  • You Want To Control Your Own Data? You Can't Handle Your Own Data! The CFPB's 1033 rule aims to empower consumers by granting them access to and control over their financial data. But that assumes that we have the knowledge, resources, and capacity to manage such complex responsibilities. This assumption is problematic for a number of reasons: 1️⃣ 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗽. Managing financial data involves understanding things like data security, third-party provider credentials, and consent agreements. But, as so many people here like to point out, we have a financial literacy (or illiteracy) problem in the US. Many consumers lack formal education in financial literacy or cybersecurity, making them vulnerable to exploitation or mismanagement of their data. 2️⃣ 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. Many consumers--particularly younger ones--interact with upward of a hundred financial providers. Constantly monitoring, authorizing, and renewing consent for multiple providers will create an unsustainable load for the average consumer. Revoking data access requires knowledge of the process and vigilance to ensure that 3rd parties no longer have the data. Many consumers simply won't spend the time to track these activities. 3️⃣ 𝗩𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀. Many consumers are unaware of how their data may be used once shared. PII isn't even needed anymore for marketers to accurately individual consumers. Providers could use data for purposes like targeted advertising or profiling, potentially violating consumer expectations. 4️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀. While there are some good tools available today, most consumers lack the resources to track and resolve data breach issues. Financial recovery, identity restoration, and credit monitoring require expertise and time that many consumers do not have. To address these challenges, the industry needs: ▶️ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. While 1033 rule requires the secure handling and sharing of consumer data, it doesn't include a formal certification process or licensing requirement. ▶️ 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Instead of placing the responsibility on consumers, FIs should implement security measures like automatic consent expiration and granular access settings. While Section 1033 aspires to give consumers control, it places an excessive burden on individuals to manage complex data-related responsibilities. Ironically, without additional safeguards and educational measures, the rule risks empowering only the most informed and resourced consumers, leaving others--i.e., those 1033 was designed to help the most--more, not less, vulnerable.

    Day 6 of MCP Security: How Does MCP Handle Data Privacy and Security? In MCPs, AI agents don’t just call APIs — they decide which APIs to call, what data to inject, and how to act across tools. But that introduces new privacy and security risks 👇 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗖𝗣𝘀? In traditional systems, data moves in defined flows: Frontend → API → Backend You know what’s shared, when, and with whom. 𝗜𝗻 𝗠𝗖𝗣𝘀:  • Context (PII, tokens, metadata) is injected at runtime  • The model decides what’s relevant  • The agent can store, reason over, and share user data autonomously  • Tool calls are invisible unless explicitly audited 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗖𝗣𝘀  1. Context Leakage: Memory and prompt history may persist across sessions, allowing PII to leak between users or flows.  2. Excessive Data Exposure: Agents may call APIs or tools with more data than needed, violating the principle of least privilege.  3. Unlogged Data Flows: Tool calls, prompt injections, and chained actions may bypass traditional logging, breaking auditability.  4. Consent Drift: A user consents to one action, but the agent infers and performs other actions based on the user's intent. That’s a privacy violation. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗠𝗖𝗣 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲: ✔️ Context Isolation Prevent data from crossing agent sessions or user boundaries without explicit logic. ✔️ Prompt-Level Redaction Strip sensitive data before it's passed into agent prompts. ✔️ Chain-Aware Access Controls Control not just what tool can be called, but how and when it’s called, especially for downstream flows. ✔️ Logging & Audit Trails for Reasoning Log not just API calls, but: Prompt inputs Tool decisions Context usage Response paths ✔️ Dynamic Consent Models Support user-level prompts that include consent logic, especially when agents make cross-domain decisions. In short: MCPs don’t just call APIs, they decide what data to use and how. If you’re not securing the context, the memory, and the tools, you’re not securing the system.

    The Most Valuable Layer in the Age of AI Isn’t Intelligence—It’s Data Controls Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella who's been closely working with OpenAI made this point recently in an interview with Bill Gurley and Brad Gerstner (link below) - that the new agentic apps will have access to too much data to do what they need to do, and our data controls embedded inside the last generation apps just won't apply. Here's what that means. Every company today is becoming a data company. Whether you’re running a healthcare platform, a commerce marketplace, a fintech app, or building the next generation of AI-native tools, you’re operating on sensitive customer data—PII, PHI, PCI, and more. But the way we handle that data hasn’t kept up. Legacy tools were built to protect data at rest or to stop it from leaking after the fact. DLP tools block it. Compliance checklists bury it. DSPMs discover it after it’s already somewhere it shouldn’t be. Meanwhile, the real world has changed: - AI models are pulling live customer data into prompts, logs, embeddings, and responses. - Regulations are multiplying and fragmenting—GDPR, HIPAA, DPDP, PIPL, LGPD. - Enterprise buyers are demanding not just “security,” but verifiable, architectural privacy controls. This is no longer a checkbox problem. It’s a design problem. What we need is a new layer of infrastructure—a data control layer—that lets us use sensitive data without exposing it. That’s what we’re building at Skyflow. Not as a bolt-on scanner or a governance dashboard, but as infrastructure: a zero-trust data vault that isolates sensitive data and enforces strict access controls, while still letting that data be used in search, analytics, ML, and AI workflows.   • The rapid deployment of artificial intelligence has outpaced the development of robust data governance frameworks, creating a dangerous gap between technological capability and institutional responsibility. This failure exposes individuals to unprecedented privacy violations and security breaches that existing regulatory structures are ill-equipped to address. The foundational problem lies in the inadequate definition and enforcement of data provenance standards. Most AI systems cannot reliably trace where their training data originated, whether consent was obtained, or if sensitive information was properly redacted. Companies frequently aggregate datasets from multiple sources without establishing clear ownership chains or audit trails. This opacity makes it impossible to verify whether personal information was collected lawfully or used within appropriate boundaries. Data minimization principles have been systematically abandoned in AI development. Rather than collecting only what is necessary, organizations harvest vast repositories of information under the assumption that more data improves model performance. This maximalist approach transforms every data point into a liability. The governance vacuum extends to inadequate access controls and insufficient accountability for misuse. Multiple employees across organizations can access sensitive training data without clear justification, logging requirements, or consequences for unauthorized use. Vendor relationships compound this problem—third parties involved in AI development often operate under minimal oversight and loose contractual obligations regarding data protection. Security failures are equally endemic. Many organizations implement AI systems without conducting thorough privacy impact assessments or maintaining current security infrastructure. Legacy systems run alongside AI applications, creating vulnerabilities that sophisticated attackers routinely exploit. The complexity of modern ML pipelines means security gaps frequently go undetected until after exploitation occurs. Perhaps most critically, data governance failures reflect a deeper accountability failure. When breaches happen, consequences are negligible. Fines remain modest relative to organizational budgets, executives face no personal liability, and individuals harmed receive minimal restitution. This absence of accountability creates perverse incentives favoring speed and capability over protection. Addressing these failures requires mandatory data inventories, strict minimization standards, meaningful consent frameworks, enhanced access controls, regular security audits, and consequential penalties for violations. Until organizations face real consequences for governance failures, and until individuals regain meaningful control over their information, AI systems will remain vessels for privacy violations and security breaches—threatening the very foundation of personal autonomy in an increasingly digital world.

    Working with data also means working with 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭!💯 As data analysts & scientists, we’re often among the first people to touch raw data, including 𝐏𝐈𝐈 (𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧) data such as email IDs, phone numbers, etc. What we do at that stage matters a lot. This responsibility shows up in small but critical decisions: - Do you really need names, phone numbers or email IDs or will aggregates do? - Should user-level data appear on dashboards or be masked and summarized? - Is this data meant to be exported or should it stay within controlled systems? In fact, most companies have 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 while accessing data. But few companies don't have strict policies and if you're working as an analyst there, giving up on privacy “𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘴” can be costly. Poor handling of PII doesn’t just break trust alone. It can lead to regulatory penalties, legal exposure and financial losses under regulations like Europe's 𝐆𝐃𝐏𝐑 and India’s 𝐃𝐏𝐃𝐏 𝐀𝐜𝐭. And in most cases, the risk isn’t created by bad/malicious intent. It’s created by casual decisions or taking it for granted mindset during analysis. Data protection at the analyst level isn’t just about policies. It’s about human judgment and restraint. Accurate insights do matter. But responsible handling of data is what protects both the user and the company. As data analysts, privacy doesn’t start with compliance teams. It starts with us!
