The Wild Robot, Roz
Last week, I watched a kids' movie with my children. My daughter had her eye on a different movie; however, my son was set on watching this one. Ultimately, it was the only movie available, so we went with it.
As we stood up from our seats at the end, my daughter sighed and said, "I thought kids' movies would be boring, but after watching this, I could connect with the story. There was one part where I was almost crying with Roz."
My son chimed in, "He was really strong!"
"No, Roz was a she," my daughter insisted.
No, he argued, adding his twist to Roz's character.
The story takes place on a remote island, where Roz, a robot, unexpectedly arrives after her ship crashes during a storm. Her purpose as a robot is initially unclear, but her mission quickly shifts to survival and adapting to her new surroundings. Over time, Roz learns to communicate with the island's animals, who are at first wary of her. As she spends more time on the island, Roz’s purpose evolves from simple survival to nurturing and protecting the wildlife around her, especially when she becomes a mother figure to an orphaned gosling.
As Roz explores, she starts asking every creature she encounters, "Is there anything I need to assist with?"

At first, the animals are puzzled. A cranky raccoon mutters, “Unless you can get rid of my cousin who keeps stealing my berries, then no, thank you.” A squirrel responds with a twitchy tail, “You could help me find the acorn I buried... last autumn!” And a wise old owl finally replies, “Help? Hmm... perhaps you could assist me in... counting the stars tonight.”
Despite these puzzling and quirky responses, Roz takes each suggestion seriously. Her willingness to help, even with the oddest of tasks, slowly earns her a place among the animals. Her journey of forming connections, building trust, and creating a sense of family transforms her role on the island.
The Wild Robot is a wonderful story that introduces kids to the qualities of leadership, teaching them about empathy, dedication, focus, teamwork, unity, care, and resilience. Roz exemplifies leadership by staying focused on her mission, even as challenges arise. She shows children the importance of purpose and dedication—sticking to responsibilities, even when the path is tough.
Roz’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the island’s animals. This teamwork shows children that leaders don’t work alone; they rely on and respect their team. And even when things don’t go her way, Roz perseveres. Although she ultimately leaves the island, her impact stays in the hearts and minds of the animals, reflecting an essential leadership lesson: inspire others and leave a lasting, positive legacy.
I would love to share this story on this special Children’s Day. Let’s raise leaders for the future to be the front-runners in building a better world.
