Basics of... Data Mining

The idea behind this edition of "Basics of..." came from my son who had to hand-in a paper regarding Data Mining.

“If we have data, let’s look at data. If all we have are opinions, let’s go with mine.” – Jim Barksdale, former Netscape CEO

As the statement above makes it clear in a funny way, "data" is important for decision making. And even if this term is called "Data MINING", it is not about purely extracting data from a "Big Data" repository but rather find patterns included in the data allowing us to draw conclusions or make decisions.

In fact, many persons consider Data Mining as nothing else than a category of "Machine learning". But as this expression became more and more popular, people tend to use it a buzzword or for marketing purpose.

Also, Data Mining is different from Data Analysis as is uses Machine Learning intelligence to discover patterns that are not obvious if you "simply" analyzed the data. You normally use Data Analysis to look at the outcome of an action but Data Mining can give you a prediction of future actions.
