Draft Legislation for Eircodes
Positive news emanating from the Daíl regarding the roll-out of Eircodes. A Department of Communications press release states that the Government has acted quickly to draft data protection legislation for Eircodes, Ireland’s new postcode system, as per the guidance of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
This news is particularly satisfying as it will now provide clarity on the issue of Irish postcodes and data protection. We can now all start to work towards the launch date of Eircodes, secure that data concerns are being addressed by government action.
Gamma sees this announcement as another milestone achieved for the Irish postcodes project. Organisations who wish to implement Eircodes can now focus on getting full use of the new system, which will allow them to achieve distribution and mailing efficiencies and engage with address level data analytics and big data mining.
We look forward to seeing the finer detail and wording of the legislation so that we can fully assess it and see what impact it might have on the data landscape in Ireland.
