Basics of... IoT (Internet of Things)

The "IoT" acronym is used more and more commonly in today's IT conversations. And what I discovered is that a lot of persons have different opinions of what "Internet of Things" actually mean. Here comes another "explanation try" from "Basics of..."

The most common and overall definition of IoT is probably "Every device with a sensor, a processor and/or software which connects to the Internet to exchange information"

As IoT is an emerging concept and technology, many use it to describe various more specifics things like PC's or Smartphones (so, devices with a "person" behind them) but IoT devices are potentially many more things like "simple" embedded senors, cars, fridges, lamps and so on...

Another term often use as synonym for IoT is Edge Computing. Because all of these device "compute" something at the "edge" of the internet and not in a data centre or in the "cloud". Technology tends to go through various cycles of centralisation and decentralisation... and IoT is another cycle of decentralisation as the computing power of connected "edge" devices become bigger and bigger. And this allows the devices themselves to analyse data (also using Artificial Intelligence) and not have to rely on a central server for these tasks.
