Nano Tips - Future of technology?

Nano Tips - Future of technology?

As both a parent and a technologist, I have recently been reflecting on the trend on where we are headed versus where we should be headed.

  • At work...  you see an image of a group of people glued to the computers.
  • At home...  you see an image of a group of family members glued to the TVs.

And everywhere...  you see an image of people always heads down on their phones, and in the rare cases they are not heads down, they are probably trying to capture the next rare Pokemon.

-----------

Back in the days, we write code to program and instruct computers to perform certain tasks...

But now a day, it seems like we are writing code to control human behaviors - just look at the phenomenal around Pokemon Go where people are programmed to go to certain locations and to behave certain ways.

What do the future look like?

What do the future I want my kids to grow up in should look like?

----------

Technology should be used wisely to (some examples) ...

  • automate and optimize what we do so we can spend our times on bigger problems as well as on more important things (like quality family time)
  • expand our horizons so that our minds are more empowered and diverse to achieve greater innovations that are beneficial to our society
  • enable you to stay connected to your families and friends by eliminating the distance barriers
  • advance and improve our lives and health

Technology should enable you to have more free time, not taking every second of your lives away from you and your family.  Now please stop reading this article so you can get some time back to spend with your loved ones.  :)

I decided to start publishing nano tips so others can learn and encourage each other as an experiment.  These are personal observations and lessons learnt.  If this seems interesting to you, leave a feedback so I know whether or not to continue.

Great article, Peter! I'm often chiding my kids to spend less time with their devices. I teach organizations how to "be Agile" and one of the principles is the importance of face-to-face interactions so, yes, please continue your nano tips!

Well put Peter. While not completely separated from technology, I spend most of my free time listening to podcasts. Without the need to focus 100% of my attention looking at a screen (or a book to that end), I can still learn while admiring the world around me, playing with my dog...or doing laundry.

Awesome tip Peter and I strongly agree with this we no longer have cable at the house and the kids watch less than an hour a week normally... Every night we spend time with them reading to us or Kristi reading to them. As a person who struggles with English even to this day because of a learning disability I am amazed at my son and daughter reading to me
