Building a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server requires careful planning and implementation across several technical layers. This process involves more than just connecting to an LLM; it’s about building strong infrastructure that can handle complex agent workflows, manage memory, and facilitate real-time interactions. Here’s the development roadmap: Foundation Layer (Steps 1-3): - Establish the basic architecture. - Define the specific purpose of your server, whether it’s for agent memory, orchestration, or context storage. - Choose your backend stack, such as Informatica,Python with FastAPI, Node.js with Express, or Informatica for enterprise environments. - Next, structure your data schemas for context, messages, and agent metadata using JSON schema or protobuf for consistency. Monthly Book Review: Two reads for building real AI systems (from architecture to agents) 📘 𝗟𝗟𝗠𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 (conceptual, system-level view) In short, this one is about ‘how to think about LLMs in business systems’. It focuses on how LLMs are deployed and integrated into organizations - covering architecture, governance, scaling, evaluation, and real-world adoption patterns. I’d say it’s especially useful for shaping the mindset around frameworks and understanding how LLMs actually fit into enterprise infrastructure. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲: - Clear breakdowns of common architecture patterns (RAG, fine-tuning, deployment, governance, etc.) - Strong focus on integration with existing workflows and data systems - Practical discussion of risk, cost, and compliance trade-offs 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 (𝗶𝗺𝗼): ▪️Technical leads moving into architecture or management roles ▪️Engineers and managers who want to understand the full picture ▪️Non-technical leaders looking to understand how LLMs can fit into their current stack 📙 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 (hands-on and builder-focused) This one’s much more practical and tutorial-style. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀: ➤ Step-by-step use of LangChain, LlamaIndex, and similar frameworks ➤ Multi-agent workflows, reasoning loops, and task execution ➤ Code examples that bring together planning, memory, and real-world orchestration 𝗠𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: If you’re building anything agentic, this is a great one to keep on your desk. It does assume you’re already comfortable with ML foundations and some coding, but nothing very advanced. ***Both books are great, but serve different needs. You don’t need to read them in order, but if you plan to go through both, I’d start with LLMs in Enterprise and follow with AI Agents in Practice. It’s a natural flow from systems to agents. GPT-5 launched yesterday. 94.6% on AIME 2025. 74.9% on SWE-bench. As we approach the upper bounds of these benchmarks, they die. What makes GPT-5 and the next generation of models revolutionary isn’t their knowledge. It’s knowing how to act. For GPT-5 this happens at two levels. First, deciding which model to use. But second, and more importantly, through tool calling. We’ve been living in an era where LLMs mastered knowledge retrieval & reassembly. Consumer search & coding, the initial killer applications, are fundamentally knowledge retrieval challenges. Both organize existing information in new ways. We have climbed those hills and as a result competition is more intense than ever. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google’s models are converging on similar capabilities. Chinese models and open source alternatives are continuing to push ever closer to state-of-the-art. Everyone can retrieve information. Everyone can generate text. The new axis of competition? Tool-calling. Tool-calling transforms LLMs from advisors to actors. It compensates for two critical model weaknesses that pure language models can’t overcome. First, workflow orchestration. Models excel at single-shot responses but struggle with multi-step, stateful processes. Tools enable them to manage long workflows, tracking progress, handling errors, maintaining context across dozens of operations. Second, system integration. LLMs live in a text-only world. Tools let them interface predictably with external systems like databases, APIs, and enterprise software, turning natural language into executable actions. In the last month I’ve built 58 different AI tools. Email processors. CRM integrators. Notion updaters. Research assistants. Each tool extends the model’s capabilities into a new domain. The most important capability for AI is selecting the right tool quickly and correctly. Every misrouted step kills the entire workflow. When I say “read this email from Y Combinator & find all the startups that are not in the CRM,” modern LLMs execute a complex sequence. One command in English replaces an entire workflow. And this is just a simple one. Even better, the model, properly set up with the right tools, can verify its own work that tasks were completed on time. This self-verification loop creates reliability in workflows that is hard to achieve otherwise. Multiply this across hundreds of employees. Thousands of workflows. The productivity gains compound exponentially. The winners in the future AI world will be the ones who are most sophisticated at orchestrating tools and routing the right queries. Every time. Once those workflows are predictable, that’s when we will all become agent managers.

You don’t need to be an AI agent to be agentic. No, that’s not an inspirational poster. It’s my research takeaway for how companies should build AI into their business. Agents are the equivalent of a self-driving Ferrari that keeps driving itself into the wall. It looks and sounds cool, but there is a better use for your money. AI workflows offer a more predictable and reliable way to sound super cool while also yielding practical results. Anthropic defines both agents and workflows as agentic systems, specifically in this way: 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀: systems where predefined code paths orchestrate the use of LLMs and tools 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: systems where LLMs dynamically decide their own path and tool uses For any organization leaning into Agentic AI, don’t start with agents. You will just overcomplicate the solution. Instead, try these workflows from Anthropic’s guide to effectively building AI agents: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: The type A of workflows, this breaks a task down into sequential tasks organized and logical steps, with each step building on the last. It can include gates where you can verify the information before going through the entire process. 𝟮. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The multi-tasker workflow, this separates tasks across multiple LLMs and then combines the outputs. This is great for speed, but also collects multiple perspectives from different LLMs to increase confidence in the results. 𝟯. 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: The task master of workflows, this breaks down complex tasks into different categories and assigns those to specialized LLMs that are best suited for the task. Just like you don’t want to give an advanced task to an intern or a basic task to a senior employee, this find the right LLM for the right job. 𝟰. 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀: The middle manager of the workflows, this has an LLM that breaks down the tasks and delegates them to other LLMs, then synthesizes their results. This is best suited for complex tasks where you don’t quite know what subtasks are going to be needed. 𝟱. 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿-𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿: The peer review of workflows, this uses an LLM to generate a response while another LLM evaluates and provides feedback in a loop until it passes muster.
