    Digital Systems and the SDGs 🌎 Digital infrastructure plays a growing role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. It enables new forms of data-driven decision-making, cross-sector efficiency, and real-time monitoring. Its integration into core systems—agriculture, health, energy, governance—is increasingly fundamental, but not without complexity. Precision agriculture uses drone imagery, AI forecasting, and sensor networks to optimize inputs and reduce losses. These systems improve productivity and resource efficiency but also introduce risks related to data ownership, scalability in low-connectivity zones, and long-term maintenance requirements. In public health, platform-based models accelerate vaccine development and distribution. Digital health records, logistics tools, and analytics platforms improve coordination. Still, challenges persist around data privacy, interoperability, and uneven infrastructure across regions. Education technology platforms expand access to content, skills, and certification. When designed for offline use and local relevance, they increase reach. Without these adaptations, they risk reinforcing disparities in digital access, language, and curriculum alignment. Smart grids, predictive maintenance systems, and IoT integration support low-carbon energy transitions. These solutions require high-quality connectivity and materials with environmental costs. Deployment should account for embodied emissions and responsible sourcing. Circular economy strategies rely on blockchain, traceability tools, and product passports to close material loops. While these systems improve transparency and compliance, they depend on energy-intensive infrastructure and require governance to ensure data integrity and accessibility. In urban planning and governance, real-time data platforms and digital services can improve mobility, public service delivery, and institutional performance. Implementation must address algorithmic bias, cybersecurity, and platform lock-in risks. This overview does not fully reflect the broader implications of artificial intelligence. As AI becomes more integrated across sectors, its impact on labor, decision autonomy, environmental footprint, and ethical governance will be critical areas to assess.     21 April 2026: In "The Hill," Isaac F. and I warn that "The Pentagon Could Be About to Make a $55 Billion Mistake." - We note that the huge financial commitment in the budget request to unmanned and autonomous systems with the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group is overdue and should be applauded, but the investment could be undermined by three shortcomings seen at times in the past when new hardware has been introduced. - First, no joint U.S. military concept or doctrine yet exists for the scaled employment of autonomous formations — units that can coordinate at machine speed and execute a commander’s intent when communications are degraded or severed. - Second, there are not yet plans for the considerable organizational changes and the fundamentally different form of command that will be required (we also don't yet see that with the introduction of greater numbers of unmanned systems). Substantial force structure changes will need to be made, and leaders will need extensive training and education on how the new capabilities will be employed. Commanders will, in particular, need to learn how to encode intent in advance — translating objectives, constraints, and priorities into parameters that machines can execute independently. But current training and education pipelines are not yet aligned to produce leaders capable of commanding the anticipated autonomous formations at scale. - Third, there is not yet a system for continuous iteration and rapid feedback that autonomous systems will require. Ukraine’s success with unmanned systems, for example, stems not from any single platform, but from the battle management system that enables it and the rapid feedback loop between operators, engineers, and commanders. The U.S. cannot replicate Ukraine’s model exactly, but it will need to build an equivalent system — one that translates operational experience into adaptation at speed. At present, the U.S. system is not remotely comparable to that established by the Ukrainian military. - In fact, Ukrainian forces — along with their Russian adversaries — are redefining the very nature of warfare on the ground, at sea, and in the air, both over the battlefield and deep within each country’s interior. They have already made sweeping changes in their operational concepts, force structure, training and development of leaders, and feedback loops that drive continuous adaptation. - The U.S. has not yet made similar changes to reflect the lessons already being learned in Ukraine with remotely piloted systems. The result is a widening gap — not in technology, but in the ability to employ new technology as part of a coherent and evolving way of war. - And the advent of truly autonomous systems and formations (and, eventually, systems of autonomous systems) will represent even greater changes to warfare than what we are seeing in Ukraine. #ukraine #DAWG #linkedintopvoices

    #Swarm of micro flying #drones #robots in the wild. This approach evolves aerial robotics in three aspects: capability of cluttered environment navigation, extensibility to diverse task requirements, and coordination as a swarm without external facilities. #Aerial #robots are widely deployed, but highly cluttered environments such as dense forests remain inaccessible to drones and even more so to swarms of drones. In these scenarios, previously unknown surroundings and narrow corridors combined with requirements of swarm coordination can create challenges. To enable swarm navigation in the wild, we develop miniature but fully autonomous drones with a trajectory planner that can function in a timely and accurate manner based on limited information from onboard sensors. The planning problem satisfies various task requirements including flight efficiency, obstacle avoidance, and inter-robot collision avoidance, dynamical feasibility, swarm coordination, and so on, thus realizing an extensible planner. Furthermore, the proposed planner deforms trajectory shapes and adjusts time allocation synchronously based on spatial-temporal joint optimization. A high-quality trajectory thus can be obtained after exhaustively exploiting the solution space within only a few milliseconds, even in the most constrained environment. The planner is finally integrated into the developed palm-sized swarm platform with onboard perception, localization, and control. Benchmark comparisons validate the superior performance of the planner in trajectory quality and computing time.     How do you train ML models when your users are offline 60% of the time? Everyone's celebrating Where Is My Train's ₹320 crore Google acquisition. But let me break down the ML problem nobody's talking about: The Constraint... 100M+ Indian train travelers with: - Spotty 2G networks - No GPS indoors - Battery anxiety - Zero tolerance for data drain Most AI founders would quit here. But the Sigmoid Labs team built something genius. Here's their data strategy I reverse-engineered: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 (𝗚𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲) The founder manually collected GPS + cell tower logs during train trips. He gave friends a data-logging APK and asked them to run it on Chennai/Delhi routes. Result?  They compressed all of India's rail-route cell tower data into just 7-8 MB. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗚𝗣𝗦) The app uses cell tower IDs to predict location without internet or GPS.  Why this matters: Cell towers consume 90% less battery than GPS. For trains (500m long), accuracy of a few kilometers is enough. They discovered cell tower IDs were static and highly accurate near railway stations. 𝟯. 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗟 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 - Pre-trained models run entirely on-device - SQLite stores entire Indian Railways timetable locally - ML models predict ETA using historical delay patterns - Updates sync only when internet is available 𝟰. 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 When you're working with incomplete signals and intermittent connectivity, you need: - Kalman filtering for noisy location data - Transfer learning from historical railway datasets - Active learning to prioritize which data points matter 𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗮𝘁: 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 Google didn't buy them for the UI. They bought: - Years of real-time location data across India - Travel pattern intelligence - A data pipeline that works in the world's toughest network conditions 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘐 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴: ❌ Stop optimizing F1 scores in your Jupyter notebook ✅ Start optimizing for real-world constraints Most "AI products" fail because founders chase: - The latest LLM - 99.9% accuracy - Cloud-heavy architectures Where Is My Train succeeded with simple ML that worked on ₹5000 phones with 2G networks. Your model architecture doesn't matter if: - It needs constant internet - It drains battery in 2 hours - It requires 5GB of storage - It can't handle sparse data This is the bitter truth about production ML:  Solving distribution problems > Solving model problems What constraints are you optimizing for in your AI products?     We're all familiar with the bag of words (BoW) approach commonly used in natural language processing to represent text as an unordered collection of words. But did you know that researchers have now extended this concept to 3D point clouds for real-time loop closure detection in LiDAR-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)? In a recent robotics class, I learned about BoW3D, an innovative bag of words framework tailored for 3D LiDAR point clouds. The core idea behind BoW3D is to construct the vocabulary using LinK3D, an efficient and pose-invariant 3D point cloud descriptor that facilitates precise point-to-point matching. By representing the 3D features as words in a vocabulary and indexing them using a hash table, BoW3D enables quick retrieval of previously visited locations. The true potential of BoW3D becomes apparent when it is integrated into a LiDAR odometry system. It not only efficiently detects loop closures but also calculates the complete 6-DoF pose transformation between the current and matched historical scans in real-time. This loop correction serves as a vital constraint for pose graph optimization, helping to minimize drift and ensure global consistency. Rigorous testing on the KITTI dataset has shown that BoW3D surpasses state-of-the-art methods in both place recognition accuracy and computational efficiency. With an impressive average processing time of a mere 48ms per scan, BoW3D exhibits significant potential for enabling robust, large-scale 3D mapping in real-world scenarios. As 3D sensors become more and more common in robotics and autonomous systems, being able to detect loop closures and correct drift in real-time is going to be absolutely essential. That's why I'm so excited about BoW3D. Learning about this framework in class has really sparked my curiosity, and I can't wait to see how it evolves and shapes the future of 3D perception. :)

    I really hope AVs paired with on-demand services take off in Singapore soon to solve the first and last mile problems. AVs can also significantly shift the time of use of goods vehicles. They can run at night when roads are empty. This will decrease traffic congestion during the day. "These routes can be changed as needed, with self-driving minibuses and shuttles taking people to transport nodes during peak hours, and then places such as polyclinics or community centres during off-peak times." "Mr Siow’s priority is to reduce public transport journey times to work, especially for estates farther from the city centre, such as Tengah, Punggol, Jurong West and Pasir Ris. He wants to do so by making HDB estates more walkable and increasing the density of bus networks – plans that he shared during an earlier doorstop interview in his Brickland ward in Chua Chu Kang GRC. However, introducing new bus services is not straightforward, he noted. Bus drivers need to be recruited and trained, which can take six months to a year, Mr Siow said. There is also a need to buy buses and build depots and interchanges. “All of us want... more bus services, more frequent buses. But behind every bus, there are two, two and a half, maybe more bus drivers, and it’s just very difficult to get,” he added. The authorities had also considered minibus services, but the maths did not work out when a driver was added to the equation, Mr Siow said. This is where smaller autonomous vehicles will make a difference, he noted. The deployment of driverless vehicles will help reduce the time it takes for people to get from their homes to the MRT station or bus interchange – the so-called first and last mile – which Mr Siow said is not so efficient today. This is a key reason why public transit travel times can be two to three times longer than a private car ride in some cases. Mr Siow aims to halve that gap. Reducing public transport travel times to the city will create a virtuous circle, he said. “Once you do that, the demand for private transport would be more balanced... public transport would be more viable and attractive, and we should put our focus on that.” Calling self-driving technology a “game changer”, Mr Siow said that if autonomous vehicles become a reality here, the dynamics of driving could shift considerably. “It may make less sense for you to drive your own car,” he added. The authorities in Singapore began studying self-driving vehicles as early as 2014. A number of trials were done, but none made significant inroads. But as the technology matures in places like China, a second wind has emerged.     Transportation is the largest employment sector on Earth. Over 1 billion people globally work in roles directly tied to moving people or goods, drivers, operators, couriers, logistics staff. That industry is now facing a seismic shift. At Viva Technology #Paris, I got a hands-on look at Tesla’s new Robotaxi a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals, and no driver seat. Just sensors, AI, and minimalism. Here’s what we know: • Tesla plans to unveil the production version on August 8, 2025 • Initial manufacturing is already underway in Texas • Pricing aims to undercut public transport, not just Uber • It will operate via Tesla’s own ride-hailing app • First cities targeted: Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles • No human driver — full autonomy powered by Tesla's FSD and Dojo AI stack • Global expansion dependent on regulatory approval and real-world test data Tesla isn’t alone. • Waymo (Alphabet) is running autonomous taxis in Phoenix and San Francisco • Cruise (GM) is paused after safety issues but plans to return • Baidu, Inc. and AutoX are already live in parts of China • Uber partnered with Waymo, but their core model faces existential risk The implications are massive: • Driving is the most common job in 29 US states • Millions of Uber, truck, and taxi drivers globally could be replaced • Cities may need to rethink urban infrastructure, licensing, and labor support • Investors will shift focus to platform owners, not fleet operators We’re not talking about a decade from now.     Are self-driving buses in Singapore a “step forward”? Starting in mid-2026, this execution of new age public transport marks an exciting step toward integrating autonomous technology into everyday life. It’s a compelling example of how innovation can reshape public infrastructure, blending cutting-edge technology with practical needs. But beyond the technology itself, the key here is adaptability. Self-driving buses have the potential to reduce traffic congestion, cut down on emissions, and offer seamless, 24/7 public transport solutions. They could also bring significant changes in job roles within the transportation sector, emphasising the need for retraining and upskilling in the workforce. But as promising as this sounds, challenges remain. Safety, infrastructure adaptation, public acceptance, and regulatory frameworks are all critical factors that will determine the success of this initiative. The introduction of autonomous buses in a city as densely populated as Singapore will be a telling test of whether these vehicles can truly integrate into complex urban environments. The journey toward full autonomous automation is complex, with real-world testing essential to understanding and overcoming the hurdles that still exist.
