    🆕 Out now: new issue of “#Evaluation, the International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice” (50% = open access = 📖) ☝ ‘As readers of this journal will know, we do not publish evaluation studies unless these illustrate advances in evaluation theory, methodology and practice.’ As ever, our dear Editor, Elliot Stern, opens his Editorial most engagingly. But he is right: several articles do just that. It is no coincidence that several were first presented at the European Evaluation Society (EES) conference held in #Rimini, Italy in September 2024. 🙂 1️⃣ In “Capturing the emergence of change in complex systems: The ‘Atawhai’ study in Aotearoa/New Zealand” (📖), Claire Gear, PhD and colleagues build upon the rich and growing body of knowledge of how to do justice to #complexity and #indigenous #knowledge in evaluation. The authors describe three methods used to evaluate change from the perspective of the Atawhai research participants: pre/post-readiness #surveys, social #network #analysis and qualitative exit #interviews.   2️⃣ Next, in “Digital-era evaluation: Automating and reconfiguring evaluation in the social service sector” (📖), Elizabeth-Rose Ahearn, PhD and Cameron Parsell focus on how the #institutionalization of evaluation is shaped by expectations around #governance, #managerialism and #accountability and the influence of digital transformations and digital governance. 3️⃣ The article by Giel Ton, “Methodological bricolage, data pattern detection and realist explanation: A portfolio analysis of inclusive business support” (📖), shows how a #realist #portfolio #analysis was operationalised as part of an evaluation of a donor-funded development programme. Herein, the #realist #evaluation #question ‘What works, for whom, under what conditions, and why’ formed the key learning question. What follows is a ‘methodological bricolage of variable-based regressions, case-based truth table analyses, reflection workshops and case study interviews’ to detect possible casual factors and learn lessons. 4️⃣ Another realist evaluation article, “Testing mechanisms using large-N qualitative comparative analysis in realistic evaluations” by Esben Højmark demonstrates how qualitative comparative analysis can be used to test mechanisms using #large-N survey data (large-N qualitative comparative analysis); not by itself, but as part of realistic evaluation. 5️⃣ #Context plays the leading role in the intriguingly titled “The forgotten contexts of evaluation” (📖) by Benjamin Harris, Lyn Alderman and Jessica Staheli. The authors aim to increase the practical and pragmatic guidance for evaluators on how to locate and determine what is contextually relevant. 6️⃣ Finally, “Working with interviews in Process Tracing evaluation methods” by Gabriela Camacho @Garland, Derek Beach and Dr. Johannes Schmitt, provides practical guidelines for using interviews in Process Tracing evaluation methods.
