For knowledge-heavy roles, computer and math, business and finance, legal, office administration, AI could technically assist with 80 to 96% of the tasks today. Actual usage sits between 20 and 40%. Most people think of this as a workforce readiness problem. People aren't trained. Processes haven't adapted. Organisations are slow to change - But there's an underlying problem. I speak to enterprise technology leaders every day. The conversation is almost always the same. They know what AI can do. They've seen the demos. They've read the benchmarks. What they need is access to the latest tools so their teams can evaluate them, test them against real workflows, and work out how they'd actually fit into their operating reality. And they can't get to them fast enough. Vendor onboarding takes months. Compliance queues are 40 deep. Procurement cycles run in quarters. By the time a team can actually evaluate a new AI capability, the technology has moved on again. Look at Legal. 88% theoretical coverage. 15% observed. In financial services, that gap has a name: 3-6 months of vendor approvals, three compliance reviews, procurement and a security assessment before you even know it's a fit. This is Access Latency. The time it takes an enterprise to move from knowing a technology exists to having it available for evaluation. Think of it this way. Imagine debating the potential of Web 2.0 when most households didn't have broadband. The websites existed. The capability was real. But adoption couldn't grow because the access infrastructure wasn't there. That's where enterprise AI sits today. And here's what makes it compound. Teams can't build readiness for technology they can't access. You don't learn to use AI by reading about it. You learn by evaluating it, running it against your own data, stress-testing it in your own environment. When the access layer is broken, the readiness gap everyone is measuring grows downstream. Enterprises have a system of record for every function. Finance, HR, risk, customer data. But not for the process that determines which technology enters the estate. No evaluation infrastructure. No structured way to move from awareness to evidence to decision at the speed the technology demands. The good news is this is solvable. The organisations we work with that are closing this gap aren't doing anything exotic. They leverage evaluation infrastructure, a layer that lets teams access, test, and evidence technology decisions with the same governance and rigour they apply to everything else. AI is exposing something deep and uncomfortable. A collapse of organisational self-knowledge. The irony is painful. Companies want machines that can understand them. Many no longer understand themselves. Most leaders can talk confidently about strategy, budgets, or ambition. Very few can describe how work actually gets done. Ask the simplest questions: - Where does this decision originate - Which workflow shapes it - Which data sources influence it - Who exercises judgement - Where does the process break You can feel the room get quiet. This is the blind spot few of us want to acknowledge. Not because it is controversial, but because it is embarrassing.
