The notion that a "perfect" career in life sciences follows the rigid path of B.Sc. - M.Sc. - Ph.D. - Postdoc - Academic Professor is not just outdated – it's limiting your potential. As life science professionals, we possess a unique set of skills that extend far beyond the laboratory. Our analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and deep understanding of complex systems are invaluable across numerous industries. Consider this: You can drive innovation in biotech without running experiments daily. You can shape science policy without writing academic papers. You can lead product development in pharma without being tied to a bench. Are you truly leaving science behind by choosing these paths? Absolutely not. You're still: Interpreting scientific data, just in different contexts Communicating complex ideas, just to varied audiences Solving critical problems, just on a broader scale It's time to recognize that your worth isn't defined by your proximity to a pipette. Your value lies in your ability to apply scientific thinking to real-world challenges. Embrace the multitude of career options available to you. Your life science background is not a constraint – it's a launchpad for a fulfilling career aligned with your personal aspirations. Remember: You're not abandoning science by exploring diverse career paths. You're expanding its reach and impact. ... #LifeScienceCareers #careers #gethired #sciencejobs #beyondacademia #buildyourcareer

Is your diverse background actually your superpower? The old rules of specialization are dead. For 18 years, I had a fairly linear career pathway, until 8 years ago when I took a career break. During my break, I worked with many (retrenched) professionals who struggled to return to the workforce. Their challenge wasn't a lack of expertise, but rather the missing dexterity and breadth of skills needed to apply themselves in new contexts. That changed my perspective completely. When I returned to corporate life 15 months later, I deliberately sought opportunities to build trans-disciplinary skills, build new networks and stepping across traditional boundaries. Today, this diverse toolkit allows me to operate at the intersection of coaching, AI, and marketing – connecting dots that specialists often miss. If you've ever wondered whether your varied interests and skills were a liability rather than an asset, this article will change your perspective. The future belongs to polymaths. Feeling Stuck in Your Career? It Could Be a Competency Gap! 🚀 A few years ago, I worked with a team member, who was frustrated about being stuck in his role. He was technically skilled but couldn't figure out why promotions were passing him by. 💥That’s when we turned to competency mapping. 🔍 Together, we identified the key skills his position and future roles required—things like communication, leadership, and strategic thinking—which are critical competencies for growth. While he excelled in technical work, his communication skills needed refinement to step into leadership. By aligning his personal development with these competencies, we created a clear roadmap for his growth. Within a year, he sharpened his communication skills and was promoted to Team Lead. Competencies aren't just about what you’re good at now, but what you need to master for future success. Think of them as the blueprint for your career development. 💡 Key Competencies You Should Focus On: 💢Technical Expertise: Mastering the core skills required for your current role. 💢Communication: Expressing ideas clearly and collaborating with teams. 💢Leadership: Guiding teams and driving performance. 💢Strategic Thinking: Seeing the big picture and aligning with long-term goals. 💢Collaboration: Problem-solving and creating synergy within teams. 🔑 Key Action Points: 🖊️Identify the competencies needed for your next career step. 🖊️Compare your current skills with those required competencies. 🖊️Develop a plan to close any gaps through learning and experience. Feeling blocked in your career? It might be time to assess your competencies and create a growth plan. 📝 Start mapping your competencies today and take the first step toward unlocking your potential! #CareerGrowth #Leadership #CompetencyMapping #PersonalDevelopment #LifelongLearning #SkillDevelopment #LeadershipSkills #CommunicationSkills #ProfessionalGrowth

If I Was 25 Again and Wanted a Career in Renewable Energy… If I could rewind time and give my 25-year-old self advice before entering renewable energy, this is what I’d say: 1️⃣ Don’t chase titles. Chase exposure. Your first years should be about learning EPC, O&M, grid, permits, and banking, not business cards. 2️⃣ Technical skill gets you hired. Communication gets you promoted. The best engineers don’t always become leaders. The best communicators do. 3️⃣ Learn the full lifecycle, not just your job description. Design. Construction. Commissioning. O&M. Asset Management. Understanding the full picture makes you dangerous (in a good way). 4️⃣ Renewable energy is not just about solar panels, it’s about risk. Contracts, safety, compliance, communities, finances, politics. If you can manage risk, you will never be unemployed. 5️⃣ Find mentors. But also learn from broken projects. Success is inspiring. Failure is the real teacher. 6️⃣ Protect your reputation like it’s your company. In this industry, your name travels faster than your CV. 7️⃣ Your body is also an asset. Look after it. Burnout is real in project environments. If you collapse, the project doesn’t stop, it replaces you. 8️⃣ Global exposure will change your mindset forever. Different countries, different grids, different rules, one global standard: execution matters. 9️⃣ Money will come later, skills must come first. Chase competence before compensation. 🔟 And finally… remember why you started. Clean energy is not a trend. It’s responsibility. If you’re 25 and just starting your energy career, You’re in the right industry at the right time. And if you’re already in it… You know this journey is anything but easy, but it’s worth it. 👇 What would YOU tell your 25-year-old self?

This gap is reshaping what the future of work looks like. Between 2020 and 2024, global green talent grew by 27 percent, while India grew even faster at 32 percent. Green job postings on LinkedIn increased by 22 percent last year. Sectors like renewable energy and construction now show 40 percent higher demand for green skilled professionals, and finance and consulting have seen a 26 percent surge in ESG and sustainability related roles. Sustainability is no longer a specialised domain. It is becoming a foundational capability across industries. In Asia Pacific, where green upskilling demand is rising the fastest worldwide, India is among the top markets where the gap between green skills demand and supply is widening at the quickest pace. Most people think career diversity is career suicide. They're wrong. Single-path careers are the real risk. Emily Jones Joanisse proves it. Programmer. DJ. Nonprofit founder. 2008 crisis killed her Italian tech job. She didn't panic. She had options. Here's how she built a bulletproof career: 1. Build Skills That Travel Anywhere Emily learned programming young. Wrote scripts for her physicist father. Studied computer science. Worked across countries. Crisis hit. Job gone. She pivoted to teaching tech to children. Same core skill. Different stage. Americans change jobs 12 times by age 55 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Portable skills survive. Specialized roles don't. Your move: What skills transfer anywhere? 2. Keep Your Creative Lane Alive Emily started DJing during her degree. Not a side hustle. A second identity. Canada to Europe. Milan hotel residencies. "It gave me community, confidence, and connection." She built networks her programming job never could. Creative paths open different doors. One-third of Americans ages 25-44 completely changed fields since their first job (edX survey). Your move: What creative outlet could become more? 3. Combine Your Lanes for Unique Impact 2018: Emily co-founded Connected Canadians. Free tech support for seniors. "I saw older adults struggle with digital tools." Teaching experience + programming background = solution nobody else saw. Your intersections create value competitors can't copy. Your move: What problems only your combination can solve? 4. Start Your Second Path Before You Need It Don't wait for the layoffs. Emily built DJing alongside programming. Each path supported the other. When tech crashed, music kept her afloat. When gigs were slow, coding paid the bills. 83% of workers now prioritize work-life balance over pay (High5Test research). They want options. Not just paychecks. Your move: Start exploring while you have security. Range is resilience. Multiple paths don't dilute your career. They bulletproof it. ♻️ Share this with someone stuck in one lane 🔔 Follow Kabir Sehgal for more

AI isn't just displacing jobs - it's creating entirely new career categories and professional opportunities that didn't exist even five years ago. While many fear automation, strategic professionals recognize this as the emergence of whole new industries. AI might transform current roles, but it's simultaneously generating fresh career paths requiring uniquely human capabilities. Roles like AI prompt engineers, automation strategists, and human-AI collaboration specialists are being created faster than they can be filled. These positions combine technical understanding with creative problem-solving and relationship management. The key is positioning yourself at the intersection of AI capabilities and human expertise. The professionals who thrive will be those who learn to work with AI rather than against it. This isn't about job replacement - it's about job evolution and creation on a scale we haven't seen since the internet boom. Early-career sustainability jobs aren’t always “in” sustainability… and that’s okay 🌱 Some of the most impactful sustainability and social impact work I’ve seen hasn’t sat in a sustainability team at all. It’s happened in roles like: ➡️operations ➡️HR and people teams ➡️communications ➡️procurement Early in your career, these roles can give you something else that’s really valuable: Context 😊. You learn how organisations really work, how different functions operate, and how to speak the language needed to embed sustainability goals effectively. So if you’re building a career in sustainability or social impact, don’t underestimate the value of crossfunctional experience. It often lays the strongest foundations for longer-term impact! Which function do you think has the most un-tapped influence? #SustainabilityJobs #MeaningfulWork #SocialImpact #CareerDevelopment #EarlyCareer

We wrote an South China Morning Post SCMP letter to emphasize important points for students and early-career professionals, along with Qihan Geng and Thibaud Voïta, Ph.D. 🛢️ Fossil fuels still hold power in many regions. Yet despite the noise, our energy system and the world are shifting. 👉 Last year, renewable energies created 8.4 million jobs while fossil fuels lost 2.7 million. 👉 Asia represents two-thirds of global clean energy jobs, with China accounting for 46%, totaling 7.4 million people! The sector demands a broad and growing workforce beyond engineering roles. 1️⃣ Energy transitions unfold through vast industrial ecosystems, contributing to job creation in areas like program management, marketing, and business development. 2️⃣ There are opportunities in roles not directly related to projects. In China, over 450 A-share listed companies, accounting for 51% of market capitalization, must follow new sustainability reporting guidelines set by the Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing stock exchanges. Evolving regulations are fueling demand for ESG and compliance professionals, with growing opportunities for analysts, advisors, and sustainability officers. To take advantage of these opportunities: 👉 A technical background helps, but it’s no longer the barrier it once was. Industry-specific certifications and basic familiarity with emerging technologies can go a long way. 👉 People remain at the center of the transition, and soft skills like communication, adaptability, and collaboration are best developed through real-world experience (internships, volunteering, freelance projects). 👉 The sector, once male-dominated, is becoming more inclusive in terms of gender and professional background. 🔑 Energy transitions offer growth potential. To succeed, proactive career strategies are essential. Career opportunities are defined by unconventional moves such as reskilling and upskilling! 📍 For these reasons, we created the new MSc - Management of Energy Transitions. Link below for more info! A job searcher wanted to transition into a high-impact data role. However, they faced a clear gap between their current skill set and the industry requirements. While they had foundational knowledge, they struggled with: - Structuring their learning, - Managing their time efficiently, - And aligning their skill development with real-world expectations. They needed a clear and actionable roadmap to bridge the gap between their existing knowledge and their career aspirations. The key challenges included: ⭕ Lack of a structured approach to developing essential meta and technical skills. ⭕ Inefficient time, energy, and emotional management, leading to inconsistent progress. ⭕ Basic SQL knowledge that needed to be advanced to handle industry-level data tasks. ⭕ Uncertainty about how to build and showcase industry-relevant projects. We implemented a 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: 1) Meta skills roadmap - Focused on time, energy, and emotional management to improve consistency and productivity. - Established daily habits for structured learning and self-discipline. - Set up a progress tracking system to measure growth and make necessary adjustments. 2) Tech skills roadmap (if the client had extensive experience, we skipped foundational steps): - Advanced SQL development: Structured learning plan to move from intermediate to advanced proficiency. - Project-based learning: Focused on building projects aligned with real-world scenarios. - Industry-level exposure: Integrated collaboration with tech leads, stakeholders, and project managers. 3) Building industry-ready projects - Developed industry-level projects showcasing problem-solving skills. - Engaged in paid freelancing to gain real-world experience. - Collaborated with a tech lead, stakeholders, and a project manager to simulate real job conditions. Key Takeaways: -> Having a roadmap makes it easier to stay focused and track progress. -> Managing time and energy is just as important as technical skills. -> Daily habits lead to long-term success. -> Real-world projects help build confidence and credibility. -> Working with a team improves collaboration and problem-solving skills. By following a structured Meta and Tech Skills Roadmap, The job searcher effectively bridged the skill gap and positioned themselves for high-value career opportunities.
