So many product teams work on new features they believe will be a game-changer for users. But how do you really know if a feature will be adopted by users? This is where UX research comes in. As UX researchers, we can help identify the probability of feature adoption by digging deep into user needs, behaviors, and expectations. Here are some ways we measure and predict feature adoption: 1. User Interviews and Surveys: By speaking directly to users, we can gauge their interest in a new feature. Through surveys or interviews, we explore how they might use the feature, what problems it would solve for them, and how it fits into their current workflows. These qualitative insights give us an early understanding of potential adoption barriers. 2. Usability Testing: A feature may seem like a great idea on paper, but how do users actually interact with it? Conducting usability tests on prototypes allows us to see whether users understand the feature, how intuitive it is, and where they might get stuck. If the feature feels cumbersome, adoption rates will likely be lower. 3. Task Success Rate: This metric allows us to measure how easily users can complete tasks using the new feature. A low success rate indicates friction, and users are less likely to adopt a feature if it doesn’t make their experience easier. 4. User Journey Mapping: By mapping out the user journey, we can see where the new feature fits into the overall user experience. Does it make sense within the flow of their tasks? Are there unnecessary steps or points of confusion? A smooth, integrated feature is more likely to be adopted. 5. A/B Testing: Once a feature is live, we can run A/B tests to see if it’s driving the desired behavior. Does the feature increase engagement or task completion compared to the previous version? These quantitative insights allow us to measure real-world adoption and refine the feature based on user interactions. 6. Feature Feedback: After a feature is released, gathering feedback is key. By monitoring user comments, satisfaction scores, and support tickets, we can understand how users feel about the feature. Are they using it as intended? Are there any pain points that need addressing? As UX researchers, our role is to validate whether a feature truly meets user needs and fits within their daily tasks. Prototyping is how ideas turn into evidence. It surface hidden assumptions, generate better stakeholder conversations, test specific hypotheses, reveal unforeseen interactions, and give you a concrete artifact to evaluate before code or tooling locks you in. Use low fidelity sketches and storyboards when you need speed and divergent thinking. They help teams externalize ideas, reason about user goals, and map flows before pixels appear. They are deliberately rough to avoid premature polish. Move to click through wireframes in Figma when the question is structure and navigation. Validate information architecture, menu depth, labeling, and path efficiency while changes are still cheap. When the feel of interaction matters, use interactive digital prototypes to evaluate micro interactions, timing, and visual polish. Treat them as validation instruments, not trophies. Plan change criteria up front so attachment to a pretty artifact does not silence real feedback. Some questions require real performance and materials. Coded prototypes and functional hardware mockups tell you about latency, reliability, durability, ergonomics, and safety. In medical devices and other regulated domains, high fidelity functional and contextual testing is expected for Human Factors validation. Not every question lives on screens. Experience prototyping and bodystorming put bodies in space to surface constraints that lab tasks miss. Acting out a shared autonomous ride with props reveals comfort, cue timing, and social norms. Wearing a telehealth mockup for a week exposes stigma, routine friction, and alert patterns that actually fit domestic life. Before building intelligence, simulate it. Wizard of Oz studies let a hidden human drive system responses while participants believe the system is autonomous. You learn vocabulary, trust dynamics, acceptable latency, and recovery strategies without heavy engineering. AI of Oz replaces the human with a large language model so you can study conversational realism early. Manage risks like model bias, hallucinations, and outages with guardrails and logging so findings remain trustworthy. Strategic prototypes also matter. Provotypes and research through design artifacts challenge assumptions, surface values, and force early conversations about privacy, power, and trade offs that slides tend to dodge.

But how do you choose the right rapid testing method? Task completion analysis measures success rates and time-on-task for specific user actions. First-click tests evaluate the intuitiveness of primary actions or information on a page. Tree testing focuses on how well users can navigate your site's structure. Sentiment analysis gauges user emotions and opinions about a product or experience. 5-second tests assess immediate impressions of designs or messages. Design surveys collect qualitative feedback on wireframes or mockups. The key is selecting the method that best aligns with your specific goals and questions. By leveraging rapid testing, you can de-risk decisions and innovate faster. It's not about replacing thorough research. It's about getting quick, directional data to inform your next steps. So before you invest heavily in that new feature or redesign, consider running a rapid test. It might just save you from a costly misstep and point you towards a more successful solution.

How to test your UX design without spending too much time and effort polishing mock-ups and prototypes ↓ ✅ Concept testing is an early real-world check of design ideas. ✅ It happens before a new product/feature is designed and built. ✅ It helps you find an idea that will meet user and business needs. ✅ Always low-fidelity, always pre-launch, always involves real users. 🚫 Testing, not validation: ideas are not confirmed, but evaluated. ✅ What people think, do, say and feel are often very different things. ✅ You’ll need 5 users per feature or a group of features. ✅ You will discover 85% of usability problems with 5 users. ✅ You will discover 100% of UX problems with 20–40 users. 🚫 Poor surveys are a dangerous, unreliable tool to assess design. 🚫 Never ask users if they prefer one design over the other. ✅ Ask what adjectives or qualities they connect with a design. ✅ Tree testing: ask users to find content in your navigation tree. ✅ Kano model survey: get user’s sentiment about new features. ✅ First impression test: ask to rate a concept against your keywords. ✅ Preference test: ask to pick a concept that better conveys keywords. ✅ Competitive testing: like preference test, but with competitor’s design. ✅ 5-sec test: show for 5 secs, then ask questions to answer from memory. ✅ Monadic testing: segment users, test concepts in-depth per segment. ✅ Concept testing isn’t one-off, but a continuous part of the UX process. In design process, we often speak about “validation” of the new design. Yet as Kara Pernice rightfully noted, the word is confusing and introduces bias. It suggests that we know it works, and are looking for data to prove that. Instead, test, study, watch how people use it, see where the design succeeds and fails. We don’t need polished mock-ups or advanced prototypes to test UX concepts. The earlier you bring your work to actual users, the less time you’ll spend on designing and building a solution that doesn’t meet user needs and doesn’t have a market fit. Customer discovery via functional prototypes + PostHog is night & day better than the old school way of asking for feedback on Figma mockups. Here's why: I get to observe actual user behavior instead of asking the user to guess how they might use my product. My favorite example of why this matters comes from a Sony Walkman user study. They asked a bunch of people what they thought about a yellow walkman and they said "so sporty! not boring like the black one!". And yet, when they were given the opportunity to take a walkman home after the study, everyone picked the black one. We learned a lot more from user behavior than we did expressed preferences. Here's my setup for now observing user behavior from prototypes: 1. Create a functional prototype in your favorite prototyping tool (Bolt, Lovable, Reforge Build, Magic Patterns, Claude Code) 2. Ask the prototyping tool to integrate PostHog analytics 3. Ask the prototyping tool to instrument key user actions in PostHog Then you get all of these ways of observing actual behavior: - DAUs \ WAUs \ retention curves - I can actually see if people come back and use my prototype instead of taking their word for it - Action metrics dashboards - I can see what actions people are taking vs not - Post-usage survey - I can add a built-in pop-up survey to ask the user a question about the experience after they have engaged with the prototype - Session replays - I can see exactly where people are clicking and how they are using the product to identify usability issues - Heatmaps - I can see what part of my design is working across all sessions I'd never go back to testing with just a mockup after this.

Dear Product Managers, Always remember this (warning: this post contains shocking statistics) Users are bad at telling you what they want but they are very good at showing you what matters to them. After 12 years in product, I’ve learned that the fastest way to uncover what users don’t like isn’t asking them directly but it’s choosing the right research method. Here’s the truth about accuracy: Surveys: 20 to 40% accuracy People guess, answer aspirationally or try to be polite. Good for signals, not truths. Interviews: 50 to 70% accuracy Better context, deeper insights but still influenced by memory, bias, and social pressure. Usability Testing: 70 to 90% accuracy Users won’t say something is confusing, they’ll show you. Watching real behavior is 10x more honest than any spoken answer. Analytics + Experiments (A/B tests): 90 to 100% accuracy The highest truth signal. When users abandon, rage-click, or drop off… that’s real feedback. No opinions. No filters. Just behavior. So if your goal is to understand what users don’t like: 👉 Focus on behavior-based methods. Usability tests Heatmaps Session recordings Funnel analytics A/B tests Ask users what they love but watch them to discover what they hate. That’s where the real product opportunities live.

People teams are always expected to do things perfectly. They’re expected to come up with a preened policy, a polished performance process, a precise career path framework. And this perfection-expectation can be an absolute mare to wrestle with when you’re trying to work like a product team. Especially when it comes to prototyping. Because that’s the messy stuff. The shitty first draft. The first pancake. The scrappy sketch. And it's also gold dust when it comes to getting feedback. “Oh feedback?” you say. “But we have no problem getting feedback from our teams. In fact, when are we not getting feedback of some kind?!” Sure. But I'm guessing most of that feedback is reactive. Not invited, structured, or tied to something you’re testing, am I right?! So how can you confidently share a very-much-not-finished prototype and still feel in control of what you learn from it? Enter: Pitch it, Break it, Build it, Fix it (anyone else hear Daft Punk when they read that out loud?) A simple card to help you capture and test people experience ideas with more confidence, and fewer perfectionist spirals (well, at least we can work our way up to that, eh?!) Here’s how it works: → Pitch it Explain what the idea is and why it matters. Who’s it for? What problem does it solve? What’s the most basic version you could test? → Break it Invite your team to poke holes in it. Where might it fail? What’s unclear? What wouldn’t land, and why? → Build it Now rebuild the idea with them, based on what you’ve learned. What still holds up? What needs to evolve? How could it become more workable, testable, useful? → Ship it Work with your team to get it in front of real users, fast, light, and focused. What’s the smallest, real-world test you could run? How will you know what’s working? Use it in your team retro, a 1-1 session, or when shaping a new idea with stakeholders. We often assume that testing our UX designs is a time-consuming process because usability testing usually involves detailed prototypes and extensive sessions. But there’s a faster way: comprehension-based usability testing. This method focuses on validating whether users understand the information on the screen without requiring a fully interactive prototype. It’s all about testing if your design communicates effectively. By engaging real users and asking open-ended questions about your prototype, you can quickly identify misunderstandings and address assumptions you might have made as a designer. The key is to focus on qualitative feedback from unbiased users—people who haven’t seen the design before. This helps you spot areas where the design may fail to communicate as intended, all without the need for exhaustive testing.
