A few years ago, I was on call with a hotshot consultant from Bain. She was walking me through the kind of projects she was working on. A few minutes in, I started suggesting ways to automate large parts of her work, saving her time and effort. While she agreed to most of my suggestions, she was clearly not very happy about it. --- Traditionally, you would not expect a management consultant to be creating automated systems to do their own work. In fact, in any non-tech role, self-automation is rare. The reason is two-fold: First, why would I want to make my own job redundant by automating most of it? Second, I don’t even know if my work can be automated, let alone how to do it. At Brainworks, more than half of our consulting projects involve some kind of automation – either we use it to do things faster, better, cheaper, and bigger in our projects or we create automation systems for the client to use directly and repeatedly. One client approached us wanting to expand their business through acquisitions. Their industry was highly niche with thousands of small players as potentials. Our task was to produce a list of the top 10 companies that he should look to acquire. Here’s how we automated a large chunk of the work. >> Used Google Maps API to create a list of potential companies in client’s target regions and niche – 6000 in number! >> Scraped data from each company’s website >> Created a framework to analyse the data and then used OpenAI’s API to process the huge volume of companies data based on the framework >> Narrowed down the targets to 100 and then proceeded with individual discussions to arrive at the final 10. What would have taken a month and 100X the cost was done in a couple of days and a laughable fraction of the cost. The job of a consultant is to solve problems. Tech is a huge enabler. But very few consultants have it embedded in their ways of thinking, let alone ways of working. Automation is one skill I suggest everyone needs to have, especially if you’re in a non-tech role.
