    When you meet with someone remotely, do you feel as connected as you would sitting in the same room with them? Meet Ross Cutler, whose research is helping to bridge the gap between remote and in-person meetings. From speech clarity to eye contact to meeting culture, Ross is tackling the invisible – but critical – barriers to virtual communication. For example, poor audio quality can make online meetings feel tiring and unnatural. Traditional signal processing helps, but often fails in noisy, real-world conditions. To address this, Ross created large-scale, realistic training datasets based on real audio clips and used them to train AI models that work well to improve audio quality in actual meetings. Of course, communication isn’t just about being heard – it’s also about being seen and understood. Nobody likes being ignored or talked over in a meeting. To understand what makes for a good meeting, Ross implemented a scalable measurement method to collect subjective ratings of meeting effectiveness and inclusiveness from participants at the end of a meeting. He then studied a large number of such survey results and learned a lot about how technology can impact your organization’s meeting culture (https://lnkd.in/gnq6nGH5). Want to get your message across effectively? Use screen-sharing. Want people to feel included in the meeting? Turn on video. And as technology advances, you can expect Ross to continue making remote meetings even better. Recent progress in generative video, for example, has made it possible to create photorealistic avatars that are indistinguishable from real video. We may soon be able to move from using tiled video to represent the people in a remote meeting to projecting meeting participants into a virtual conference room while preserving eye gaze, all without using virtual reality glasses. Use AI to help colleagues get a second chance ↳ Turn feedback into coaching. Use ChatGPT to reframe past mistakes into growth stories. 2. Offer better feedback with AI powered clarity ↳ Tools like Grammarly or ChatGPT can help you say “this needs work” without sounding like a Bond villain. 3. Help prep someone for an interview using AI mock questions ↳ Feed the job description into ChatGPT and get tailored practice questions. Add pressure by staring at them. 4. Use reminders and AI assistants to follow through on your promises ↳ Microsoft Copilot can remember what you’ve forgotten. Including that email from three days ago. 5. Use AI to know when to say NO ↳ Your calendar is a data source. Use AI to spot overload and prevent burnout (yours and everyone else’s). 6. Turn praise into impact using AI sentiment tools ↳ Give feedback that lands. AI can help you strike the right tone and hit ‘send’ faster. 7. Use AI to summarise meetings, so you only invite who needs to be there ↳ Record it, run it through Copilot or similar. Give people their time back. 8. Share your knowledge by building an internal AI knowledge base ↳ Upload decks, docs, FAQs. Then let people ask questions without pinging you at 9 PM. 9. Help others solve problems by creating reusable AI prompts ↳ Faced that challenge before? Share your best prompt and save someone hours. 10. Use AI to scout opportunities and share them ↳ Set up alerts or use AI to scan for job openings, speaking gigs, awards. Pass them on. 11. Automate your admin so you can focus on high impact work ↳ AI shouldn’t replace effort. Just the tedious bits. 12. Use AI to improve listening. Not replace it ↳ Meeting transcripts help you revisit what was said. But you still need to care. Being an AI enabled leader isn’t about offloading everything.     A little while back, Bradford Church & I pivoted Village. We started on one problem, but kept experiencing a bigger problem; how you make remote & hybrid work, actually work. Here’s how we’re solving it👇 Quick context: we came from Uber, and originally started Village to build tech that creates way better relationships between marketplace platforms and the workers and suppliers that power them. But a few big things changed along the way. Our team was fully remote. That meant we were able to hire incredible people, but the day-to-day of remote sucked. You often hear high performing companies — UberOpenAIApple — referred to as cults. These companies make talented people irrationally motivated to hit insane goals. Remote kills that. The high trust and vulnerability needed is hurt by fewer close relationships. You need speed and direct communication, but ~50% of employee time in remote gets spent on informational updates and transactional video calls. Finally, ownership erodes. It’s not because people can hide. It’s because you don’t bond as a group and create a shared sense of ownership of something bigger than each other. So what’s the solution? We call it Atlas. It’s already made our team 10x more connected and productive working remotely. How does it work?
