The real differentiator lies in how effectively we design and manage context. Context defines the agent’s role, behavior, reasoning, and decision-making. Without it, even the best models act inconsistently. With it, agents become reliable, explainable, and enterprise-ready. Here are the 6 essential types of context for AI agents:  1.     Stop worshipping prompts. Start engineering the CONTEXT. If the LLM sounds smart but generates nonsense, that’s not really “hallucination” anymore… That’s due to the incomplete context one feeds it, which is (most of the time) unstructured, stale, or missing the things that mattered. But we need to understand that context isn't just the icing anymore, it's the whole damn CAKE that makes or breaks modern AI apps. We’re seeing a shift where initially RAG gave models a library card, and now context engineering principles teach them what to pull, when to pull, and how to best use it without polluting context windows. The most effective systems today are modular, with retrieval, memory, and tool use working together seamlessly. What a modern context-engineered system looks like: • Working memory: the last few turns and interim tool results needed right now. • Long-term memory: user preferences, prior outcomes, and facts stored in vector stores, referenced when useful. • Dynamic retrieval: query rewriting, reranking, and compression before anything hits the context window. • Tools as first-class citizens: APIs, search, MCP servers, etc., invoked when necessary. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: In an AI coding agent, working memory stores the latest compiler errors and recent changes, while long-term memory stores project dependencies and indexed files. The tools fetch API documentation and run web searches when knowledge falls short. The result is faster, more accurate code without hallucinations. So, if you’re building smart Agents today, do this: • Start with optimizing retrieval quality: query rewriting, rerankers, and context compression before the LLM sees anything. • Separate memories: working (short-term) vs. long-term, write back only distilled facts (not entire transcripts) to the long-term memory. • Treat tools like sensors: call them when evidence is missing. Never assume the model just “knows” everything. • Make the context contract explicit: schemas for tools/outputs and lightweight, enforceable system rules. The good news is that your existing RAG stack isn’t obsolete with the emergence of these new principles - it is the foundation. The difference now is orchestration: curating the smallest, sharpest slice of context the model needs to fulfill its job… no more, no less. So, if the model’s output is off, don’t just rewrite the prompt. Review and fix that context, and then watch the model act like it finally understands the assignment!

    Your team just spent months optimizing AI prompts. But prompts aren’t your bottleneck anymore, context is. Most AI initiatives don’t fail because the model isn’t smart enough. They fail because the model doesn’t have the right information, at the right time, in the right structure. If your AI strategy is still centered on prompt engineering, you’re solving yesterday’s problem. Here’s the shift CXOs need to understand: Prompt Engineering vs. Context Engineering 1/ Prompt Engineering = What You Ask Clear instructions. Well-structured inputs. Defined tasks. It’s how most teams got started, and it still matters. But it works best in controlled environments: → Single interactions → Limited scope → Known inputs Prompt engineering is now table stakes, not strategy. 2/ Context Engineering = What the AI Knows Before You Ask This is the system around the model: → Retrieval pipelines → Knowledge bases → Business rules → Tool integrations → Memory (user history, prior decisions) Context engineering determines whether AI can operate reliably at scale. Prompts define intent. Context determines outcomes. 3/ The Production Gap No One Talks About AI that looks intelligent in a demo often collapses in production. Not because the model lacks intelligence, but because it lacks context. → It doesn’t know your customers → It doesn’t know your policies → It doesn’t know what just happened 2 minutes ago The bottleneck isn’t the model. It’s the information environment around it. 4/ Memory Is the Moat Without memory, every interaction starts from zero. With memory, AI compounds: → Learns from prior interactions → Adapts to your business rules → Improves over time Agents without memory aren’t intelligent. They’re expensive autocomplete. 5/ Think Like a System, Not a Prompt An LLM is just one component. The real system includes: → What data it can access → What tools it can use → What history it retains → What rules it follows You wouldn’t build enterprise software without managing data and state. Don’t build enterprise AI without managing context. 6/ This Is an Architecture Decision Context engineering isn’t a prompt problem. It’s an enterprise design problem. It touches: → Data strategy → Governance → Workflow design → System integration The organizations pulling ahead aren’t writing better prompts. They’re building better context systems. Bottom line: The next wave of AI advantage won’t come from better prompts. It will come from better context. The limitations of large language models (LLMs) are no secret: static training data, outdated responses, and an inability to leverage proprietary knowledge. 👉 WHY: The Frozen Encyclopedia Problem LLMs are like brilliant researchers trapped in a time-capsule library. They know everything up to their training cutoff (e.g., December 2024) but lack access to: - Company-specific protocols - Real-time data (inventory, pricing, trends) - Proprietary workflows or client-specific details - Emerging frameworks or internal documentation Without intervention, this knowledge gap widens daily. Context engineering addresses this by designing dynamic information flows that keep AI systems current and precise. 👉 WHAT: Context Engineering Explained Context engineering combines three disciplines to create adaptive AI systems: 1. Cognitive Science (how humans organize memories) 2. Information Retrieval (strategic data selection) 3. Distributed Systems (scalable architectures) Instead of retraining models—a costly and slow process—it focuses on "in-context learning (ICL)": selectively injecting relevant, fresh information directly into the AI’s "working memory" (the context window). This transforms LLMs from static repositories into agile problem-solvers. 👉 HOW: Architecting Intelligent Systems The paper introduces seven context types that form an AI’s “information diet”: - Static (reference docs, policies) - Dynamic (live data streams) - Conversational (dialog history) - Behavioral (user patterns) - Environmental (device/location) - Temporal (time-aware reasoning) - Latent (embedded model knowledge) Successful implementations use "reasoning-aware selection": algorithms that determine which context types are needed for each query, much like a researcher curates sources for a specific problem.     For years now, prompt engineering shaped how people worked with large language models. It was about finding the right phrasing to get predictable outputs. That approach worked for small tasks, but as models turned into agents that plan, use tools, and retain memory, the limits became obvious. One of Anthropic’s latest articles “𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘐 𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴”, introduces the next phase in this evolution, called context engineering. It explains that success now depends on how well we manage what goes inside the model’s attention window rather than how we word instructions. Anthropic describes context as everything the model sees while reasoning, including prompts, data, retrieved results, tool outputs, and message history. Every token consumes a portion of the model’s attention, and as the window expands, its focus gradually weakens. The new challenge is to curate that space carefully. Below are the main lessons from Anthropic’s work that stand out for anyone building practical AI systems. 1. Treat context as a limited resource. Adding more information does not improve accuracy. Use only what directly supports the current reasoning step. 2. Write system prompts like structured briefs. Divide them into clear parts for background, instructions, tools, and expected output. 3. Build small, distinct tools. Each tool should solve one problem and return compact, unambiguous results. 4. Use a few canonical examples instead of long lists of edge cases. Examples should teach reasoning, not overwhelm the model with detail. 5. Retrieve data just in time rather than all at once. Lightweight references such as file paths or queries keep the model’s focus clear. 6. Compact long interactions. Summarize the conversation and restart with the essentials so that the model stays coherent over long sessions. 7. Store information outside the context window. Structured notes or state files help maintain continuity across projects. 8. Use sub-agents for large tasks. Specialized agents can work on details while a coordinator manages direction and synthesis. 9. Balance autonomy with reliability. Some data should stay fixed for consistency, while other parts can be fetched dynamically when needed. 10. Focus attention on signal, not volume. Every token should contribute to the next action or decision. Prompt writing will still matter, but the real skill now lies in shaping context and deciding what enters the model, what stays out, and how information evolves as the agent works. The next generation of LLM Agents will depend less on clever wording and more on precise design of memory, retrieval, and context. Context engineering is becoming the foundation for reliable agents that think and act across long horizons with consistency and purpose.
