Story 2/2
Starting in 2016, the co-founders of Nemocare spent a year immensely researching problems in the field of maternal health care.
They visited less-resourced hospitals to analyse the difficulties that arise in NICUs(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). These special areas are designed to take care of babies who are born premature, have health problems, or experience a difficult birth. Due to lack of proper equipment and manpower in NICUs at these hospitals, they realised how delayed attention or an improper diagnosis by a nurse can lead to life-threatening conditions like Apnea, Hypothermia, or other kinds of distress to the baby. One of the biggest reasons why all hospitals cannot afford adequate number of monitors is because of the cost. Thus, building a simpler, smarter and an affordable monitor was the ideal solution to all of these problems.
Nemocare has developed a simple wireless wearable that looks like a foot band which can be worn on the baby’s leg. This IOT foot band works on the basis of pulse oximetry. Six clinical parameters are derived with the help of sensors equipped in the band to understand the health status of a baby. Nurses can monitor all the babies simultaneously from a central monitor that is connected to all the foot bands via Bluetooth. Data collected is transferred to the cloud for real-time analysis and pattern recognition is used to understand if the baby is going through any kind of distress. If the baby is not in a healthy condition, the foot band sends an alert to the monitor which then notifies the nurses about it.
Each unit of this simple yet life-changing IOT device is highly affordable and can be purchased in bulk by many hospitals. Currently, it is under clinical trials at hospitals in Karnataka and Telangana.
Wishing Pratyusha Pareddy and her whole team all the best for their journey in creating a stronger neonatal healthcare system in India.
