You Trust Your Chatbot With Everything. Should You? [NEW STUDY] Last night you told a chatbot something you haven’t told your doctor. This morning you dictated a legal strategy you haven’t shared with your lawyer. Right now, someone is working through a marital crisis, a financial anxiety, or a moment of real vulnerability with a system that feels like a confidant but is governed by nothing resembling professional secrecy. Today I am releasing a new study that I believe anyone who uses, builds, regulates, or reports on consumer AI should read. It is to my knowledge, the first comprehensive academic attempt to map what actually happens to your chatbot conversations inside the provider's walls, and to propose a fix. Through a comparative policy-and-interface analysis of 5 major services (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek), I examine the internal boundary: what happens to your conversation once you press Send. The study includes 4 side-by-side comparative tables that let you see, at a glance, how each provider handles training defaults, human review, advertising, and operational data sharing. Some of what I found: ▪ Every major provider now trains on consumer chats by default. One forces users into a trade-off between chat continuity and broader data reuse. At least two others allow a single thumbs-up/down click to silently override your opt-out for an entire conversation ▪ Every provider reserves human access to conversations. Only one warns you in the interface. Reviewed chats can be kept for up to three years after you delete them. ▪ Advertising has entered the chat. One provider launched in the U.S. ads with personalisation enabled by default, drawing on past chats and stored memories to select what you see. ▪ “We don’t sell your data” is genuine and important. But it does not tell you how many systems & people can access your conversation inside the provider’s own supply chain. This is not a landscape of abuse. It is a landscape of structural opacity. And opacity is what creates mistrust. The study proposes 10 practical recommendations to rebuild trust. At the centre sits "Sealed Mode": a clearly labelled pathway for high-stakes topics (starting with health) where the default architecture materially constrains what happens to your words. No training, no ads, siloed personalisation, strict retention, minimised human review, cryptographic hardening. Not a promise. A constraint. Because the most sensitive conversations deserve protections commensurate with the trust users place in them. I believe people should know when they're interacting with an automated agent instead of a human. Whether that means stating it upfront or clearly labeling where a response comes from, transparency matters for building trust. Something interesting happens in certain categories, like healthcare. When people know they're talking to an automated system, they'll ask questions they'd never ask another person. Questions about symptoms they're embarrassed about. Topics where they don't want to seem uninformed. That hesitation disappears when there's no judgment on the other end. In those situations, clearly identifying the interaction as automated actually makes the experience more valuable. At Capacity, we're not trying to replace human agents. Automation should handle the routine, repetitive work while humans focus on the exceptions and the complex problems that actually need their expertise. Just had an fascinating interaction with ŌURA support that highlights a critical lesson about AI and customer trust... I reached out about a lost ring and received what appeared to be a wonderfully empathetic response: "I'm truly sorry to hear that you've lost your Oura ring. I understand how disappointing this must be for you..." The tone was perfect. Human. Compassionate. Then came the plot twist at the end: "This response was generated by Finn, Oura's Virtual assistant." Here's why this matters for anyone building AI into their customer experience: The response itself wasn't the problem. It was actually quite good. The problem was the setup - it felt like being led to believe you're talking to Sarah from customer support, only to discover it's AI after you've opened up about your situation. It's a bit like someone wearing a convincing mask through an entire conversation, then dramatically pulling it off at the end. Even if the conversation was great, you still feel... weird about it. So when they sent me their customer satisfaction survey, I decided to have some fun. I used ChatGPT to write my responses and signed it off, "This response was generated by ChatGPT, Nate's Virtual assistant." But there's a serious point here: Transparency about AI usage isn't just an ethical choice - it's a strategic one. When customers discover they haven't been talking to the human they thought they were, it erodes trust. And trust, once lost, is incredibly expensive to rebuild. The lesson? If you're using AI in customer service: - Be upfront about it from the start - Let customers know they're talking to AI before the conversation, not after - Keep the empathy (AI can be both transparent AND compassionate) Your customers will appreciate the honesty, and you'll build stronger relationships because of it. As AI becomes integral to our daily lives, many still ask: can we trust its output? That trust gap can slow progress, preventing us from seeing AI as a tool. Transparency is the first step. When an AI system suggests an action, showing the key factors behind that suggestion helps users understand the “why” rather than the “what”. By revealing that a recommendation that comes from a spike in usage data or an emerging seasonal trend, you give users an intuitive way to gauge how the model makes its call. That clarity ultimately bolsters confidence and yields better outcomes. Keeping a human in the loop is equally important. Algorithms are great at sifting through massive datasets and highlighting patterns that would take a human weeks to spot, but only humans can apply nuance, ethical judgment, and real-world experience. Allowing users to review and adjust AI recommendations ensures that edge cases don’t fall through the cracks. Over time, confidence also grows through iterative feedback. Every time a user tweaks a suggested output, those human decisions retrain the model. As the AI learns from real-world edits, it aligns more closely with the user’s expectations and goals, gradually bolstering trust through repeated collaboration. Finally, well-defined guardrails help AI models stay focused on the user’s core priorities. A personal finance app might require extra user confirmation if an AI suggests transferring funds above a certain threshold, for example. Guardrails are about ensuring AI-driven insights remain tethered to real objectives and values. By combining transparent insights, human oversight, continuous feedback, and well-defined guardrails, we can transform AI from a black box into a trusted collaborator. Transparency in AI (60-sec tutorial) AI is everywhere now. But most people don’t know when it’s being used, how it works, or why it made a choice. Here’s what real transparency looks like: 1. Disclosure Say when AI is involved, when it's reasonable expected. • If a video was made by AI, label it. • If a chatbot is answering, it should say so up front. On the other hand, if you used AI to help you write an email or post (like I did here), then you probably don't need to label it as such - since that's commonplace now. But still make sure to review and edit the writing as needed. 2. Explainability Don’t just show results. Explain them. • If an AI gives a “risk score,” break down what that means. • Spell out the strengths and limits of the system. • Make sure users can check if the AI’s answer matches their own judgment. When people understand how AI thinks, they trust it more, and they use it better. 3. Traceability Keep a record of every big AI decision. • Note when AI helped approve a request or set a priority. • Log who reviewed the outcome. • Make it easy to go back and see how a decision was made. This protects your team and your company. It also keeps you compliant with the law, especially in finance and healthcare. How to make transparency real at work: • Label all AI-generated content when expected. • Ask for plain-language explanations before you trust AI results. • Document every major AI-assisted decision and who checked it. Studies prove it: when people know how AI works, they feel less anxious about being replaced. They feel more in control. They trust the system (and the company) more. Trust in AI is plummeting - Yet it's the single biggest driver for AI retention. Helping your users understand the WHY in your AI's reasoning - builds trust. Transparent AI doesnt mean sharing the 'secret sauce' in your AI system. Far from it. It's about enabling your users to make informed decisions about their next action. - Is the decision a good one - accurate, based on the right data? - How to give feedback to adjust your AI's output - Should they override the AI's decision? User testing the micro-copy and micro-interactions that show people your AI's decision making is the ONLY way to know if its effective. Basic testing - - Test with a very diverse set of your user base - including edge cases. - Get them to test the AI feature as you normally would. - Then ask them to explain how the AI made the decision/recommendation. ** If they can't ALL explain it back to you with reasonable accuracy.
