Tools like code coverage analysis can help identify areas where additional testing is needed. 📌 Code Reviews for Tests: Just like code changes, tests should undergo thorough code reviews to ensure their quality and effectiveness. This helps catch any issues or oversights in the testing logic before they are integrated into the codebase. 📌 Parameterized and Data-Driven Tests: Incorporate parameterized and data-driven testing techniques to increase the versatility and comprehensiveness of your tests. Many teams investing in unit tests also track code coverage. Coverage typically tells you how much of your code is executed via developer tests. (And no: it doesn't tell you if those "tests" are any good, but that's a separate discussion). Coverage, done right, is a useful guide. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most misused software metrics. The problem starts when we put a minimum threshold on the codebase, such as "all code must have at least 80 percent coverage." It might sound rational, but could *increase* rather than reduce the risk of changing code. Rather, the level of coverage you need is context-dependent: * Refactoring a complex hotspot? You want close to full coverage here. * Working within critical code with a high cost of failure? 80% is too low. * Making a small change to stable code? Well, perhaps it's enough to only cover the change or -- heresy -- nothing at all. The number is secondary; not an end in itself, nor meaningful as a general recommendation. It's just a number. Instead, let your coverage decisions be guided by the context, change rate, and risk of the code you're touching.

Let's talk about REAL API testing. Just ran our test suite: 88% line coverage, 59% branch coverage across 949 files. But that's not the flex - it's WHEN and HOW we run these tests that matters. Here's what most teams get wrong: They deploy to the dev environment first and then run API tests. The damage is already done. That's not testing; that's confirming bugs. Here's how we do it: 1. Developer raises PR 2. Spin up the infra within the pipeline like databases 3. Run the migrations 4. API tests run against the changes 5. Coverage reports show what we're missing 6. Code doesn't ship until tests pass Every. Single. Time. This gives us the confidence to ship weekly updates without breaking things. But here's the catch - don't worship coverage numbers blindly. A test with 100% coverage but weak assertions is worse than no test. It gives false confidence. We constantly evolve our test suite based on bug reports, adding assertions, and catching edge cases. Remember: Coverage tells you what code ran. Assertions tell you if it ran correctly. Too many teams treat testing as a metric rather than an opportunity. A developer is told to write tests, so they do the bare minimum to hit the required coverage percentage. A function runs inside a unit test, the coverage tool marks it as covered, and the developer moves on. The percentage goes up, leadership is satisfied, and the codebase is left with the illusion of quality. But what was actually tested? Too often, the answer is: almost nothing. The logic was executed, but its behavior was never challenged. The function was called, but its failure modes were ignored. The edge cases, error handling, and real-world complexity were never explored. The opportunity to truly exercise the code and ensure it works in every scenario was completely missed. This is a systemic failure in how organizations think about testing. Instead of seeing unit, integration, and end-to-end (E2E) testing as distinct silos, they should recognize that all testing is just exercising the same code. The farther you get from the code, the harder and more expensive it becomes to test. If logic is effectively tested at the unit and integration level, it does not suddenly behave differently at the E2E level. Software is a rational system. A well-tested function does not magically start failing in production unless something external—such as infrastructure or dependencies—introduces instability. When developers treat unit and integration testing as a checkbox exercise, they push the real burden of testing downstream. Bugs that should have been caught in milliseconds by a unit test are now caught minutes or hours later in an integration test, or even days later during E2E testing. Some are not caught at all until they reach production. Organizations then spend exponentially more time and money debugging issues that should never have existed in the first place. The best engineering teams do not chase code coverage numbers. They see testing as an opportunity to build confidence in their software at the lowest possible level. They write tests that ask hard questions of the code, not just ones that execute it. They recognize that when testing is done well at the unit and integration level, their E2E tests become simpler and more reliable—not a desperate last line of defense against failures that should have been prevented. But the very best testers go even further. They recognize the system for what it truly is—a beautiful, interconnected mosaic of logic, data, and dependencies. They do not just react to failures at the UX/UI layer, desperately trying to stop an avalanche of possible combinations. They seek to understand and control the system itself, shaping it in a way that prevents those avalanches from happening in the first place. After 25+ years in #QA, one architectural pattern keeps repeating. Most escaped defects were not caused by people being unable to test well. They were caused by the system’s inability to be re-tested frequently enough. Modern software changes constantly. Daily commits. Daily merges. Daily deployments. Humans can test deeply. But a system without automation cannot revalidate behavior every day, across environments, at scale. That is where defects escape. Automation exists for one core architectural reason: repeatability at speed. High-quality automated coverage enables a system to: 1) Re-run the same critical paths daily or continuously 2) Revalidate regression after every meaningful change 3) Preserve confidence that yesterday’s behavior still works today 4) Allocate human effort to exploration, risk analysis, and design feedback - not repetition When automation is missing, the system is forced into trade-offs: 1) Test less often 2) Test smaller slices 3) Rely on memory, heroics, and hope Hope is not a strategy. The goal of automation is not to replace humans. It is to make frequent, repeatable validation a built-in property of the system. Without that property, quality cannot keep up with change. For decades, we've relied on layers of testing like unit, functional, and end-to-end tests—casting wide nets in hopes of catching bugs before they hit production. Yet, after 20 years, the core challenge remains: critical bugs still slip through, costing millions. The issue isn't just about code coverage; it's about Test Coverage. True test coverage isn't just running some tests—it's about fully understanding what is and isn't tested across the entire system. Organizations use test plans, code coverage reports, and layered tests, but these often fail to reveal the actual extent of their test coverage. Why does this happen? It's not just about the product; it's about the data. Each product's data is different, and every tester's skillset varies. This lack of standardization makes it tough to determine true test coverage and create tests that effectively target potential failure points. The formula is really simple, but I'm surprised most testers don't see it: Test Coverage = Test Effectiveness + Production Data So, what does this mean? Test Effectiveness measures how well our testing processes identify and catch bugs before they reach production. It's about the number of bugs caught and how quickly we find them, relative to the bugs that leak into production: Test Effectiveness = (Bugs Caught Before Production + Speed of Finding Bugs) / Bugs Leaked Into Production To improve Test Coverage, we need to: 🍊 Enhance Test Effectiveness: - Design better tests that cover critical paths and potential failure points. - Accelerate bug detection through continuous testing and automation. 🍊 Integrate Production Data: - Simulate real-world scenarios using data that mirrors actual user behavior. - Establish feedback loops to update your test data based on production insights. It's time to shift our mindset from merely increasing code coverage percentages to genuinely enhancing test coverage through effective testing and realistic data. 🧪 “How do you decide what to test?” This question gets asked a lot. And the answer isn’t sexy, but it’s strategic: You don’t test everything. You test what matters. Here is MY go-to model for delivering maximum test coverage with minimum waste: 1. ⚠️Risk First: If it breaks, how bad is it? → Ask: What’s the worst thing that could happen if this breaks? → Prioritize payment flows, auth, data integrity, anything with "compliance" in the email subject. 2. 👤User Behavior: How could a chaotic user destroy this? → Test like a chaotic user, not a compliant one. → Think: double-clicks, network drops, copy-pasted emoji payloads, 200 open tabs. 3. 🔁Regression: Could this break something old or shared? → Cover legacy logic and shared components. → One div in one modal can break 12 other places. Ask me how I know. 4.🧬Code Changes: Did the code touch something fragile? → New code? New tests. → Test where the code changed not just what the ticket says changed. 5. 🔗Integration > Unit (sometimes): Bugs hide in the seams. Not the functions. → Unit tests are cheap. → But bugs don’t care about your microservices’ feelings, they happen at the seams. 6. 📉Analytics: Is this even used by real humans? → Use analytics: What features are actually used? → Test coverage should reflect reality, not just the backlog. 💥 TL;DR: Don’t test for the sake of testing. Your code coverage is 80%? Congrats… but your tests might still be useless. For years, code coverage has been the go-to metric for testing. The idea? The more lines of code covered, the better your tests. But here’s the problem: 🚨 90% code coverage does not mean high-quality tests. 🚨 0% code coverage doesn’t necessarily mean bad code, just that if you break it you won't have a clue. I’ve seen teams aim for high coverage, only to realize their tests weren’t actually catching or preventing real bugs. So what should we really measure? ✅ Do your tests actually catch and prevent bugs? ✅ Do they cover real-world use cases—both happy paths and edge cases? ✅ Can your tests detect unexpected mutations or regressions? Here is our attempt to define a new way to measure the tests quality of the tests themselves: 🔥 EQS (Early Quality Score) 🔥 Instead of just checking how much of your code is covered, EQS factors in test quality with three key dimensions: Code Coverage – What % of your code is tested? Mutation Score – How well do your tests detect real code changes? Scope Coverage – What percentage of your public methods have unit tests and 100% coverage? This takes test quality to the next level, answering the real question: Are my tests actually protecting my code? We’ve been using EQS internally at Early, and the insights are game-changing. You don’t need 100% code coverage. You need these 3 things instead: Many embedded teams think full coverage means bug-free. So they set 100% code coverage as the goal. But they forget that code coverage is only a measure, not the goal. Goodhart’s Law says it best: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.” Instead of aiming for 100% coverage, aim for these 3 things: 1. Critical path coverage Test your actual code that reflects real-world scenarios. Testing non-critical paths, like your boilerplate code, is just a distraction. 2. More realistic targets 100% coverage with 0% assertions still passes. And that makes zero sense. 70-80% coverage with solid assertions is way better. The question isn’t how much coverage you have, it’s how meaningful your assertions are. 3. Focus on code testability Coverage can’t save you from untestable code. Yes, it gets executed during a test run. But if it’s tightly coupled, side-effect-heavy, and poorly structured? You can’t write meaningful tests for it. Stop chasing the perfect number. Chase what actually makes your code safer to ship: - Real-world coverage - Useful assertions - Code that wants to be tested Because 100% coverage doesn’t mean it works. It just means it “ran”. A few releases ago, we were preparing a deployment that looked perfect on paper. All Apex classes had 90% test coverage. No failed test methods. CI/CD pipeline in Copado showed green across the board. But when we pushed to production — users started reporting broken automations. Why? Because our tests didn’t test behavior — they only tested execution. Here’s what I learned (and changed) after that release 👇 1️⃣ Write Meaningful Unit Tests Don’t just aim for 75% coverage. Validate expected outcomes. Example: Instead of only inserting an Account, assert that related Contacts and Opportunities were created correctly. 2️⃣ Use @testSetup Methods Wisely Create reusable data for all test cases. It saves time and ensures consistency. 3️⃣ Mock External Calls For REST and SOAP integrations, use HttpCalloutMock to simulate responses — never make real API calls in tests. 4️⃣ Test Negative Scenarios What happens when a required field is blank? Or when a Flow fails? True stability comes from testing for failure, not just success. 5️⃣ Automate Regression Tests in CI/CD Use tools like Copado, Gearset, or Salesforce DX to automate test runs before every deployment. “Code coverage tells you what executed.
