Basics of... Multi-Cloud
This time I want to try something new in the #BasicsOf series… I want to write a simple definition of a term on my own!
So, the term is #Multi-Cloud
I am almost certain that you are, privately, already a "Multi-Cloud" user. You store your pictures in the Google Cloud (Google Photos), your office documents in the Microsoft Cloud (OneDrive) and perhaps even have a local Network Attached Storage (NAS) at home which you can access remotely. With that setup you already use a private and two public clouds! A Multi-Cloud environment.
Now imagine you want to move your Google Photos storage to OneDrive and your office documents to Google Photos... For security reasons for example or just because it is more convenient to you... or you want to backup your pictures from Google Photos to you own NAS (privacy!!). This is either very difficult to do or even impossible!
And this is the challenge for enterprises. They have various "Workloads" running on very specific and pre-defined Clouds. Normally "hard locked". And the challenge going forward will be that companies want to move these "Workloads" from one Cloud to the next or even back to their own local infrastructure.
If you want to read more details and understand the basics of defining your own enterprise Multi-Cloud strategy, you can find more details here: https://www.dellemc.com/en-us/collaterals/unauth/white-papers/services/five-operating-model-considerations-whitepaper.pdf
