    Humans are terrible at maintaining secrets at scale. Look at the history of public sector data breaches that could have been avoided with a de identification pipeline. Unlocking data value without compromising privacy is technical architecture. At Mayfair IT, we have built data platforms handling sensitive information where the stakes are absolute. Citizens trust government with their data.  Breaching that trust destroys the entire relationship. But locking data away completely prevents the analysis that improves services. The challenge is sharing insights without sharing secrets. This requires privacy preserving pipelines built into the architecture, not added after the fact. How de identification pipelines actually work: Data enters the system with full identifying details.  Name, address, date of birth. Everything needed to link records to real people. The de identification pipeline processes this before analysts ever see it. Personal identifiers get replaced with pseudonyms. Granular location data gets aggregated to broader areas.  Rare combinations of attributes that could identify individuals get suppressed. What emerges is data rich enough for meaningful analysis but stripped of the ability to identify specific people. The technical complexity most organisations underestimate: → De identification is not a one time transformation, it is a continuous process as new data arrives. → Different analysis types require different privacy levels, so pipelines must support multiple outputs. → Re identification risk changes as external datasets become available, requiring constant threat modelling. → Audit trails must prove no analyst accessed identifying data without legitimate need. We have implemented these systems for programmes analysing geospatial patterns, health outcomes, and economic trends across millions of records. The platforms enable insights that improve public services whilst maintaining privacy standards that survive regulatory scrutiny. Engineering systems to treat data utility and privacy protection as non negotiable requirements solves the conflict entirely. The organisations that get this right unlock data value others leave trapped because they cannot guarantee privacy.     Every time we share data, we walk a tightrope between utility and privacy. I have seen how the desire to extract value from data can easily collide with the need to protect it. Yet this is not a zero-sum game. Advances in cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies are making it possible to reconcile these two goals in ways that were unthinkable just a few years ago. My infographic highlights six privacy-preserving techniques that are helping to reshape how we think about secure data sharing. From fully homomorphic encryption, which allows computations on encrypted data, to differential privacy, which injects noise into datasets to hide individual traces, each method reflects a different strategy to maintain control without losing analytical power. Others, like federated analysis and secure multiparty computation, show how collaboration can thrive even when data is never centralized or fully revealed. The underlying message is simple: privacy does not have to be an obstacle to innovation.     For years, travel has run on a quiet exchange that no one talked about. If you wanted convenience, you gave up control. Not intentionally. Not consciously. It just happened in the background. A profile duplicated itself. A document was stored somewhere you never saw. Systems synced and copied your details because that was the only way to make travel work at scale. And because the industry delivered a workable experience, most people accepted the trade. AI changes this! Not because it asks for more data, but because it reveals the cost of using the wrong data, in the wrong context, with the wrong assumptions. Hallucinations show you where context broke. Strange recommendations show you where consent was stretched. Compliance risk shows you where governance never existed. The old model collapses the moment systems start interpreting rather than executing. This is why permission is becoming the defining layer of travel. Permission is not a form or a toggle. It is a signal of trust. It tells a system when it is allowed to act and when it is not. The industry still assumes it can move data freely. That data lives in one place. That more sharing means better outcomes. That consent is something handled once, usually at the end of a legal page. None of this makes sense in an AI-driven world. We are shifting from data extraction to earned access. You see this shift across the ecosystem. International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s One ID. Solid’s personal data stores by Sir Tim Berners Lee And now Travlr ID, building a zero-copy, traveller-owned memory layer where the permission moves but the data does not. This is where the future is heading: Airlines earning permission to pre-fill forms. Hotels earning permission to understand accessibility needs. Corporate systems earning permission to verify compliance. Traveller agents granting access in real time, based on context, not assumptions. The winners of the next decade will not be the companies that hold the most data. They will be the ones trusted enough to access the data that never leaves the traveller. Clarity defines trust.     One day, every CTO will face a choice. The familiar safety of Traditional IAM  or the new architecture of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). And that decision will define the next decade of digital trust. IAM feels comfortable. It centralizes control. It’s predictable. But SSI challenges that comfort. It decentralizes control. It hands power back to users. And that shift is both unsettling and inevitable. Here’s what happens when you choose to rearchitect identity: 1- You redefine trust → Verification becomes decentralized. → Data moves from central databases to verifiable credentials. 2- You build privacy by design → Users decide what to share, when, and with whom. → Selective disclosure replaces overexposure. 3- You strengthen interoperability → SSI operates across platforms and jurisdictions. → Standards like W3C and DID Core make identity portable. 4- You eliminate single points of failure → No central vault means no central breach. → Trust exists across nodes, not within silos. 5- You evolve from control to consent → Ownership moves from organizations to individuals. → Data becomes a right, not a resource. And yes  it’s daunting. Migrating from IAM to SSI requires new protocols, new mindsets, and new models. But so did every major shift in computing history. The transition from mainframes to cloud looked impossible too. Now it’s standard. The same will happen here. When you stand at the edge of identity transformation, remember: Centralization feels safe  until it isn’t.     Many current public sector systems are built to acquire, copy, store, and process the same data. A citizen-centred model breaks this cycle. When a citizen carries trusted, verifiable facts about themselves, there’s no longer a need for all government systems to acquire and store and share and process the same personal data. System design is dramatically simplified. Security and privacy are improved. The focus shifts from complex data sharing arrangements to verifying the digital proof that citizens (or their authorised AI or human agents) themselves provide. It inverts the model, making citizens, not the state, the integration point: — government becomes an issuer of facts, not a central checker — individuals can directly prove their eligibility for a service — organisations become verifiers, not data processors — data stops being copied and starts being proven My look at how Verifiable Credentials *could* (!) invert current assumptions around data management, eligibility checking, and processing — and provide a genuinely citizen-centred approach to service design.
