E- MOBILITY AND INDIA

E- MOBILITY AND INDIA

The fact that the biggest decision makers, industry leaders, environmentalist are finally conglomerating to discuss the climate change and the immediate dangers lurking at the door is a sign of the revolutionary change. Today climate threat is imminent any major economic decision revolves around carbon neutrality and climate sustainability. A price paid for the ignorance and arrogance, we impressed upon the very environment we lived in.

Although a lot of ground has been covered in repairing the damage sustained by way of looking at alternate energy, fuel, cleaner & efficient manufacturing processes. Keywords like rain water harvesting, soil conservation, organic farming etc. have become operational and are significant achievements for the human race. It’s more like the human race giving it back to the nature to co-exist.

The hype surrounding the impact of E-Mobility on the climate goals set by COP21, the 2DS and the 4DS working group is all about saving a planet for the future generations. The goals are attainable but treading the path all alone for EVs would be too harsh, they need the world’s regulatory bodies to have common goals. Disruptive technology with imperative regulatory minds is “Way Forward”.

The foremost requirement for every other nation is the energy sufficiency, the ones who don’t have are chasing it, the ones who have it find it challenging to sustain in the context to carbon neutrality. The regulatory bodies haven’t done enough either to help the cause.

The Indian picture with respect to this particular sector has been positive to an extent though the solar story isn't that bright. Right from becoming energy sufficient to having an energy mix of 35% from renewable the transition is commendable. The question that looms, are we ready for the next level, adoption of e-mobility in the present energy scenario.

The EV is definitely an important checkbox that India has to invariably tick, just the mere data of crude oil consumption 4 million barrels imported per day, 45% of the petroleum production is diesel (HDO/LDO) and 15% constitutes petrol (MS). These figures make more sense when it emerges 75% of diesel and almost 99.9% of petrol is consumed by the transport sector. The crude oil basket for India swelled up to 80 billion USD for 2016-2017. The CAGR of 5% annual increase in consumption and approximately 500 million vehicles sales as suggested by studies by 2030, crude basket cart shall be above 300 billion USD. A mere 5-10% conversion to EV is sufficient to ring alarm bells with oil exporting nations. The concerns of oil security for a positive global rating and sustained economic growth needs this checkbox to be ticked unfailingly.

The roadblocks to this ambitious goal are several, zero infrastructural readiness significantly hurts. The problems of creating the requisite Eco-system is also one of the key enablers, by way of looking at developed countries and adopting a model nation is a way ahead.

The growth of the alternate cleaner energy is significant to help the adoption of EV, if every EV purchased through govt. subsidies is charged from these cleaner energies shall we achieve the goals we intend to by way of “Giving it back to nature”.

“Minimizing and not aggravating the environment in the veil of economic growth does require a successful EV chapter in India”.
