And now, so are the regulators. Here’s what 2026-ready companies are expected to do (but 90% still haven’t): 01. State-wise Risk Mapping is now a compliance expectation. 82% of malware volume came from just 6 Indian states. But the fastest-growing threat zones were Tier-2: Punjab, Odisha, Assam. Regulators now want geo-behavioral segmentation, and not just IP logs. 02. Proof of real-time detection, not just dashboards. In sectors like BFSI and energy, response time is now being scrutinised. Can you prove your system reacts in seconds, not hours? 2026 audits will ask: “Show me what your XDR did the last time your East zone flagged an anomaly.” 03. Sector-specific threat coverage: not optional anymore. Pharma, power grids, BFSI, healthcare, they’re all being hit differently. A generic firewall rule isn’t compliance. Mapping sector threat intel to your stack is now a regulatory demand, not a suggestion. 04. The death of checkbox compliance. 68% of compromised orgs in 2025 were “fully compliant”. When I started as a SOC Analyst, I thought the job was all about me, my SIEM, and my alerts. But I quickly realized: Even the best detection is useless if no one understands what I’m saying. If the IT team doesn’t get my request, they won’t isolate the machine. If leadership doesn’t understand the risk, they won’t support action. If developers don’t see the threat, they’ll push vulnerable code again. Here’s how I started building better communication skills — and how it changed everything: 1. Translate Technical to Practical Instead of: “We detected TTPs consistent with MITRE ATT&CK T1059 via base64-encoded PowerShell.” I now say: “We found someone trying to run malicious PowerShell on a user machine. It could lead to ransomware. We blocked it.” Simple. Clear. No jargon. 2. Listen Before You Send I used to send long, technical emails — assuming the other team would read and respond. Now, I ask: “What does the IT team care about?” (Steps to fix) “What does management care about?” (Business risk, cost) Tailoring your message is respect. 3. Speak Their Language For IT: Use system names, impact, urgency For Leadership: Talk risk, reputation, compliance For DevOps: Focus on secure coding and CI/CD integration 4. Document Your Ask Clearly I learned to write tickets or emails like this: What happened What I need from them Deadline or urgency Contact if they have questions This clarity saves time — and builds trust. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published its initial draft of "Mapping Relationships Between Documentary Standards, Regulations, Frameworks, and Guidelines: Developing Cybersecurity and Privacy Concept Mappings (IR 8477)," open for public comment until Oct 26, 2023. This document describes #NIST's approach for identifying and documenting the relationships between concepts such as #controls, requirements, recommendations, outcomes, #technologies, functions, processes, techniques, roles, and skills. By following this approach and establishing a single concept system that links #cybersecurity and #privacy concepts from many sources into a cohesive and consistent set of relationship mappings within the NIST Cybersecurity and Privacy Reference Tool (#CPRT), companies could answer difficult and time consuming questions like: • How does conforming to one standard help the organization conform to another standard? • What parts of the second standard does the first standard fail to address? • Where can we find more information on how to satisfy a particular requirement in a guideline? • What types of technologies can we use, and what types of skills do the implementers need to have? • If we want to conform to a particular standard, what types of #cyber capabilities do our technology product and service providers need to support? • If we perform a particular #security assessment methodology, what requirements will be sufficiently validated across our #compliance portfolio? • What recommendations substantially changed from a guideline’s previous version to its current version? • What privacy and #securitycontrols must be in place before we adopt a new technology? This proposed approach to cybersecurity and privacy concept mapping aims to guide companies in understanding how the elements of diverse cybersecurity and privacy #standards, regulations, #frameworks, guidelines, and other content are related to each other.

Risk Assessment. Risk assessment is “The process of quantifying the probability of a risk occurring and its likely impact on the project”. It is often undertaken, at least initially, on a qualitative basis by which I mean the use of a subjective method of assessment rather than a numerical or stochastic (probablistic) method. Such methods seek to assess risk to determine severity or exposure, recording the results in a probability and impact grid or ‘risk assessment matrix'. The infographic provides one example which usefully visually communicates the assessment to the project team and interested parties. Probability may be assessed using labels such as: Rare, unlikely, possible, likely and almost certain; whilst impact considered using labels: Insignificant, minor, medium, major and severe. Each label is assigned a ‘scale value’ or score with the values chosen to align with the risk appetite of the project and sponsoring organisation. The product of the scale values (i.e. probability x impact) resulting in a ranking index for each risk. Thresholds should be established early in the life cycle of the project for risk acceptance and risk escalation to aid decision-making and establish effetive governance principles. Risk assessment matrices are useful in the initial assessment of risk, providing a quick prioritisation of the project’s risk environment. It does not, however, give a full analysis of risk exposure that would be accomplished by quantitative risk analysis methods. Quantitative risk analysis may be defined as: “The estimation of numerical values of the probability and impact of risks on a project usually using actual or estimated values, known relationships between values, modelling, arithmetical and/or statistical techniques”. Quantitative methods assign a numerical value (e.g. 60%) to the probability of the risk occurring, where possible based on a verifiable data source. Impact is considered by means of more than one deterministic value (using at least 3-point estimation techniques) applying a distribution (uniform, normal or skewed) across the impact values. Quantitative risk methods provide a means of understanding how risk and uncertainty affect a project’s objectives and a view of its full risk exposure. It can also provide an assessment of the probability of achieving the planned schedule and cost estimate as well as a range of possible out-turns, helping to inform the provision of contingency reserves and time buffers. #projectmanagement #businesschange #roadmap

NATO recently sounded the alarm over Russia's potential to disrupt Western infrastructure, particularly undersea internet cables and GPS systems. The article highlights that over 95% of international communications rely on these cables, meaning any disruption could have catastrophic consequences for military and civilian operations. To counter these threats, disaggregated operations provide a tactical solution that ensures resilience and operational continuity. This approach decentralizes critical military functions, enabling units to operate independently while maintaining horizontal communication with other units. Some specifics: We distribute C2 functions across mobile platforms, such as vehicles or portable containers, to avoid disruptions. These mobile units are designed for quick deployment, adaptability, and autonomous operation. We rely on SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Networking) to maintain communication between these mobile C2 units. By leveraging SD-WAN, we use multiple communication paths and dynamically route data to ensure secure and resilient connectivity, even when traditional networks fail. We deploy microservices across multiple nodes instead of relying on centralized servers. This decentralized approach enhances system resilience, ensuring critical services stay operational even under attack. We position compute nodes closer to the front lines to enhance resilience and reduce latency. These edge nodes process data locally, enabling faster decision-making and action. Coupled with SD-WAN, we ensure efficient data processing and communication, even in disconnected environments. We implement mesh networks, supported by SD-WAN, to provide a flexible and robust alternative when traditional hierarchical communication fails. This allows units to communicate directly with each other, maintaining operational coherence even when cut off from higher headquarters. As operations grow more complex, we ensure seamless communication between different units and allied forces. SD-WAN manages diverse communication channels, keeping these networks interoperable and effective across various platforms and nationalities. Inspired by HIMARS's "shoot and scoot" tactics, we design mobile C2, compute, and network nodes for high mobility and quick redeployment. This mobility allows us to avoid detection and targeting by adversaries while continually adapting to the battlefield's dynamic nature. We combine the mobility of these units with SD-WAN’s ability to maintain communication, enabling dynamic operations. This allows us to relocate quickly and re-establish connections to stay ahead of the enemy. We implement radium-based internal timing systems in environments where GPS is jammed or unreliable. These systems provide precise timing independent of external GPS signals, ensuring that operations can continue seamlessly despite attempts to disrupt navigation and synchronization. Instead of talking about vulnerabilities and patches, I spoke their language. Money. Here's the framework that changed everything: Revenue at Risk: I calculated our average deal size ($25K) and showed how a data breach could kill 6 months of new sales. Suddenly $50K seemed small. Regulatory Reality: I researched actual fines in our industry. $2.8M average for companies our size. The room got quiet. Competitive Edge: I showed how security certifications help close deals 40% faster. Security wasn't just protection anymore. It was sales acceleration. The breakthrough was ranking risks by financial impact, not technical severity. High: Customer data exposure ($2M+ liability) Medium: Internal system downtime ($10K/hour) Low: Non-critical server vulnerabilities ($500 fix) I also included recovery costs they never considered: - Legal fees - Customer notification requirements - Lost productivity during incident response - Reputation management The biggest challenge? Getting executives to think in probabilities, not absolutes. I used simple terms: "This isn't about IF we'll face a cyberattack. Industry data shows companies our size face attempts monthly. This is about WHEN and how prepared we'll be." Result? Full budget approval in two weeks. Plus an additional $25K for proactive measures. Stop speaking tech. Start speaking business impact. The instinctive answer is: “Enough to stay safe.” But what does “enough” actually mean? Here’s what the data shows. Average cybersecurity spend as % of IT budget: 🏦 Financial Services: 10-15% ⚕️ Healthcare: 8-12% 🛒 Retail: 7-10% 🏭 Manufacturing: 6-10% 🏛️ Government: 9-14% When you translate that into overall revenue, most companies invest between 0.3% and 0.9% of revenue on cybersecurity. But here's the critical insight that the best leaders understand: 🔥 There is NO direct correlation between higher spending and fewer breaches. High-profile victims often had massive security budgets. The real issue wasn't the size of the check; it was the strategy behind it. So, how do you right-size your investment? Shift the focus from spending to risk. Some frameworks to think about: ✅ Risk-based spending: Tie security investments to the financial exposure of key risks (e.g., ransomware downtime, regulatory fines, data theft). ✅ Industry posture: Critical infrastructure, finance, and healthcare face inherently higher threat levels, and attackers know it. ✅ Company size and maturity: A startup with 50 employees does not need the same security budget as a global bank. But both face existential risks if a breach hits. ✅ Cost of inaction: IBM estimates the global average cost of a data breach at $4.45M in 2023. For U.S. companies, the average jumps to $9.48M. This re-frames the entire conversation. The real question for the boardroom isn't "How much should we spend?" It's "How much risk are we willing to accept?" 💡 A simple formula for the boardroom: Cyber spend = (Potential Loss Exposure – Risk Transfer via Insurance) × Risk Appetite One thing is clear: 💥 Under-funding cybersecurity is not a cost-saving measure.
