When I assess team dynamics, I never ask “what’s your communication process?” Instead, I ask: - Who gets to disagree here? - Who offers the ‘obvious’ idea? - Who names the elephant in the room? - And who pushes things forward when no one’s ready? These aren’t personality traits but team conversation roles. And David Kantor’s research shows that high-performing teams cycle through 4 roles in real-time conversations: 1. Initiator - proposes direction 2. Supporter - builds on the idea 3. Challenger - tests assumptions 4. Observer - brings perspective But here’s what’s not obvious: These roles are not titles, archetypes, or fixed styles. They’re functions and they only show up when the team culture allows them. And that’s where 🧠 team psychological safety comes in. When it's high: - The Challenger dares to disagree without fear of judgment - The Observer can name what others avoid without being dismissed - The Supporter feels safe amplifying ideas, not just agreeing - And the Initiator doesn’t dominate out of silence, but lead within dialogue Because effective team communication isn’t about being present in the room and talking. I’ve trained in rooms where people speak English, but think in Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil Same company, same goals, but completely different communication styles. We love patting ourselves on the back for being diverse. But when a South Indian team feels a North Indian manager is "too aggressive," or a Gen Z employee thinks their Gen X boss is "dismissive", we call it a "communication gap." When really it's India's invisible boardroom barrier. Because while communicating, you’re navigating: 🔹 Cultural nuances 🔹 Generational gaps 🔹 Language preferences 🔹 Urban vs regional perspectives And if you're not adapting, you’re alienating. Here's my 3A’s of Cross-cultural communication framework: 1. Awareness: Recognize that your communication style is shaped by region, generation, and upbringing. It's not universal. 2. Adaptation: Match your message to your audience. One style doesn't fit all rooms. 3. Ask: When in doubt, clarify: What does yes mean here? How do you prefer feedback? The next time he met the client, he bowed slightly, held the business card with both hands, and said: “It’s an honor to work with you.” The client’s smile was different this time—warm, genuine, approving. STOP USING BUZZWORDS, START SPEAKING ENGLISH If you can’t explain a concept in plain English or better yet, in a single sentence you probably don’t understand it yet. I’ve sat in too many meetings where everyone nods along at terms no one actually understands. Or, even worse, everyone THINKS they understand, but they all have a completely different definition and then wonder why the conversation is going nowhere. “Cross-screen convergence” "Holistic measurement framework" "Cloud native measurement stacks" Say enough buzzwords in a row ("Leveraging AI-powered DCO to drive scalable creative versioning across omnichannel touchpoints.") and people stop asking questions. But that’s the moment you should lean in. The best strategists aren’t fluent in jargon. They’re fluent in translation. Here’s what’s worked for me and why TVREV is known for our ability to express complex thoughts in plain English without dumbing it down. 1️⃣ Swap buzzwords for metaphors. “buy this thing now" vs "think good thoughts about us” beats “performance vs brand.” 2️⃣ Ask, “How would you explain this to your grandmother?” 3️⃣ When in doubt: simplify, then simplify again. The question-asker got the gist, the engineer learned a valuable lesson about audience-focused communication, and we all got a little closer to hitting that launch button.
