Basics of... DevOps

DevOps (or BizDevOps or DevSecOps or DataOps or, or, or...) is a contraction of various words describing mainly functions in enterprises. In that case "Development" (so Software Development) and Operations (running the infrastructure). The additional "Sec" being "Security" as example.

Companies often have various IT departments like development, operations, security and others. Often these departments work in Silos. So when the Software team writes or implements a new software or update then they do everything they need to do in their "silo". And once they consider their "job done", they potentially send the new software to the Security department and then hand it over to the "Operations" team to distribute it and then finally run the software on the company's IT infrastructure.

But what happens if the priorities of the Security or the Operations team where not considered in the software or hardware infrastructure development? Well then it will be many back and forth between these teams to get a "working" version or even worth the software/hardware could put the daily business at risk or not be implemented at all in the company.

DevOps is trying to fix this by including all these functions "upfront" in the software & hardware development so that all needs and requests are considered right from the start.

But DevOps is not just about processes and features. It is also about ways to "automate" (Infrastructure as a Code) the distribution and operations of any software & hardware and even more important: change the culture of an enterprise and it's (IT) employees. To ensure DevOps is really successful you need to change how people of these different silos interact and behave. In the interest of the bigger company scope.

So implementing a real DevOps approach is not about "repainting" current people/teams/silos with a new name but really change people, tools and processes to ensure a smooth development, distribution and operations of IT assets.
