    When I translate a sentence between two languages I don't just do mechanical text conversion - it's a much deeper process involving culture, style, reflection etc. Using reasoning models can allow us to rethink computerized language translation as more then just a text conversion task and make it more human. I think this is true for many more tasks as well and scaling these language models along the reasoning dimension will unlock these applications one by one as these thinking models become good at more then just math and coding tasks. This new paper explores how Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) with Chain-of-Thought capabilities are transforming machine translation. The authors argue that LRMs fundamentally change translation by reframing it as a dynamic reasoning task rather than simple text conversion. They identify three foundational shifts: 1️⃣ Contextual Coherence: LRMs can resolve ambiguities and preserve discourse structure through explicit reasoning about cross-sentence context (or even lack of context) 2️⃣ Cultural Intentionality: LRMs can adapt outputs by inferring speaker intent, audience expectations, and socio-linguistic norms 3️⃣ Self-Reflection: LRMs can perform real-time error correction during inference, showing better robustness compared to simple X→Y mapping https://lnkd.in/g-vfm2te

    GenAI in translation and localization platforms - how it may go down in the next few months. Jourik Ciesielski and I adapted CSA's localization maturity model to map and predict the progress of generative AI adoption in translation and localization workflows. This vision sees incrementally more functions in TMS intertwine with OpenAI, Gemini, Llama 2, and other models. Instead of sunsetting the core features of TMS, they will breathe new life into them. Translation memory becomes "cache", glossaries become "RAG" retrievers and workflows become Langchain. The process of ramping up GenAI in TMS will continue until a next-generation content pipeline built on GenAI displaces it in volume and impact. This transition will enable developers to wrestle control of language from localization managers, and the localization industry will become an embedded function in every app. Today's translation management systems combined probably handle 25-50 billion words per month. The day when GenAI handles 10x that may be closer than we think. #genai #localization #translation

    We tested 6 AI models on translation quality across 6 languages. At first glance the numbers told a clean story. Then human QA added a chapter. As part of our ongoing translation quality research, we evaluated subtitle translation from English into Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and both Chinese variants — 1,002 subtitle segments scored using two industry-standard reference-free metrics (MetricX-24 and COMETKiwi). The top-line result: TranslateGemma-12b, a model specifically trained for translation, ranked #1 across all six language pairs. The second-place model was Gemini Flash Lite, which consistently beat full-weight Claude Sonnet and both GPT-5.4 variants. The separation came almost entirely from translation fidelity, not fluency: all models produced reasonably natural-sounding output, but specialized training made a measurable difference in how accurately meaning was preserved. However, human QA found something the metrics had missed entirely. TranslateGemma ranked #1 in both Chinese variants. When our linguists reviewed the Traditional Chinese output, the model was outputting Simplified Chinese for both zh-CN and zh-TW language codes. We investigated community reports suggesting zh-Hant as the correct explicit language code and retested. The result: 76% of segments still came back in Simplified Chinese, 14% correctly Traditional, 10% ambiguous — with MetricX-24 and COMETKiwi showing identical high scores throughout and no indication of a problem. As it turns out, this is a confirmed issue caused by training data bias: TranslateGemma's fine-tuning corpus is heavily skewed toward Simplified Chinese. The language code is accepted without error but not honored by the model's weights. It affects all model sizes (4B, 12B, 27B) — upgrading to a larger model size won't resolve it. A workaround exists, but your quality scores will look fine the whole time. That's exactly the problem for any team running automated-only validation. A few other findings worth noting: • Claude ranked last in Japanese, with a fluency-fidelity mismatch: output that reads naturally but diverges from source meaning — the hardest error type to catch in QA review • DeepSeek, strong across most languages, dropped sharply for Thai • Japanese was consistently the most difficult language for all models; Chinese the most consistent The full report, including per-language breakdowns, methodology, and segment-level examples, is linked in the comments.     🌍 TranslateGemma: 4B, 12B, 27B translation models with OCR Google introduces TranslateGemma, a family of open-weight translation models (4B, 12B, 27B) that distill Gemini's translation capabilities into the Gemma 3 architecture through a two-stage SFT + RL pipeline. → The 12B model outperforms the 27B Gemma 3 baseline on WMT24++. This 2x efficiency gain comes from fine-tuning Gemma 3 for this specific task. Another good sign for small language models! → Synthetic data generation uses Gemini to translate MADLAD-400, generating up to 10K examples per language pair. The training mixture includes 30% general instruction data to maintain chatbot capabilities. → The RL reward combines MetricX-QE (learned regression metric), AutoMQM (span-level error predictor), ChrF (character n-gram overlap), a naturalness autorater using the policy model as LLM-as-judge, and a generalist reward model to prevent capability regression. Token-level and sequence-level rewards are combined during advantage computation. → Human evaluation on WMT25 confirms the automatic metrics for most directions, but Japanese→English shows a regression due to named entity errors. This is a classic failure mode when optimizing for learned metrics that do not penalize proper noun mistakes heavily enough. → Multimodal translation survives the specialization process. Performance on the Vistra image translation benchmark actually improves without any multimodal-specific fine-tuning, suggesting the text translation improvements transfer to OCR-style tasks. It's a well-executed distillation recipe with an interesting reward ensemble design that addresses a known weakness of pure MQM optimization. Note that it doesn't seem perfect yet, since the Japanese→English regression suggests blind spots for named entities. I would've liked comparisons with recent strong baselines and bigger models to showcase the efficiency of this specialization. Finally, it's too bad the model is English-centric and uses this language as the main pivot. Probably a data-related issue, but it would've been neat to leverage the latent representations to perform any-to-any translations.

    AI Translation Is No Longer Experimental, In recent months, two of the most influential forces in tech and policy—the European Union and Google—have independently reached the same conclusion: LLM-based translation is now fluent, usable, and low-risk. The EU AI Act, which came into force in August 2024, classifies AI translation as “minimal” or “low risk” for most real-world use cases—meaning it does not require human oversight unless lives, rights, or legal obligations are at stake. Even the EU itself now publishes most of its content using machine translation. For high-level or risky situations, MT content needs to be labeled (as we watermark translated pages for the Spanish Tax Office in document translation). At the same time, Google has softened its long-standing skepticism. MT translated content used to be penalised, but this is no longer the case, so long as it provides value. What a shift in how content is created, indexed, and discovered globally. Surely we will see a rush of multilingual MT content on websites for a while. Although I wonder if it will be sustainable or will make sense in the long term as agents do the "retrieval" work for us. We're entering the post–post-editing era—where translation is no longer a hidden layer of localization, but an agentic task carried out by LLMs, embedded in our workflows, and judged by outcome, not method.
