Shivi Kapil - Founder of Empathy Design Labs

Her journey to code a change started in 2015 when she participated in a fellowship program called SIIP, launched by BIRAC. The program required her to travel across India for 6 months to observe and identify problems in the field of the theme — Maternal Child Care. She covered locations from tribal to rural, suburban to urban and talked to obstetricians, nurses, ASHA workers, pregnant women and even their family members. During this journey, she met women who were suffering from depression associated with their stillbirths. After interacting with them, her heart and mind believed in only one thing, ‘I can do it. I can build a solution to prevent the risk of stillbirths’. And thus, the idea ‘Kriya’ was born under Empathy Design Labs founded by her. Kriya is an IOT and AI-enabled solution that has been built as a vision to provide a companion for pregnant women. It is a non-invasive and wearable pregnancy monitor for daily monitoring of pregnancy health. The primary purpose of the device is to detect abnormalities like stillbirths, early enough for the parents to undergo medical procedures if required.

From pitching her idea to the Government of India in Oct 2015 to starting her own business in Jan 2017, she says it was a phenomenal journey. She stepped down from a high paying job to build ‘Kriya’ and her life until now was not less than a roller coaster ride. From having 12 iterations of the product to figuring out the algorithm, she says there are no regrets. She gave her everything into creating the solution for 3 years, even though she knew it would not generate revenue until it is market launched.

When you become an entrepreneur, you become everyone, and indeed she was everyone for Kriya. She was an investor, a marketer, a designer, an engineer, a salesperson and a user as well. Currently, the product is in the manufacturing phase and is expected to launch in India this year. So everyone get ready for this exciting launch because it is going to change the future for good.
