When I was 30, I was a savage. 16-hour days, constant hustle, and no vacations and I don’t regret it one bit. But, now at 45, as a founder and parent of 3, I’ve traded grind for intentionality. Here’s how I balance work and life without sacrificing either: == 1) Skip alcohol and THC. I used alcohol to blow off steam after long days. I thought I deserved it. Now, avoiding those crutches has transformed how I sleep, wake up, and show up for my kids. 2) Sleep is a superpower. I’m in bed around 9:30pm and wake up around 530am. Better recovery leads to thinking clearer, leading better, and showing up fully. 3) Carve out personal space. I go for a 30-60 min run first thing. My biggest breakthrough thoughts come during my morning run. 4) Involve the kids. I used to compartmentalize “work” and “family.” Now, I bring my kids into what I’m doing whenever possible. Whether it’s having them sit on my lap during a podcast or showing them what Dad’s working on, it’s a way to connect and bring them into my world. 5) Outsource house chores. Mowing the lawn? Deep cleaning the house? This is like stepping over dollars to pick up dimes. I’m sure you enjoy it to a degree, but free yourself for what truly matters: family, health, and the work that moves the needle. 6) Use time blocks. I was clueless. In My Job, I Had: a) A fixed routine that I followed every day. b) tasks and deadlines were pre-determined by the company. c) supervisors to share responsibilities and offer guidance. I was part of the process. But in My Business, I Drive the Process 1) Every decision and action depend on me. 2) From planning to execution, everything rests on my shoulders. I AM THE PROCESS. So, it’s super important to plan things logically and distribute time to every single thing. This is what I follow now: 1. Management: - Meetings, calls, emails, etc. 2. Creation: - Writing, coding, building, preparing. 3. Consumption: - Reading, listening, studying. 4. Ideation: - Brainstorming, journaling, reflecting. - Starting Monday: At the end of each day, color code your tasks: - Red: Management - Green: Creation - Blue: Consumption - Yellow: Ideation - End of Week: Look at the color mix on your calendar to see your current balance. Tips for a Better Balance 1. Batch Management Time - Group Management tasks into specific blocks each day. - Example: 1-3 blocks for emails, calls, and meetings. - Goal: Keep Management tasks confined to these blocks to make room for other activities. 2. 5 things that I do daily to stay balanced & organized. 1. I work in 45-50 minute sessions as often as possible. I try not to schedule back to back meetings. I call this classroom style. You have a class and then you have 5-10 minutes to walk to the next class. Walk away from your laptop & phone for 5-10 minutes an hour. It makes a big difference. You will be more productive. 2. Implement exercise into your work day. Some people have walking treadmills that they use while they work. I try to get 10k+ steps in a day. 5000 by the time I eat breakfast. Throughout the day during breaks I will bust out a set of 50 pushups or take the dog for a short walk. 3. Go outside. Fresh air and sunshine are great for you. Yesterday was beautiful in the DMV. I sat outside for 20 minutes during lunch. I felt totally refreshed in the afternoon & was super productive. 4. Use a daily "to-do" list. Prioritize the most sensitive tasks or issues. Mark them off when you are done. The sense of accomplishment will reduce some of the anxiety. Also keep your Outlook inbox clean. Use folders. I end every day making sure that my inbox has 30 or fewer items in it. 5. Communicate in a timely manner. My employees know that if I am not traveling my response times will be 2 hours or less. If I get slammed, I will put my out of office reply on with an update. That way no one is wondering why I am not getting back to them as quickly as normal.
