Be willing to pivot. 6. Health is Wealth Top performers prioritize sleep, exercise, and mental health. They know personal well-being fuels professional success. 7. Leverage Technology Use tools to automate repetitive tasks and streamline workflows. But don't let tech become a distraction. 8. Focus on Impact, Not Activity Busy ≠ Productive. “No time” is simply another way of saying “Not a priority” - Have you heard this one? Well, maybe we should stop guilt-tripping others with this statement. “Hold on, hold on Jevon, I’ve heard you say this one yourself too.” I know 😅😅 But look, I’ve been reflecting alot; The people who say they have no time… Things they say they have no time for… And something feels off. :::::: Which 9-6 employee doesn’t want to prioritize health, friends and family, interests, personal growth and passions? We want it all. And more. And maybe THAT is the problem. When there’s so much we want out of life, we don’t know HOW to prioritize. How much of my 24 hours a day do I spend sleeping? Working? Gaming? How do I decide? Analysis paralysis is very real - the overwhelm that comes from overthinking and over-analysing the situation. When that happens, we default to doing more of what we are already made to do. And in the case of 9-6 employees, that’s work. :::::: → The silver lining? There is a way through. Slightly more than a year ago, I was that person. Dissatisfied with my job, disengaged in everything I was doing, Perpetually seeking a new high that I never found, Yet fundamentally paralysed from seeking my priorities in life. Today, I have → Less anger → More positivity → A regular workout routine → A writing routine that excites me → Newfound appreciation for the workplace → A more deliberate relationship with family and kids Much of it, I attribute to a 3-step framework that served me well. Maybe it will help you too. Step 1: Awareness Do you even know what you want in life? In the next 1 year, or 5? Put pen to paper, write it down. Have that set up as a desktop background to remind ourselves from time to time. Often we get distracted from our goals when they are not top of mind. Step 2: Understand your energy What are the activities that energize us? Reading? Socializing? Learning something new? Working out? Volunteering? If you can’t find anything today, dig further into your memories. As a kid, did you enjoy a good book? A walk in the park? Find those activities, And PRIORITIZE them. When we prioritize and do what gives us energy, it fills our inner cup. When the inner cup overflows, we are then able to pour into all other aspects of work and life without feeling empty afterwards. Step 3: Set time and protect it When we identify the activities that give us energy, be intentional in setting time for it. “1/2 hour before work each day to read.” “An hour on a Sat morning to hit a workout.” Start small, but be consistent with the time set aside. Then, protect it by finding allies and advocates. Have your colleagues, friends and families be accountability partners. Share your goals with them, and allow them to protect it for you. :::::: The best part? When you start feeling good, you find energy to do more of what makes you feel good. Sometimes I look back at my time on active duty in the Air Force and wonder how I got everything done . . . how did I get kids to soccer, stay credible in the airplane, do laundry and grocery shopping, and focus on my role as a commander and leader. The reality is that there were often times throughout my career where I felt overwhelmed by multiple competing priorities . . . there just didn’t seem to be enough time in the day to get it all done. The only way I could keep my head above water was to get serious and deliberate about prioritizing. I didn’t always get this right (in fact, many times I did not), but here are a few ideas that can help you prioritize and make the most of your time: 1️⃣ Identify Your Goals/Priorities: Clearly define your objectives to focus on tasks that align with your priorities. 2️⃣ Prioritize Tasks: Conduct a thorough analysis of your daily tasks. Determine which tasks are urgent and important, and focus on completing those first. (I didn’t know about the Eisenhower Matrix then, but I find it highly effective now for prioritizing my tasks.) 3️⃣ Delegate Responsibilities: Trust others to handle tasks not directly related to your core responsibilities, freeing up time for priorities. 4️⃣ Set Realistic Deadlines: Break down larger tasks into smaller steps with achievable deadlines to maintain steady progress. Micro/quick wins are also nice. (I personally enjoy crossing items off of my to-do list.) 5️⃣ Learn to Say No: Be selective about new commitments to avoid overloading your schedule (sometimes easier said than done, and it’s helpful to have an accountability partner on this). 6️⃣ Block your Schedule: Consider setting aside specific blocks in your schedule for strategic thinking. Creating this space ensures that you are actively working toward your goals and objectives and not just getting bogged down in the weeds. 7️⃣ Review and Adjust: Regularly reassess your schedule and priorities to ensure they align with your goals, adjusting as needed. (I use a high-tech sticky note and review/re-write at the end of each day). Every morning, it's the same routine. The alarm blares, and instantly, you're mentally scrolling through your endless to-do list. Before the day has even started, you're already in overdrive. But let's hit pause for a moment. When was the last time you asked yourself, "WHY am I doing this?" The harsh reality is you've been trading your well-being for a hollow version of success that feels more like a prison than a reward. Imagine, for a moment, being 80 years old and reflecting on your life, only to realize...you never truly lived. That's the haunting cost of your relentless "too busy" mantra. Here's the good news: It's not too late to change the narrative. You can transform "I don't have time" to "I make time for what's important." Here's your blueprint for change: 1. 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. If you’re a programmer with a full-time job and a startup dream, time is your biggest enemy. You finish work exhausted, open your laptop with good intentions, and then... Nothing happens. Too many ideas. Too little time. I’ve been there. I used to jump between ten projects, convinced I just needed more hours. The truth? I didn’t need more time. I needed focus. Here’s how I finally learned to choose what to build each quarter, even with just 30 minutes to 2 hours a day. The Real Problem: Endless Options, Limited Energy AI tools make it easier than ever to start building, but they also make it easier to get lost. One day it’s an AI note app, the next it’s a productivity bot. You start fast, but never finish. Here’s why most side builders stall out: - They chase too many ideas. - They don’t define what “done” looks like. - They pick something exciting, not meaningful. - They don’t plan around their real life, fatigue, family, work. But clarity fixes all of that. Step 1: Brain Dump Everything List every idea, every feature, every dream. Don’t judge. Get it out of your head and onto paper. Then ask: If I could build only one thing in the next 12 weeks, what would have the biggest impact? Step 2: Pick One or Two Goals Use this filter: - Excitement: Would I still want to build this when I’m tired? - Impact: Will it move me closer to freedom or income? - Urgency: Can this wait another quarter? - Feasibility: Can I realistically complete this task in 12 weeks with 1 hour of work per day? For me, that meant: - Build an Insight Engine at my 9-5 job - Grow Sucana to 10–50 paid users - Grow my YouTube channel Step 3: Define Your Why and Plan for Blockers Your “why” keeps you coding when motivation fades. Your blockers, distractions, new tools, and long days. When you only have 1 hour a day, the right focus is everything. Because building your dream isn’t about finding time, it’s about choosing what deserves it.

Big Dreams, Small Steps By their very nature, big dreams can’t be achieved overnight. And that’s the danger because they feel so far away, it’s easy to delay action. One excuse after another creeps in: the market changed, priorities shifted, circumstances evolved. Eventually, the dream gets shelved. But big dreams aren’t built in one giant leap. They’re carved bit by bit, like a sculptor chiseling away at a block of stone. Each small strike matters. Without those near-term actions, the statue never takes shape. Here are three categories of near-term actions that lay the foundation for far-reaching dreams: Meaningful Progress – Take small, immediate steps toward your dream. Daily or weekly action creates momentum that postponement never will. Capacity Building – Invest in developing the skills, strengths, and competencies that will make achieving your dream easier over time. Relationship Investments – Build a broad, supportive network. Not everyone you help will reciprocate, but enough will, and often in surprising ways. Big dreams require patience, but they also require persistence. Keep chiseling.
