I still have to pause when I say this out loud…
I was featured in ESSENCE Magazine — yes, that publication — talking about holiday spending, debt, and protecting your budget this Christmas 🎄✨ This was the result of countless pitches over the last year, staying consistent, and believing that real, practical money conversations belong on big platforms. And the topic? One that matters. Last year:
• 36% of Americans took on holiday debt
• Averaging $1,181 in new balances
• Mostly on credit cards (65%) and store cards (24%)
• Parents with young kids were hit the hardest — nearly 48% went into debt
• Followed closely by Millennials and Gen X That’s not because people are “bad with money.”
It’s because the holidays are loud — sales, pressure, family expectations, and social media hauls that make overspending feel normal. In the article, I share how to:
✔️ Treat credit like a short-term tool — not long-term debt
✔️ Know your cash flow before you swipe
✔️ Avoid holiday traps like deferred interest and “spend more to save” deals
✔️ Use sinking funds, separate accounts, or gift cards to stay in line
✔️ Budget for the entire holiday experience — not just gifts Because using credit is fine — letting it sit and compound is what gets expensive. This feature is bigger than me. It’s about helping people enjoy the holidays without starting January in recovery mode. Go read the article.
Protect your joy and your budget.
And if you’re moving through this season doing the best you can — you’re still doing amazing. 💛 Link in the comments! Dassit. #personalfinance #budget #holiday

🛍️ Mastering the Art of Savvy Shopping: How to Outsmart Retailer Tricks and Cognitive Biases During the Festive Season 🎁 As we gear up for the festive season, it's easy to fall into the shopping frenzy and overspending traps laid out by retailers. But fear not, there are ways to navigate this consumer jungle and make the most of sales without emptying your pockets. 🎉 1. Set a Budget: The foundation of wise shopping is having a budget in place. Determine how much you can afford to spend during the festivities and stick to it. This is your financial North Star. 2. Make a Shopping List: Create a list of what you truly need, be it gifts, decorations, or food. This will keep you focused and prevent impulsive purchases. 3. Research Prices: A little research goes a long way. Before you hit the stores or start browsing online, make sure you know the typical prices of the items on your list. 4. Compare Prices: Don't jump at the first "sale" sign you see. Compare prices from different retailers and websites to ensure you're getting the best deal. 5. Use Cash or Debit: Consider leaving the credit cards at home. Paying with cash or a debit card ensures you only spend what you have. 6. Set Time Limits: Keep your shopping time in check. The longer you shop, the more likely you are to overspend. 7. Beware of Cognitive Biases: Understanding cognitive biases, such as the anchoring effect and the bandwagon effect, can help you make more rational choices. 8. Avoid Scarcity Tactics: Phrases like "limited time offer" or "only a few left" are designed to make you act quickly. Take your time to think it over. 9. Delay Gratification: If you're tempted by an impulse buy, wait 24 hours. Chances are, you'll find it was just a passing desire. 10. Stay Informed: Subscribe to deal-alert websites and follow retailers on social media. Being informed about upcoming discounts can help you plan your purchases. Let's make this festive season a time of joy without the regret of overspending. Share these tips with your friends and family, and together, we can enjoy the celebrations without breaking the bank. #FestiveSeasonShopping #SmartSpending #FinancialWellness #RetailTherapy

A 10-point Ramadan budgeting checklist by Sh. Joe Bradford, CSAA 1. Make a Plan: List all Ramadan expenses—meals, zakat, Eid, decorations, worship materials—using past spending as a guide. 2. Obligations First: Prioritize paying your daily prayers as personal practice, and make Zakat your number one financial move in the month. After that, work on the things below. 3. Cut Non-Essentials: Eliminate unnecessary spending to align with your goals. Take what you were spending on lunches and coffee and save it. 4. Balance Funds: Match estimated expenses with available funds and adjust as needed. It's easy to spend too much because you're not eating. Less is more. 5. Health & Nutrition: Budget for nutritious meals and hydration. You can't worship your best if you're sick or bloated. 6. Work & Worship: Adjust budget for any changes in work schedules and worship activities. Track what you are not spending on, and think about giving it as Sadaqa instead. 7. Spiritual Growth: Allocate funds for educational and spiritual resources. Classes, donations, and volunteering are areas to focus on. 8. Charity: Plan for zakat and additional charitable contributions. If you've never budgeted before, Ramadan is a good time to start. 9. Eid Celebrations: Include Eid gifts, clothes, and meals in your budget. Make sure to make it an enjoyable day for you and your family. It's ok to spend more for enjoyment on Eid. 10. Track & Adjust: Monitor spending and adjust the budget to cover all needs. Your budget needs to be a living thing, adjusting to your life. Keep it all in a spreadsheet to use next year. During Ramadan, use your focus on money to boost your spirituality, community, and well-being. #Islam #Ramadan #FinancialLiteracy #Budgeting

गणेश चतुर्थीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा! 🌺 Ever wondered how Lord Ganesh's wisdom can guide us in managing our finances, especially during festival seasons? Now, I'll tell you the art of budgeting & drawing parallels, between the two worlds of festivity and personal finance. Ever heard this one before? 🙏🏽🥳 "𝗚𝗮𝗻𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶 𝗕𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗮, 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗮! 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮, 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗿 𝗗𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮!" 🙏🏽🥳 When we plan for Ganesh Chaturthi, we set a budget, right? We know how much to spend on decorations, sweets, and festivities without breaking the bank. Similarly, In personal finance, budgeting is the key to financial harmony. So, how can we apply this to our everyday lives? 1️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀:  ↳ Just as we plan rituals and offerings for Lord Ganesh, define your financial goals.  ↳ Whether it's buying a new home, saving for your child's education, or that dream vacation, clarity on your goals is the foundation of effective budgeting. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁:  ↳ Just like making a list of items needed for the festival, list your monthly expenses.  ↳ Allocate funds accordingly to essentials (groceries, bills), savings, and discretionary spending. 3️⃣ 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆:  ↳ Distribute your budget wisely.  ↳ Allocate more to essential expenses and savings while being mindful of your discretionary spending, much like we allocate funds for deity idols and offerings. 4️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁:  ↳ After Ganesh Chaturthi, we assess our expenses, right?  ↳ Similarly, review your budget regularly, adjust it when necessary to stay on track with your financial goals. 5️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘁:  ↳ Just as we seek Lord Ganesh's blessings, don't seek financial blessings through debt.  ↳ Avoid impulsive purchases and stick to your budget. Remember, debt-free living leads to financial freedom. 🪙 When you budget effectively, you'll find harmony in your financial life, just as Lord Ganesh brings harmony to our homes. 🪙 Let's celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with devotion and financial wisdom! Big Festival Sales are already here. And with them, the ₹1 lakh crore spending spree too!! Amazon's Great Indian Festival 2024 saw 1.4 billion customer visits, while Flipkart recorded 7.2 billion customer engagement visits, generating over ₹99,600 crores in sales. But here's the reality: 1 in 4 electronics purchases were made using EMIs, with 60% of purchases being impulse buys. That’s how these festive offers trap you: "25%, 50% or 75% off" feels like saving money. But the truth is, discounts trick you into spending more, and you end up increasing your spending budget. 📍Here's how you can benefit from these offers without going overboard: 1. List what you actually need for the next 6 months. And stick to it. Set a strict budget (max 10% of monthly income) 2. Compare pre-sale prices (many items are marked up before "discounts") Never exceed 15% of monthly income on all EMIs 3. Avoid EMIs for wants vs needs. Sales & offers are designed to make you spend more. Don’t fall into these traps. Always remember this approach before overspending: Only buy what you NEED and avoid what you WANT. That’s how you become financially smart, not a fool. P.S. What’s your strategy to stick to your budget this festive season? Follow Rahul Patel for more insights on smart spending and wealth building. ✅

Q4 comes with pressure. More demand. More movement. More spending. Overwhelming seasonal businesses with orders and deliveries to meet up with…. But do you know the real reason many SMEs feel overwhelmed and disorganized during this season? They jump into holiday promotions/sales without a micro-budget. They guess. They assume. They “go with the flow.” And that’s exactly how Q4 becomes chaotic. Too many businesses are about to launch their December sales/offer today being the 1st but before you do so, Set this up in 1 minute: 1. Create a 30-day micro-budget for the season. A small, focused budget that tells your money exactly where to go. It’s simple to do - just stay with me… 2. Group your spending for the season into clear classes: E.g Class 1. Inventory – What will you need more of? Class 2. Staff – Who will support you during rush periods? Class 3. Ads & Marketing – How will you drive visibility? Class 4. Logistics & Delivery – How will you move products/services faster? Now, put expected amounts beside each one. Then, subtract it from your available cash. If it won’t fit, adjust, but please don’t guess. 3. Finally, it’s important you do this NOW. Right before you announce any holiday promo, sales, or campaign. Not during. Not after. But before. You know why? A micro-budget keeps you disciplined, calm, and profitable when everyone else is panicking. In summary, it is very important for every SME to build a simple, realistic budgeting system for this season. ♻️ Repost so other SMEs in your network can learn. Hey folks! 👋 Planning the "holiday" party can feel like a lot of pressure. You're trying to plan one event that everyone on your team will actually enjoy. But here’s the good news: that party is one of your single biggest opportunities to build community, show appreciation, and create a truly inclusive culture. The secret? Shift the why. You’re not planning a "holiday party." You’re designing a "people appreciation event". This simple change moves your event from a social obligation to a powerful tool for recognition and retention.   Here are three ways to get started: 1. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. How you talk about the party sets the tone. Ditch the "Company Christmas Party" title and try a non-denominational name: ❆ End-of-Year Celebration ❆ Employee Gratitude Event   ❆ The (Your Company Name) End-of-Year Bash 2. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞. You can be festive without leaning on decor from one specific tradition. A "Winter Wonderland" theme with snowflakes, snowmen, and twinkling lights is a classic for a reason. Or get cozy with a "Hygge" theme (think soft lighting and warm vibes) to encourage conversation.   3. 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐮 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 (this is a big one!). Food is one of the most powerful tools for belonging. Your menu needs to accommodate all dietary needs: ❅ Religious restrictions (e.g., kosher, halal)   ❅ Allergies (e.g., nut, dairy)   ❅ Personal choices (e.g., vegan) ❅ Festive non-alcoholic options! (Not just soda and water)   𝐏𝐫𝐨-𝐭𝐢𝐩: Publish the menu in advance and invite feedback. This simple act of psychological safety means your team members can arrive confident and ready to have fun, knowing their needs were anticipated and respected.   #EmployeeExperience #CompanyCulture #EventPlanning #Inclusion #HR

Budgeting for a Stress-Free Holiday Season As professionals, it's important to approach the holiday season with a strategic mindset and budget wisely to ensure a stress-free experience. One key piece of advice is to set clear financial goals before the holiday season begins. Take the time to determine how much you are willing and able to spend on gifts, decorations, food, travel, and other holiday-related expenses. By having a well-defined budget, you can make informed decisions and avoid overspending. Prioritizing your spending is another crucial aspect of budgeting for the holidays. Consider the values and traditions that are important to you and allocate your funds accordingly. By focusing on what truly matters to you, you can avoid unnecessary expenses and ensure that your spending aligns with your priorities. The holiday season is filled with tempting sales and promotions, but it's crucial to resist the urge to make impulsive purchases. Stick to your budget and carefully evaluate each potential purchase. Take the time to compare prices, consider alternatives, and ask yourself if the item aligns with your priorities and budget. Lastly, remember to embrace the spirit of giving. The holiday season is not just about material gifts, but also about giving back and spreading joy. Consider volunteering your time or donating to charitable causes that align with your professional values. Engaging in acts of kindness can bring a sense of fulfillment and make a positive impact on others. By approaching the holiday season with a strategic mindset and budgeting wisely, you can enjoy a stress-free experience while maintaining your financial well-being. Remember, it's not about the amount of money spent, but the meaningful connections and experiences that truly matter during this special time of year. #budgeting #financialwellness #professionaladvice #holidayseason
