Sure, these things help. But personal branding isn’t just about you—it’s about the value you bring to others. Let’s take a marketing professional, as an example. Lets call her Anjali. Anjali’s personal brand isn’t built just because she posts consistently on LinkedIn. It’s built because: • She shares actionable insights that help small business owners improve their marketing. • She mentors young professionals looking to enter the marketing industry. • She’s known offline for solving real-world problems through innovative campaigns.     Personal branding is one of the buzzwords that keeps cropping up. As an executive coach who wants to help people reconnect with their purpose and passions and as a lifelong marketer, I can get behind it. A personal brand builds your credibility, helps you establish yourself as an expert in your field and communicates your experience and value to your audience and potential future employers. But how do you develop your personal brand? If your go-to answer was, “Start developing content and publishing it on social media platforms”, please continue reading. To truly develop your personal brand, the first step is to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery. Only once you know your purpose, passions, skills and strengths can you share your authentic self with your audience. Follow these six steps to develop your personal brand: 1. Understand your purpose (and values) 2. Create a long-term mission and vision for your life 3. Construct your narrative – remember to be authentic! 4. Identify your target audience (key stakeholders) 5. Share your story (now this is where social media can be involved) 6. Monitor and assess how your brand equity Creating your personal brand requires a great deal of introspection and is not a quick exercise, but I promise you the benefit is worth the effort! Here’s a quick teaser. Grab a pen and paper and: ➡️ Write down activities which make you feel energized and fulfilled ➡️ Jot down your strengths by thinking about areas you excel in ➡️ Make a list of your accomplishments ➡️ Analyze and write out the skills you mastered to achieve your accomplishments ➡️ Map out your strengths, skills and passions to determine what makes you unique. The above exercise allows you to align your personal brand with what you genuinely enjoy, what you’re good at and what skills you already have, which will all lead to greater authenticity and confidence in how you present yourself.     I’m running a session on Personal Branding today. Here’s a sneak peek at what the team will learn… Your personal brand isn’t your title, your résumé, or your LinkedIn headline. It’s the story people tell about you when you’re not in the room. Here’s the thing, your brand already exists, whether you’ve shaped it intentionally or not. A strong personal brand does two things: 1) It aligns with your career goals — so people see you as ready for the roles you want next. 2) It aligns with your company’s values — so your credibility grows inside the organization, not against it. Curious about how to strengthen yours? Try these three things. DEFINE IT Choose 3 words you want people to use when they describe you. Then ask a few trusted colleagues what words they’d use now. The gap between the two is your roadmap. SHOW IT Every meeting, every email, and every presentation is a brand building moment. Be intentional about tone, follow-through, and presence. SHARE IT Post insights or lessons that connect to your values and expertise — not self-promotion, but contribution. Your personal brand is your professional reputation in motion.     Are you worried that building your personal brand might ruffle feathers at work? It's a common concern. I was just speaking with someone who felt stuck – she wanted to establish herself as a thought leader, but she knew her employer wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about it. Understandably, companies can feel hesitant about personal branding if you’re not in a top-tier role. Questions may arise: Why is this person in the spotlight? Will they represent us well, or are they simply building their brand to move on? But here’s the thing: you can build your brand strategically without creating friction: ✳ Collaborate, don’t clash Find ways to align your goals with the company’s. For example, if your organization wants visibility in your field, you can propose speaking engagements or articles in industry publications – activities that highlight both you and the company positively. Team up with the communications team to ensure everyone feels supported. ✳ Leverage your company’s brand power Take full advantage of your employer’s credibility. Networking becomes easier when people are excited to meet you because of where you work. This brand association can help expand your connections without stepping on any toes. ✳ Know when to dial back Building a public-facing brand inside a company sometimes means a slower pace. Keep your activities relevant and aligned with the organization’s goals, and consider pacing things until you’re at a level where it feels more natural.
