    🔹 A Practical Comparison Between PVsyst, SAM, and PV*SOL From my hands-on experience in solar system design, I’d like to share a practical comparison I conducted while designing an on-grid PV system for the Faculty of Engineering, Sana'a University. In this experiment, I used three of the most popular solar engineering simulation tools: PVsyst, SAM, and PV*SOL. The attached image provides a direct comparison between the outputs of these tools for the same system using identical components. 🎯 Objective of the Study: To achieve a safe and electrically reliable design, and to analyze the accuracy and performance of each software in simulating both the technical and financial aspects of a PV system. The system used JinkoSolar 670W bifacial modules, configured as 27 modules per string and 24 strings in total, connected to a single Sungrow SG350HX inverter. 1️⃣ PVsyst During the data input process, the software displayed a red warning indicating that the open-circuit voltage (Voc) under low-temperature conditions was approaching the MPPT input limit (1493V out of 1500V). 🔸 This critical warning allowed me to adjust the string configuration to prevent potential equipment damage or system failure. 🔹 Neither SAM nor PV*SOL issued any warning regarding this point, even though the same data and components were used in both tools. 🧩 Conclusion: This demonstrates that PVsyst offers the highest level of electrical verification and design safety, making it the best choice for medium to large-scale projects where reliability is crucial. 2️⃣ SAM (System Advisor Model) The upper section of the image shows the system setup in SAM, a software developed by NREL, known for its strength in financial and economic analysis. 🔸 Although it did not flag any high-voltage warning, SAM excelled in calculating financial indicators such as LCOE and NPV, providing accurate results for project feasibility evaluation. 🧩 Conclusion: SAM is ideal when the goal is to analyze project economics and evaluate investment performance rather than detailed electrical design. 3️⃣ PV*SOL The image also shows a 3D layout of the solar array on the university rooftop, along with detailed shading analysis. 🔸 Like SAM, PV*SOL did not issue any voltage warnings, but it provided outstanding visual representation and realistic modeling of shading and cable routing. 🧩 Conclusion: PV*SOL is best suited for commercial and residential projects that require realistic 3D visualization and client-friendly technical reports. 💡 Final Thoughts: There is no single “best” software — only the most suitable one depending on your project objectives. PVsyst stands out for technical precision and electrical safety. SAM excels in economic and financial modeling. PV*SOL shines in 3D visualization and presentation. At Future Energy, we adopt this integrated approach in our engineering studies to ensure the highest levels of safety, accuracy, and economic efficiency before implementation.

    I got asked this yesterday by a #solar installer : "We are at ~$30M in annual revenue with 120 full-time employees. We use NetSuite as our CRM and ERP. We currently use Aurora for our sales designs and AutoCAD for our designs. Our proposal tool and project field management are customer inhouse excel / Google Sheets. We want to explore upgrading our Proposal Tool, Project/Field Management, and Customer Experience software. Who are the main players for these parts of our #SoftwareStack?" What did I answered with? See below. "To answer your question: For proposal tools, if you're already using Aurora Solar for design, then they also have a proposal component as well. The other one that is free for installers is OpenSolar. The 3 most critical things you want in a proposal tool are: 1) It can integrate with your CRM (Netsuite) 2) It creates a presentation view of the proposal that is visually appealing and ultra simple for the customer to understand 3) It integrates with the lenders that you currently use For Project/Field Management, I break this down into 2 parts (1) Project management for the back-office team and (2) Field apps for the crew. For Project management look into Scoop Solar.  #Monday.com might work too though your company might be on the bigger side of most companies that use it. However it's a big and good step up from Google Sheets. The most critical thing you want in a PM tool is that it's easy for your team to use. I'm sure that's one of the reasons why you're not using Netsuite for project management.  For field apps for your crew to take photos and log end of day reports, I recommend Device Magic. I've heard CompanyCam is good as well. Ease of use on mobile devices and integrations with your document system are key requirements. For Customer Experience, I only recommend Bodhi® for solar installers. GTR is a competitor of ours though. Key consideration in this area is if it delivers the outcome to your business that you're aiming for. This primarily will be freeing up your operations team's time and lower cancellation rates followed by improving marketing metrics like Google review scores and referrals." ---------- What do you think?
