Most people separate hobby and business. High performers don’t. Would you be able to build this using old pallets that nobody wanted? The data tells a clear story: • A Harvard Business Review study found that leaders with serious hobbies show 25–30% higher job performance due to better stress management and decision-making • Deloitte reports that executives who engage in creative or technical hobbies are 2× more likely to drive innovation in their organizations • Athletes-turned-executives score 20% higher in resilience and execution discipline (McKinsey) • Companies led by founders with strong personal interests outside work show higher long-term retention and lower burnout rates Why? Because hobbies quietly train the same skills business demands: Strategic thinking under constraints Fast feedback loops Comfort with failure Long-term consistency In strategy, we call this low-risk experimentation. In life, we call it a hobby. Many great businesses didn’t start as businesses: • Coding → software companies • Gaming → systems thinking → AI strategy • PC building → infrastructure optimization • Sports → leadership under pressure The pattern is simple: Obsession first. Monetization later. If your life is only business, performance eventually collapses. If you build energy, curiosity, and mastery outside work—business compounds. Hobbies don’t steal time from success. They multiply it. #Leadership via @demunershow #Strategy #PersonalGrowth #BusinessMindset #Innovation #CareerDevelopment #HighPerformance

In complex times, it’s not just creativity that wins—it’s CREATIVITY x FOCUS. I once worked with a leader who was wildly creative. Every meeting was a brainstorm. Every brainstorm… well, sometimes more of a rabbit hole than an ideation session. Their team had intermittent successes. But as the market tightened and resources thinned, their team stalled. There were simply TOO MANY ideas. And not enough action. Contrast that with an innovation leader I recently coached. She had that same spark—but she anchored it in clarity. Clarity about her strategy. Clarity about her customer. And in turn, clarity about the value her idea could deliver. The result? Speed. Traction. And a team that felt energized, not overwhelmed. Because in complex environments, creativity without focus? It’s like drinking from a firehose. But focus amplifies creativity. It filters. Sharpens. Aligns. And that’s where real magic happens. Focus x Creativity = Velocity + Value Feeling the swirl right now? Try this: —> Get clear on your north star (your customer’s need AND your org’s core strategy). —> Use it to focus your next idea sprint or team brainstorm. —> Then watch creativity turn into meaningful progress—not just motion. What’s one way you stay focused when things get noisy? #innovation #focus #creativity #leadership #jugaad #doingbetterwithless #keynote

“Creativity is the new productivity.” — Bob Iger Most professionals are still optimizing for speed. While that worked in 2015, in 2026, AI can out-write, out-design, and out-produce most people. Even me. Speed is no longer what matters. Originality is. Output isn't your competitive advantage. Thinking differently is. Creativity isn't reserved for "the creatives." It's not a personality trait. It’s a trainable skill. 🙌🏻 I know this because I'm a trained graphic designer. I was TAUGHT creativity. That training opened doors for me into innovation. There’s substantial research showing specific behaviors reliably increase creative performance. I summarized 7 of the most practical ones on the whiteboard below: ⬇️ • Take a break so your unconscious mind keeps working (incubation effect) • Walk to increase idea volume and cognitive flexibility • Impose constraints to force non-obvious solutions • Seek novelty to disrupt routine thinking • Combine unrelated domains to spark breakthrough ideas • Pursue a hobby to fuel cross-domain insight • Ask “what-if” questions If you want to be more original, be intentional. In an AI-driven world, being busy won’t differentiate you. Being ORIGINAL will. If you had to commit to just one of the seven this week, which number would it be? ✍🏻 Comment below. ——— Found this helpful? Save & repost ♻️ to help someone in your network. Innovation is human. I teach the skills that power it.

🎯 What If Your Biggest Productivity Upgrade Isn’t Software — But a Hobby? 🧠⚙️🎨 📊 A 2024 study in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that professionals who actively engage in cognitively stimulating hobbies show 22–28% higher problem-solving performance at work. 🧠 Neuroscience research from King’s College London reveals that hobby-based learning activates the brain’s default mode network, increasing insight generation and mental clarity by up to 31% compared to task-only work cycles. 📈 A global workforce survey covering 8,000 knowledge workers showed that individuals with creative or technical hobbies report 41% lower burnout and 2.3× better cognitive recovery after high-pressure tasks. 💡 The science is clear: Your brain doesn’t sharpen under constant pressure.  It sharpens when curiosity takes the lead. ✨ When people pursue meaningful hobbies, something powerful happens: 🌈 Cognitive flexibility improves  ⚡ Abstract thinking accelerates  🧩 Systems thinking deepens  🧠 Mental fatigue drops  🚀 Insight generation increases Hobbies don’t distract the mind — they retrain it. 🔬 Researchers describe this as “constructive cognitive detachment” — stepping away from performance metrics while unknowingly upgrading the very thinking skills that drive performance. That’s why breakthroughs rarely appear in back-to-back meetings.  They emerge while building, tinkering, experimenting, or learning purely for the joy of it. 🌟 A hobby isn’t an escape from work. It’s a parallel training ground for better thinking.  Because clarity doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from giving the mind space to explore, connect, and play. 🌈✨ 🤔 Reflection worth sitting with: Are you optimizing your calendar…  or upgrading the way your brain actually works? Deloitte just added LEGO sets to their $1,000 annual well-being subsidy. So much for big consulting firms being where fun goes to die... Forget standing desks and meditation apps. Deloitte's taking a very different approach to workplace wellness: they're paying people to play. This is a genius move... Flow State: LEGO building can create what psychologists call "flow state"—that zone where time disappears and your brain operates at maximum efficiency. The challenge-to-skill ratio is perfectly adjustable (simple builds for beginners, 9,000-piece Titanic models for experts). Lego projects provide clear goals with immediate feedback. Flow experiences reduce stress, and they can also enhance cognitive flexibility and problem-solving abilities, things that transfer directly to work performance. Intrinsic Motivation: Corporate wellness program offerings can fail because they feel like work. Gym memberships, mindfulness apps, etc. are externally motivated for most of us. We do them not because we want to, but because we know we should. By subsidizing play, Deloitte is tapping into intrinsic motivation - a powerful driver of human behavior. Employees are actually eager to engage. Productivity: Research shows that professionals who regularly experience flow states demonstrate measurably improved performance across multiple dimensions. They show greater resilience when facing workplace pressure, enhanced creative problem-solving abilities, and sustained focus that carries over into their regular work tasks. They even report lower burnout rates and stronger organizational commitment. The internal chats are discussing things like $850 Millennium Falcon builds. (Presumably, less nerdy options, too!) Good for employee satisfaction, but also for cognitive restoration. LEGOs aren't the only thing Deloitte lets its people spend wellness money on. In addition to gym memberships and sleeping pillows, other options include puzzles, games, even Playstations.😮 (I'm not so sure about game consoles. Today's games are optimized to induce flow, but that also makes them hard to stop playing. An all-night Call of Duty session might not do much to enhance well-being the next day, much less productivity!) This is one business strategy that looks suspiciously like fun. Deloitte is betting nearly $200 million on well-being choices, including things like video games and plastic bricks - crazy, or crazy smart? What would YOU do with $1000 to spend on well-being? #FlowState #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplacePsychology #BusinessStrategy

Here's what keeps me up at night: We've convinced ourselves that creativity & data-driven performance are opponents in a zero-sum game. This might be the most expensive mistake in modern marketing. Think about it differently: What if creativity isn't the opposite of data-driven performance, but rather its rocket fuel? 🚀 The intersection of creativity & data unlocks 3 fundamental truths: 1. Creative Excellence Drives Performance: Strong creative doesn't just build brands – it transforms performance metrics. When we elevate creative quality we see measurable impacts: -> Higher CTR -> Lower CAC-> Reduced ad fatigue -> Improved conversion rates 2. Data Insights Fuel Creative Breakthroughs: The most powerful creative ideas aren't born in a vacuum. They emerge from deep customer understanding: -> Behavioral patterns reveal storytelling opportunities -> Performance data highlights what resonates -> Testing uncovers creative white space -> Analytics shape narrative evolution 3. Integration Creates Compound Effects: When creative & data teams work as one: Brand building becomes more efficient -> Performance marketing gets more distinctive -> Creative testing becomes continuous -> Innovation accelerates The magic happens when creativity & data work together: For Brands: ➡ Creative excellence builds memory structures ➡ Data insights shape creative direction ➡ Creative consistency amplifies performance ➡ Real-time optimization fuels innovation For Performance: ➡ Creative breakthrough cuts through ad fatigue ➡ Story-driven ads reduce CPC  ➡ Emotional resonance increases CTR ➡ Creative testing improves ROAS Data AND creativity show us: 📈 Story Drives Performance: The more distinctive & emotionally resonant our creative, the better our performance metrics become. It's about connecting in ways that drive action. 🚀 Testing Fuels Creativity: When we test creative systematically, we don't just optimize performance – we uncover new creative territories. Data becomes a source of creative inspiration. 💪 Consistency Compounds Impact: When we align creative excellence across brand & performance channels, each piece makes the others work harder. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Think about tomorrow: ➡ AI will enhance creativity, not replace it ➡ Real-time creative optimization becomes standard ➡ Performance signals will shape brand narratives ➡ Creative testing becomes continuous 🚀🚀The breakthrough comes from understanding that creativity isn't just about big brand moments – it's about finding novel solutions to performance challenges. Data isn't just about optimization – it's about inspiring creative breakthroughs.🚀🚀 For C-suite leaders, the mandate is clear: We must stop treating creativity & data as opposing forces. They're partners in the same dance, each making the other stronger. Who's ready to reimagine what's possible when creativity and data truly work as one? #MarketingStrategy #CreativeExcellence #PerformanceMarketing

💡 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 💡 True breakthroughs don’t come from pushing harder or doing more. They happen when you have the space to think deeply. Why do we equate busyness with productivity? And yet, how often do our best ideas come when we’re relaxed, taking a walk, showering, or not doing anything at all? Slowing down isn't about not working. It’s strategy. Back-to-back meetings, constant notifications, and endless task-switching can drain your energy and steal your focus. Real productivity is: ✨ Thinking smart, not working harder ✨ Creating, not reacting ✨ Protecting your energy, not draining it When your time is filled with reactive tasks and no space to think, your creativity suffers. To stay energized, you need to reclaim your time and protect your focus. Here are some tips: ✅ 𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂. Prioritize activities and people that bring you energy. ✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿. Block small breaks to recharge and carve out larger blocks for deep thinking. ✅ 𝗦𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. Guard your priorities by turning down tasks and commitments that don’t move you forward. ✅ 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁. Channel your best energy into what is most important to you personally & professionally. ✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆. Make time to recharge and create unstructured space for your best ideas to emerge. Creativity thrives on freedom, not pressure. When you allow space for your mind to wander, rest, and recharge, innovation happens and ideas flow effortlessly. So, ask yourself: ⚡ What problems could your mind solve if you stepped back? ⚡ What opportunities might appear if you allowed yourself to slow down?

Getting to the top or succeeding in a job requires 100% commitment and +60hr work weeks. Or at least that is often believed to be the recipe for career success. Evidence indicates that purely focusing on your job might not be the best approach. Long days at the office/work may seem to improve productivity but can lead to burnout and don’t necessarily improve your output.   Studies have shown that having a hobby unrelated to your job and dedicating time to it can help to improve your work and wellness. The hobby may consume some of the time you would have devoted to work but there are some obvious benefits: mental breaks and an opportunity to re-emergence. Studies have further shown that there are some less obvious benefits. Achieving something while engaged in a hobby or non-work-related activity provides a sense of success which improves confidence at work, promotes a positive mindset, and can improve performance at work.   My job requires long hours at a desk, technical conversations with people, and problem-solving. In my spare time, I don't mind spending time alone while building/fixing/renovating things around the house, getting out on the bicycle, or trying my hand at brewing beer. These activities re-energize me and allow me time to let my thoughts go. Surprisingly enough, these were instances when I resolved some technical problems that had evaded me during normal work hours.   Sometimes it is better to step away from the workplace, catch a breath, and know it is not time wasted. #worklifebalance #creativity #mentalhealthawareness

🌊 Ever been so focused on a task that time seemed to disappear? That’s flow, a state of deep engagement where work feels effortless, creativity thrives, and stress fades into the background. In my class this week, we’re getting deep into the fascinating study of Flow State and I’d love to share about it with you! Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defined flow as the sweet spot between challenge and skill, where we’re fully immersed, making progress, and feeling energized—not drained. It’s that moment when: ✔️ A task is challenging enough to excite you, but not so hard that it’s frustrating. ✔️ You know exactly what you're working toward. ✔️ You get immediate feedback that keeps you motivated. 💡 Why does this matter for mental health in the workplace? In today’s world of constant notifications, distractions, and burnout, deep focus is harder to achieve—but more valuable than ever. Research from Dr. Gloria Mark in 2023 shows that our ability to focus is declining—that the average worker is interrupted every 3 minutes, and it takes 23 minutes to refocus after an interruption. I think we can all relate to this; am I right? Meanwhile, attention spans have dropped by nearly 50% over the last two decades! Flow isn’t just about productivity; it’s about wellbeing. When employees experience flow regularly, they report: ✅ Lower stress and anxiety ✅ Greater job satisfaction ✅ Higher creativity and engagement So, how do we design workplaces that foster flow instead of distraction? Here are a few ideas: 🔹 Encourage deep work time—limit unnecessary meetings and interruptions. 🔹 Align tasks with strengths—help employees find work that challenges but doesn’t overwhelm them. 🔹 Give clear goals & feedback—so people stay engaged and see progress. ✨ In a world filled with distractions, flow is the key to both high performance and happiness at work. How do you create flow in your workday?

Research ALERT!!! For decades, corporate culture has quietly reinforced the idea that seriousness equals competence. If you want to be taken seriously, you tone it down. You tighten up. You remove the color, the humor, the experimentation. But research CONTINUES to tell a different story. A recent study highlighted in an article by Mireia Las Heras found that employees who intentionally bring playfulness into their work not only perform better, they experience better health, stronger relationships, and greater overall well-being. Even more interesting, that playful mindset spills over into their personal lives, creating a cycle of renewed energy that flows back into work. This is not about gamifying everything. It is not about forced team-building exercises or mandatory fun. It is about playful work design. Playful work design is the proactive choice to approach tasks with curiosity, challenge, and creativity. It is reframing routine work so it becomes engaging rather than draining. It is injecting experimentation instead of perfectionism. It is allowing humor to coexist with high standards. When we do this, we activate powerful neurochemistry. Dopamine supports motivation. Norepinephrine sharpens focus. Endorphins buffer stress. These are not soft outcomes. They directly support productivity, innovation, and resilience. We also know from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s research on flow that optimal performance happens when challenge and skill are balanced and the work feels intrinsically rewarding. Play is one of the most accessible pathways into that state. Here is the leadership takeaway: Playfulness is not the opposite of seriousness. It is the opposite of rigidity. Leaders who model curiosity, flexibility, and lightness create teams that are more adaptable, more innovative, and more willing to take intelligent risks. They build psychological safety without sacrificing accountability. If you want more engaged teams, you do not need more pressure. You need more ownership. More experimentation. More permission to approach work as something we participate in, not just endure. Play is not a luxury. It is a strategic advantage. What would change in your team if “be serious” stopped being the default? #LetsPlay #PlayfulWorkDesign
