working across all sessions I'd never go back to testing with just a mockup after this.

💡Design System Metrics Design system brings two main benefits: Consistency and Efficiency. It helps minimize usability issues and maintain design consistency. However, without metrics, it can be hard to tell how well the system performs. That’s why it’s recommended to define metrics up front when establishing a foundation for your design system. Here are some popular design system metrics: Product design process: ✔ Adoption rate. What % of products use the design system? The more the design system is used, the more time is saved. ✔ Average task completion time. The time designers spend on completing the task (for example, designing a new user flow). Compare before/after the design system. ✔ Design to development time. Design system should speed up the handoff process from designers to developers. ✔ Component usage. The number of components used across products vs the total number of components available in the design system. Compare the usage of components in design (Figma) and code (Github). This will help you identify unused components. ✔ Effect on code. Measure code complexity and how much code developers change with each release. ✔ Number of component detachments (Figma). If some components are often detached, you won’t have the right picture of how effective the design system is. Design output quality: ✔ User interface design consistency. # of visual inconsistencies in a final design. ✔ Error rates and usability issues. Whether the design system reduces error rates and usability issues. ✔ Design documentation state. % of outdated docs. Outdated docs increase the risk of releasing inconsistent design. ✔ Accessibility score. How the design system improves accessibility (e.g., WCAG score) Business: ✔ Return on Investment (ROI). ROI is a key metric that stakeholders analyze to understand if the investment in DS is paying off. ✔ Team satisfaction score. How do team members feel about the design system? Collect feedback to understand what problems team members face using a design system. ✔ Tech debt. After having the design system in place, there should be less tech debt. ✔ Average time to market. The time the product team spends on releasing a new feature/scenario. Compare before/after the DS. ✔ Company scalability. How does workload capacity change after having the design system? ✔ Brand consistency. 💡 System Usability Scale (SUS): A Simple Yet Powerful Tool for Measuring Usability The System Usability Scale (SUS) is a quick, efficient, and cost-effective method for evaluating product usability from the user's perspective. Developed by John Brooke in 1986, SUS has been extensively tested for nearly 30 years and remains a trusted industry standard for assessing user experience (UX) across various systems. 1️⃣ Collecting user feedback Collect responses from users who have interacted with your product to gain meaningful insights using the SUS questionnaire, which consists of 10 alternating positive and negative statements, each rated on a 5-point Likert scale from "Strongly Disagree" (1) to "Strongly Agree" (5). 📌 Important: The SUS questionnaire can be customised, but whether it should be is a debated topic. The IxDF - Interaction Design Foundation suggests customisation to better fit specific contexts, while NNGroup recommends using the standard version, as research supports its validity, reliability, and sensitivity. 2️⃣ Calculation To calculate the SUS score for each respondent: • For positive (odd-numbered) statements, subtract 1 from the user’s response. • For negative (even-numbered) statements, subtract the response from 5. • Sum all scores and multiply by 2.5 to convert them to a 0-100 scale. 3️⃣ Interpreting the Results • Scores above 85 indicate an excellent usability, • Scores above 70 - good usability, • Scores below 68 may suggest potential usability issues that need to be addressed. 🔎 Pros & Cons of Using SUS ✳️ Advantages: • Valid & Reliable – it provides consistent results across studies, even with small samples, and is valid because it accurately measures perceived usability. • Quick & Easy – requires no complex setup, takes only 1-2 minutes to complete. • Correlates with Other Metrics – works alongside NPS and other UX measures. • Widely respected and used - a trusted usability metric since 1986, backed by research, industry benchmarks, and extensive real-world application across various domains. ❌ Disadvantages: • SUS was not intended to diagnose usability problems – it provides only a single overall score, which may not give enough insight into specific aspects of the interface or user interaction. • Subjective User Perception – it measures how users subjectively feel about a system's ease of use and overall experience, rather than objective performance metrics. • Interpretation Challenges – If users haven’t interacted with the product for long enough, their perception may be inaccurate or limited. • Cultural and language biases can affect SUS results, as users from different backgrounds may interpret questions differently or have varying levels of familiarity with the system, influencing their responses. 💬 What are your thoughts? Design based on facts, not vibes. Here’s why UX research matters ↓ Skipping UX research when designing a website is like assembling IKEA furniture without the instructions. Sure, you might end up with a chair, but will it hold your weight—or will it wobble until it collapses? UX research isn’t just another box to check. It’s the foundation that keeps everything from falling apart. Without UX research, you’re designing based on vibes, not facts. And that’s how “cool” designs end up confusing users, tanking conversions, and turning into “oh no” moments after launch. So, what does UX research actually do? → Spot user pain points before they become your pain points. → Prioritize features and designs using real data instead of educated guesses. → Create experiences users love, not just tolerate. → Boost key metrics like engagement and conversions (because let’s be honest, that’s the end goal). So, how do you make UX research happen? By staying curious, asking great questions, and using the right tools: 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 Talk to real humans—ask them what’s frustrating, what’s working, and what they need. You’ll learn more in one conversation than you will from staring at analytics. 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 Put your design in front of users early. Watch where they click, hesitate, or get stuck. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀 Find out where users click, scroll, and hover. They’ll tell you exactly where your design nails it or falls flat. 𝗔/𝗕 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 When you can’t decide between two options, let users vote with their actions. Data > opinions. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 No, it’s not copying—it’s learning what works in your industry and where you can stand out. 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 Walk in your users’ shoes. Every step of the way. From discovery to conversion, figure out where they’re thrilled and where they’re frustrated. Here’s the bottom line: Fixing problems post-launch is a headache you don’t need. UX research saves you time, money, and the embarrassment of explaining why users can’t figure out your shiny new design. As UX researchers, we often rely on survey totals. We sum up Likert scale responses across a few items and call it a metric - satisfaction, usability, engagement, trust. It’s fast, familiar, and widely accepted. But if you’ve ever questioned whether a survey is truly capturing what matters, that’s where Item Response Theory (IRT) steps in. IRT is more than just a statistical model - it’s a smarter way to design, evaluate, and optimize questionnaires. While total scores give you a general snapshot, IRT gives you the diagnostic toolkit. It shifts your focus from just what the total score is to how each question behaves across different user types. Instead of treating every item as equally valuable, IRT assumes that each question has its own characteristics - its own difficulty level, its ability to discriminate between users with different trait levels (like low vs. high satisfaction), and even its tendency to generate noise. It mathematically models the likelihood of a particular response based on the person’s underlying trait (e.g., engagement) and the specific properties of that item. This lets you see which items are doing real work - and which ones are just adding bloat. Let’s say you’re trying to measure perceived product enjoyment. You include five questions. One of them - "I enjoy using this product" - is endorsed by nearly everyone. Another one - "This product makes me feel inspired" - gets more varied responses. Under IRT, the first item would be flagged as too easy; it doesn’t help you separate highly engaged users from moderately engaged ones. The second item, if it cleanly differentiates users with different enjoyment levels, would be seen as high in discrimination power. That’s the kind of insight you won’t get from a simple average. One of the biggest advantages of IRT is that it allows you to assess not just people’s responses, but the quality of the items themselves. You can identify and remove redundant or low-informative questions, focus your surveys to measure what matters most, and retain high precision with fewer items. This is a huge win for both survey respondents and UX researchers, especially when you're working in product environments where every question has to earn its place. IRT also enables more advanced applications. You can build adaptive surveys- ones that tailor themselves in real time to each participant. You can create item banks that offer equivalent measurement across time or populations. And you can track individual-level changes in UX perceptions over time more reliably, which is something traditional scoring methods often miss. I use IRT models to analyze UX questionnaires in my own work, especially when I want to make sure each item is pulling its weight. It also leads to clearer communication with designers, PMs, and engineers, because I can show why a certain item matters or doesn’t, backed by data that makes sense.

Try this if you struggle with defining and writing design outcomes: Map your solutions to proven UX Metrics Let's start small. Learn the Google HEART framework H - Happiness: How do users feel about your product? 📈 Metrics: Net Promotor Score, App Rating E - Engagement : Are users engaging with your app? 📈 Metrics: # of Conversions, Session Length A - Adoption: Are you getting new users? 📈 Metrics: Download Rate, Sign Up Rate R - Retention Are users returning and staying loyal? 📈 Metrics: Churn Rate, Subscription Renewal T - Task Success Can users complete goals quickly? 📈 Metrics: Error Rates, Task Completion Rate These are all bridges between design and business goals. HEART can be used for the whole app or specific features. 👉 Let's tie it to an example case study problem: Students studying overseas need to know what recipes can be made with ingredients available at home, as eating out regularly is too expensive and unhealthy. ✅ Outcome Example: While the app didn't launch, to track success and impact, I would have monitored the following: - Elevated app ratings and positive feedback, indicating students found the app enjoyable and useful - Increased app usage, implying more students frequently cooking at home - Growth in new sign-ups, reflecting more students discovering the app - Lower attrition rates and more subscription renewals, showing the app's continued value - Decrease in incomplete recipe attempts, suggesting the app was successful in helping students achieve their cooking goals. The HEART framework is a perfect tracker of how well the design solved or could solve the stated business problem. 💡Remember: Without data, design is directionless. But how exactly can we measure success in a UX research project? Here are a few critical steps and metrics to consider: 1. Align with Business Goals: ↳ Start by identifying the KPIs tied to business goals. Whether it’s conversion, adoption, or drop-off rates, the research should connect to metrics that matter for the company’s success. By linking research insights directly to business outcomes, you show stakeholders how UX impacts their key priorities. 2. Behavioral Metrics: These are the data points tied to how users interact with your product, such as: ↳ Task Success Rate: How many users successfully complete the task? ↳ Time-on-Task: How long does it take users to complete a task? ↳ User Error Rate: How often do users make mistakes during the task? Tracking these helps identify friction points in the user journey and quantifies the effectiveness of your designs. 3. Attitudinal Metrics: These reflect how users feel about the product or experience: ↳ Net Promoter Score (NPS): How likely are users to recommend your product? Although this one is definitely not my favorite, most businesses care a lot about NPS. ↳ Customer Satisfaction (CSAT): How satisfied are users with the product? ↳ Perceived Ease of Use: How easy do users think the product is to use? Gathering these insights gives you a clear sense of user sentiment and overall satisfaction. 4. Usability Metrics: For more specific insights, you can track usability metrics like: ↳ System Usability Scale (SUS): A quick way to assess perceived usability. ↳ Completion Rates: How many users completed a given task without assistance? 5. Impact on KPIs: Finally, after research is complete and changes are implemented, re-measure these metrics to show improvements. Demonstrating a reduction in error rates or an increase in task success ties UX research directly to improved product performance. By clearly connecting UX metrics to business KPIs, you help stakeholders see the concrete value that research brings to the table. 💬 A couple of years ago, I was helping a SaaS startup to make sense of their low retention rates. The real problem? The C-suite hesitated to allow direct conversations with users. Their reasoning was rooted in their desire to maintain strictly "white-glove-level relationships" with their high-paying clients and avoid bothering them with "unnecessary" queries. Not going deeper into the validity of their rationale, but here are some things I did instead to avoid guesswork or giving assumptive recommendations: 1️⃣ Worked with internal teams: Obvious, right? But when each team works in their silo, lots of things fall through the cracks. So I got customer success, support and sales teams in the room together. We had several group discussions and identified critical common pain points they had heard from clients. 2️⃣ Analytics deep-dive: Being a SaaS platform, the startup had extensive analytics built into their product. So we spent days analyzing usage patterns, funnels, and behavior flow charts. The data spoke louder than words in revealing where users spent most of their time and where drop-offs were most common. 3️⃣ Social media as primary feedback channels: We have also started monitoring public forums, review sites, and tracked social media mentions. We collected a lot of useful insights through this unfiltered lens into users' many frustrations and occasional delights. 4️⃣ Support tickets: This part was very tedious, but the support tickets were a goldmine of information. By classifying and analyzing the nature of user concerns, we were able to identify features that users found challenging or non-intuitive. 5️⃣ Competitive analysis: And of course, we looked at the competitors. What were users saying about them? What features or offerings were making them switch or consider alternatives? 6️⃣ Internal usability tests: While I couldn't talk to users directly, I organized usability tests internally. By simulating user scenarios and tasks, we identified main friction points in the critical user journeys. Ideal? No. But definitely eye-opening for the entire team building the platform. 7️⃣ Listening in on sales demos: Last but not least, by attending sales demos as silent observers, we got to understand the questions potential customers asked, their concerns, and their initial reactions to the software. Nothing can replace solid, well-organized user research. But through these alternative methods, we managed to paint a more holistic picture of the end-to-end product experience without ever directly reaching out to users. And these methods not only helped in pinpointing the issues leading to low retention, but also offered actionable recommendations for improvement. → And the result?
