    SAP Joule is not just a chatbot sitting on top of your ERP. The integration architecture tells a more interesting story. When Joule connects with S/4HANA, here is what is actually happening under the hood: The end user interacts through the Application Client, but authentication runs through SAP Cloud Identity Services with Identity Provisioning handling the trust flow between source and target systems. Nothing reaches Joule without that identity layer being resolved first. Inside BTP, the Joule Assistant operates through a Capabilities framework — connected to a Content Channel via SAP Build Work Zone, with Cloud Foundry Runtime underneath. The Destination and Connectivity Services handle the back-end data access back to S/4HANA's OData Services and Content Provider. The Document Grounding component is worth paying attention to. It extends Joule's context beyond transactional data — pulling from Microsoft SharePoint customer documents via CDM design-time access. This is where the "enterprise context" in AI responses actually comes from. Three things this architecture signals: 1. BTP is the non-negotiable integration fabric — Joule does not work around it, it works through it. 2. Identity and trust setup is the first real implementation challenge, not the AI configuration. 3. The value of Joule scales directly with the quality of your content grounding and OData exposure. AI in ERP is only as intelligent as the architecture enabling it.

    Secure architecture options for connecting Copilot Studio agents to SAP data. Here's the thing: Your agents unlock their real value when they connect to enterprise data systems like SAP. Most companies have their critical business data locked in SAP: orders, inventory, financials, customer records. The challenge? Getting your Copilot Studio agents to securely connect to that data without breaking your security model or creating audit nightmares. The good news is Microsoft expanded SSO authentication for SAP connectors, and it's changing how we architect these integrations. 👉🏽Four Ways to Connect Power Platform to SAP: 1️⃣SAP ERP Connector (RFC/BAPI) Your direct line to SAP function modules. Uses the on-premises data gateway and SAP .NET Connector to invoke RFCs and BAPIs. The breakthrough here is certificate-based SSO through Microsoft Entra ID, so no more service principals, and your audit trails stay clean. 2️⃣SAP OData Connector The modern approach for API-based interactions. Now in public preview with expanded SSO via Azure API Management, it uses OAuth2SAMLBearer flows so users authenticate with Entra ID while SAP sees their actual named user and enforces their authorizations. 3️⃣Custom Connectors (REST/SOAP) When you need flexibility for custom SAP web services or already have REST/SOAP endpoints exposed. You can wrap SAP SOAP services as RESTful APIs using Azure API Management or SAP API Management to make them Power Platform-friendly. 4️⃣Power Automate Desktop (RPA) For those legacy SAP GUI scenarios where APIs don't exist yet, desktop flows can automate repetitive screen-based tasks. Not elegant, but sometimes necessary. 👉🏽The Architecture (Three Zones) Think of it as three layers: your Power Platform environment, the connectivity middleware (API Management or on-premises gateway), and SAP itself . Data flows through firewalls and gateways, with Microsoft Entra ID handling authentication for SSO scenarios. For OData and REST, Azure API Management sits in the middle enabling principal propagation and policy-based security. For RFC connections, the on-premises gateway with SAP .NET Connector is your bridge. 👉🏽Where to Start Check what your SAP system already exposes. If OData services exist for your use case, that's usually the best path because of modern architecture and flexibility. If not, decide whether API Management or an on-premises gateway fits your infrastructure better. The expanded SSO capabilities mean you can finally maintain enterprise-grade security while giving low-code developers the ability to build solutions that respect SAP authorizations and audit requirements. Instead of brittle API calls or isolated task bots, we’ve deployed an MCP Server that acts as a shared memory and context layer, enabling autonomous agents to retrieve, reason, and act on enterprise data in real time.
