Corporate training often feels like throwing seeds onto concrete. We mandate attendance, deliver information in a single format, and expect immediate growth. For neurodivergent professionals, standardized assessments rarely measure actual competency. They simply measure the ability to take a standardized test. Dr. Kirkpatrick developed a renowned model to evaluate training across four sequential levels: Reaction, Learning, Behavior, and Results. It is a brilliant clinical framework. But if we want it to work for a neurodiverse ecosystem, we must change how we measure growth at every level. Here are 10 neuro-inclusive ways to assess learning, mapped to the Kirkpatrick Model: 1/ Pre-Learning Reality: Live information dumps overwhelm working memory. Practice: Send reading materials 48 hours early so participants can process at their own pace. 2/ Advance Inquiry Reality: Spontaneous Q&A triggers anxiety and limits participation. Practice: Allow the team to submit questions anonymously before the live session. 3/ Regulation Pauses (Level 1) Reality: Long blocks of forced attention drain executive function. Practice: Mandate five minute biological processing breaks every 45 minutes to stretch, stim, or regulate. 4/ Multi Modal Anchors (Level 2) Reality: Auditory lectures fail visual and kinesthetic learners. Practice: Provide options. Let them watch a live demonstration, read a case study, or review a video. 5/ Structured Breakouts (Level 2) Reality: Unstructured group work creates heavy social ambiguity. Practice: Provide a strict, written rubric for peer roleplay so expectations are perfectly clear. 6/ Collaborative Polling (Level 2) Reality: Timed, silent quizzes spike cortisol and block recall. Practice: Use live polls or collaborative quizzes where small groups talk out answers before submitting. 7/ Flexible Demonstration (Level 2) Reality: Written tests do not equal practical mastery. Practice: Let employees choose to prove competency via a written summary, audio reflection, or practical demonstration. 8/ Implementation Maps (Level 3) Reality: Information without a plan quickly withers. Practice: Give participants time at the end to write down exactly how they plan to apply the new skill. 9/ Supervisor Support (Level 3) Reality: Managers often do not know how to support new habits. Practice: Provide supervisors with exact questions to check on the new skill without micromanaging. 10/ Reverse Cultivation (Level 4) Reality: We often train for skills the current environment does not support. Practice: Define the final organizational result first. Work backward to ensure the ecosystem allows that new behavior to survive. We must stop blaming the individual when the system is too rigid. I've always believed that assessment is the unlock for systemic education transformation. What you measure IS what matters. Healthcare was transformed by a diagnostic revolution and now we are about to enter a golden era of AI-powered diagnostics in education. BUT we have to figure out WHAT we are assessing! Ulrich Boser's article in Forbes points the way for math: rather than assessing right answer vs wrong answer, assessments can now drill down to the core misconceptions in a matter of 8-12 questions. Instead of educators teaching the curriculum or "to standards" we now have tools that allow them teach to and resolve foundational misunderstandings of the core building blocks of math. When a student misses an algebra question is it due to algebraic math skills or is it multiplying and dividing fractions? Now we will know! Leading the charge is |= Eedi - they have mapped millions of data points across thousands of questions to build the predictive model that can adaptively diagnose misconceptions (basically each question learns from the last question), and then Eedi suggests activities for the educator or tutor to do with the student to address that misconception. This is the same kind of big data strategy used by Duolingo, the leading adaptive language learning platform. It's exciting to see these theoretical breakthroughs applied in real classrooms with real students! Next time we should talk about the assessment breakthroughs happening in other subjects. What if tests could actually help students learn? The sciences of learning and measurement gives us a blueprint to redesign assessments as powerful learning experiences. OECD researchers Natalie Foster and Mario Piacentini have identified five core design principles to close the gap between instruction and assessment. Each principle makes assessment as much about learning as measuring. First, include extended performance tasks that mirror real-world challenges. Instead of quick drills, students work on tasks that foster deeper understanding and practical skills. Second, account for students’ prior knowledge when designing tasks. Building on what students already know makes assessments fairer and more meaningful. Third, allow productive failure. Let students struggle with new problems before giving answers—this approach reveals their thought process and leads to deeper understanding. Fourth, provide feedback and support during tasks. When students get hints or guidance as they work, they stay engaged and we gain insight into how they learn. Fifth, use low-floor, high-ceiling task design. Everyone can start easily, and advanced students are still challenged—painting a fuller picture of each learner’s abilities. For our future and learners everywhere, these innovations are vital now. The education gap between rich and poor schools has never been wider. But one solution is finally fixing this inequality. Here's how: By spring 2022, students fell behind by half a year in math and one-third of a year in reading. But here's what's even more troubling is the impact hits different communities unequally. Students in high-poverty districts lost 70% of a grade level in math and 42% in reading. Meanwhile, wealthy districts only dropped 30% and 10%. But what if I told you we've found a solution that works for everyone? Enter adaptive learning technology—a complete reimagining of education. Instead of forcing every child to learn the same way at the same pace, these tools analyze each student's unique learning patterns and then create personalized paths that transform how children learn. Math problems that adapt to their interests, like sports statistics for the baseball fan. Content can shift to match their learning style. Students get extra support exactly when they need it, until they master each concept. I've witnessed this transformation in our own schools. Using AI-powered adaptive tools to compress 6 hours of learning into just 2. And students aren't just learning—they're thriving. Because this technology removes every barrier to learning. It doesn't care about income levels or ZIP codes. Past struggles don't matter. It simply meets each child exactly where they are, ready to help them grow. In our Brownsville, Texas school, we serve two distinct groups. Half of our students come from SpaceX families. The other half come from families in the under-resourced local school district. With personalized support for every student both achieve the SAME remarkable outcomes. Our system spots learning gaps instantly and adjusts in real time. Local students soared from the 31st percentile to the 86th percentile in just ONE year—including kids with English as a second language. It's not just catching up—it's leaping ahead. Every child brings something unique to the classroom. Interests, learning styles, and natural strengths all differ. Now, finally, we have technology that honors these differences. Those who once dreaded school now race to learn. And teachers? They're being liberated to do what they do best: Guide self-driven learners and nurture curiosity. They come alongside kids to build essential life skills and support emotional growth. We're raising a generation of self-driven learners and critical thinkers who believe in their own unlimited potential. But our traditional education system resists change. It clings to outdated methods, even while: • Only 1/3 of kids read at grade level • Student stress reaches record highs • Teacher burnout continues to climb It's up to us parents, students, and educators to say we want something different. Over the past couple of decades, there have been plenty of rigorous evaluations of small-scale interventions. But (how) can they be implemented at scale? Karthik Muralidharan and Abhijeet Singh answer this in the context of personalized adaptive learning software, #mindspark. Inspired by their initial study with 314 treatment students, which found the software to be highly effective in increasing student learning, they adapted the delivery of the intervention through the public schooling system of Rajasthan to work within the regular schooling. They evaluated this scalable model with about 6,500 treatment students in 40 schools. The results are equally impressive! 1️⃣ After 18 months, math and language test scores improved significantly (by about 0.2 standard deviations, slightly smaller than the original study). 2️⃣ Gains were similar for male and female students, and for students with different socioeconomic status. Weaker students gained as much as stronger students. While stronger students improved on more difficult questions, weaker students gained on easier question. 3️⃣ But no improvements in school exam scores... This is a great example of how to respond to the criticism of whether evaluated interventions are scalable: (re)design them to perform scale and evaluate at scale!
