    Publisher experiments fail when they start with tactics, not hypotheses. A/B testing has become a staple in digital publishing, but for many publishers, it’s little more than tinkering with headlines, button colours, or send times. The problem is that these tests often start with what to change rather than why to change it. Without a clear, measurable hypothesis, most experiments end up producing inconclusive results or chasing vanity wins that don’t move the business forward. Top-performing publishers approach testing like scientists: They identify a friction point, build a hypothesis around audience behaviour, and run the experiment long enough to gather statistically valid results. They don’t test for the sake of testing; they test to solve specific problems that impact retention, conversions, or revenue. 3 experiments that worked, and why 1. Content depth vs. breadth: Instead of spreading efforts across many topics, one publisher focused on fewer topics in greater depth. This depth-driven strategy boosted engagement and conversions because it directly supported the business goal of increasing loyal readership, and the test ran long enough to remove seasonal or one-off anomalies. 2. Paywall trigger psychology: Rather than limiting readers to a fixed number of free articles, an engagement-triggered paywall is activated after 45 seconds of reading. This targeted high-intent users, converting 38% compared to just 8% for a monthly article meter, resulting in 3x subscription revenue. 3. Newsletter timing by content type: A straight “send time” test (9 AM vs. 5 PM) produced negligible differences. The breakthrough came from matching content type to reader routines: morning briefings for early risers, deep-dive reads for the afternoon. Open rates increased by 22%, resulting in downstream gains in on-site engagement.     👀 Lessons from the Most Surprising A/B Test Wins of 2024 📈 Reflecting on 2024, here are three surprising A/B test case studies that show how experimentation can challenge conventional wisdom and drive conversions: 1️⃣ Social proof gone wrong: an eCommerce story 🔬 The test: An eCommerce retailer added a prominent "1,200+ Customers Love This Product!" banner to their product pages, thinking that highlighting the popularity of items would drive more purchases. ✅ The result: The variant with social proof banner underperformed by 7.5%! 💡 Why It Didn't Work: While social proof is often a conversion booster, the wording may have created skepticism or users may have seen the banner as hype rather than valuable information. 🧠 Takeaway: By removing the banner, the page felt more authentic and less salesy. ⚡ Test idea: Test removing social proof; overuse can backfire making users question the credibility of your claims. 2️⃣ "Ugly" design outperforms sleek 🔬 The test: An enterprise IT firm tested a sleek, modern landing page against a more "boring," text-heavy alternative. ✅ The Result: The boring design won by 9.8% because it was more user friendly. 💡 Why It Worked: The plain design aligned better with users needs and expectations. 🧠 Takeaway: Think function over flair.     A 6% revenue lift. 99% statistical significance. Ship it. It couldn't go wrong, could it? 🫣 In 2016, I was leading a product analytics team at Credit Karma. We ran an A/B test for a personal loans redesign. The results looked fantastic: - 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 (good for users). - 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝟲% (good for business). - 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝟵𝟵%. We should have ramped it up to 100% of users and closed out the test. However, we couldn't roll it out immediately due to other constraints. Over the next few weeks, I watched that 6% revenue lift drift down to 3%. It was still positive. It was still 99% significant. But the downward trend didn't sit right with me. I dug into the segments and found the reality: 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: +10% revenue. 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: -5% revenue. The aggregate number was positive only because the traffic was initially heavy with people seeing the design for the first time. Over time, as those people returned to the page, they fell into the negative bucket. 𝗜𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. We wouldn't have even known that it was due to a negative A/B test. Because we caught this, we redesigned the experience to address the issues for the returning users before rolling it out. Don't just blindly follow A/B tests and their implied results. While I love A/B testing, you need to be very careful to understand what you are truly measuring. (we did end up fixing the experience for returning users and deploying a win-win)

My favourite way to actually learn advanced methods: → read how top tech companies run experiments at scale. Here are 4 approaches you’ll see again and again in real experimentation platforms 👇 1) CUPED (variance reduction) Use pre-experiment behavior as a covariate to reduce noise → narrower CI → shorter tests. Nubank’s practical lessons from implementing CUPED: https://lnkd.in/dKHGktNt 2) CUPAC (ML-powered variance reduction) Same idea as CUPED, but the covariate comes from a prediction model (e.g., predicted revenue, ETA, or spend). Because the model can use many features, it often explains more variance than a single pre-period metric → even less noise and faster tests. Works great when the raw pre-period metric is weak/noisy.     Classic A/B testing relies on SUTVA (Stable Unit Treatment Value Assumption), which assumes one user’s decision doesn’t influence another’s. But what if your product is a social network, marketplace, or delivery service? Imagine you’ve improved the post-ranking algorithm on LinkedIn. Users in Group A (new algorithm) creates more content now. But this content spreads to Group B (old algorithm), distorting the results due to network effects. Here are two main ways to tackle this: 1. 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Randomize groups of users (clusters) instead of individual users. For social networks, the most popular approach is to define clusters based on interaction frequency — those who engage more often stay together in one cluster. 2. 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬: In this approach, everyone in the network receives the same treatment at any given time. Over time, we flip between test and control groups, compare metrics, and evaluate the impact. This is especially useful for location-based services (e.g., taxis or delivery). Even if you’re not working with a product that has potential network effects, understanding these methods will help you in future interviews!

    Experimentation lies at the core of effective digital product strategies. Vanguard’s recent tech blog explores how A/B testing and multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms each bring value to web optimization—and why choosing the right method matters for delivering fast, impactful results. The article presents a simulation study comparing three approaches: traditional A/B testing, Adaptive Allocation MAB, and Thompson Sampling MAB. For three or fewer variations, a properly powered A/B test often identifies the winner more quickly and is easier to implement and interpret. But once you move beyond four variations, bandit strategies like Thompson Sampling begin to outperform A/B testing—both in terms of speed and in minimizing “regret,” or lost opportunity cost. Thompson Sampling also tended to edge out Adaptive Allocation across most simulated scenarios, though the gap narrows when there’s significant performance uplift or a large number of variants. In short: use A/B when you want clarity and simplicity with a small set of variants; turn to MAB when you need efficiency at scale or rapid optimization. Of course, as this was a simulation-based study, some nuances and real-world dynamics may not be fully captured.     At Swiggy every product feature goes live via A/B testing. Experimentation is such a goldmine for decision-making, and as someone who didn't even know how to do it right a year back - below is my step-by-step approach to statistical analysis. The problem statement is - You’re working to improve the conversion rate for a product signup flow. You’ve implemented several changes—now, how do you figure out which one really makes a difference? 1️⃣ Define the Hypothesis Before diving into the test, clearly define what you're testing. Example: "Will the new signup flow increase the conversion rate (CVR)?" 2️⃣ Define Clear Metrics What does success look like? Are you aiming to increase the percentage of sign-ups, or reduce drop-offs at a specific funnel stage? Success Metric: Conversion rate or step completion rate. Check Metric: Have a secondary metric to ensure nothing else breaks (e.g., page load times or errors). 3️⃣ Test One Change at a Time Testing multiple changes (e.g., a new form layout and an incentive like a discount) at once won’t help you pinpoint which worked. 4️⃣ Split Your Traffic Determine the sample size you need and split users randomly into two groups: - Group A (Control): Users see the current version - Group B (Test): Users see the new version 5️⃣ Collect Data & Analyze Monitor key metrics like CTR, conversion rates, or churn - choose metrics tied to the business goal. Example: Track how the new signup form impacts the completion rate of the entire signup process. 6️⃣ Analyze Statistical Significance You see a 15% increase in conversions with the new form—great! But is it statistically significant, or could it be due to random variation? Use p-values and Z scores to validate if the changes are meaningful and not just due to chance. 7️⃣ Interpret Results & Take Action Once you’ve confirmed statistical significance, interpret the results in a business context. Formulate a Hypothesis Every test starts with a hypothesis. ◾ Will changing a call-to-action (CTA) button from green to red increase clicks? ◾ Will a new subject line improve email open rates? A clear hypothesis guides the entire process. 2. Create Variations Test one element at a time. ◾ Control (Version A): The original version ◾ Variation (Version B): The version with a change (e.g., a different CTA color) Testing multiple elements at once leads to unclear results. 3. Randomly Assign Users Split your audience randomly: ◾ 50% see Version A ◾ 50% see Version B Randomization removes bias and ensures accurate comparisons. 4.     How do you know what to perform an A/B test on? Here is a 5-step process: Step 1: Define Success – Determine what you will use to identify the winner. Focus on answering a specific question like What is your website for? If you could make your website do ONE thing better, what would it be? Use this as your guide to determine what metric you will use as a team to determine the winner of your test. Step 2: Identify Bottlenecks – Identify where users are dropping off and where you are losing the most momentum to move them through your desired series of actions. Step 3: Construct a Hypothesis – Use the places of bottlenecks to brainstorm modifications you can test. Focus on getting all your thoughts and ideas out. The sky is the limit at this stage. Step 4: Prioritize – Now that you have determined how to measure success, researched bottlenecks, and have a list of hypotheses about user behavior, use your intuition to choose what to test first. Sometimes, this means you need to think bigger than ROI. Do you need some quick wins to gain buy-in from others, or do not try an over-elaborate plan if you are using a new platform? Step 5: Test – Finally, you get to perform the A/B test. You will show randomly selected users the new variation(s), compare it to how users interact with the current site, and determine which is best using your definition of success from Step 1.
