💡 Can Culture Shape How We Talk to AI Chatbots? To whom are we more honest about our deep feelings - humans or AI chatbots? Some studies suggest that people feel more comfortable sharing personal emotions with AI because they don’t fear being judged. But other studies find that, when it comes to serious topics like suicidal thoughts, people still prefer to talk to real humans, such as therapists. These suggest that there are likely individual preferences in how people disclose their emotions. 🤔 One factor that may play a role is culture. Here, I would like to note that comparing 'Eastern' and 'Western' users leads to oversimplification, so please consider the following discussion with this limitation in mind. So, how do people in different cultures express their emotions to AI chatbots? A 2023 study (attached below) examined over 150,000 utterances from users of the AI chatbot SimSimi, which has 400 million users across 111 languages. The study compared users from three Western countries (U.S., UK, Canada) and five Eastern countries (Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand), focusing on how users discussed depressive feelings. Some interesting patterns emerged: ➡️ Eastern users were more likely to disclose their current depressive feelings directly (e.g., “I am feeling sad”) and ask the chatbot for ways to cope with the feelings. ➡️ Western users more often expressed emotional struggles through life difficulties, social disconnection, or self-doubt (e.g., “I hate my life”). ➡️ On average, users in the Eastern countries disclosed both positive and negative emotions more frequently than those in the Western countries. This is contrary to cultural stereotypes that Eastern users are less emotionally expressive. The researchers suggest that users from Eastern cultures may perceive the chatbot as a private, emotionally safe space where they can express their feelings more freely without fear of social judgment. 🙂 At the same time, it is important to note that users in Western countries also disclosed emotions, but often in different ways. 💡 SimSimi was not designed to address mental health symptoms. Yet, many users still disclosed their emotions to it, raising important ethical questions. 🤔 Then, should we, and how can we, design social chatbots that respond appropriately to different emotional disclosure styles? For example, a chatbot that offers sensitive support for direct emotional expressions and specific coping strategies might be most helpful for some users. In other regions, users may benefit more from a system that can detect depressive emotions through conversations about daily life struggles. Cross-cultural research in this area remains very limited, so greater attention is needed to understand the diverse emotional expression styles people use when interacting with AI across different cultural contexts.

When AI Reinvents Culture — And Why We Must Correct It Artificial intelligence is expanding faster than our cultural imagination. It doesn’t arrive as perfect neutral code. It arrives carrying the imprints of the data it was trained on — data shaped by particular histories, perspectives, and biases. This is why generative models have been caught reproducing stereotypes across languages. Margaret Mitchell, Chief Ethics Scientist at Hugging Face, showed in the SHADES dataset how models trained largely on Western material not only echo biases, but amplify them and spread them into cultures where those distortions never existed. What begins as an imbalance in English becomes a global distortion. The problem isn’t abstract. Google’s Gemini system recently generated images that placed Black individuals in Nazi-era scenes. What was meant as a correction for representation turned into an overcompensation that produced something worse: a collapse of historical context. A single misaligned adjustment revealed how fragile cultural nuance can be inside a system that doesn’t truly understand it. Yet research also points to a way forward. Cornell University demonstrated that a simple instruction — a cultural prompt telling the model to respond as if it were from a specific region — reduces bias across more than one hundred countries. A single sentence shifts the worldview of the machine, altering not only the answers it gives, but the lens through which it perceives the question. The lesson here is clear. AI is not culture-agnostic. It carries the shadows of its data. When these shadows are left unchecked, they grow larger, distorting meaning, undermining trust, and turning diversity into caricature. But it is also clear that cultural tuning is possible. With deliberate design, AI can learn to sense difference instead of flattening it, to honor nuance instead of erasing it. If AI is to serve globally, it must learn to speak culturally. Otherwise it does not bridge divides. It multiplies them.

We can program cultural empathy into AI if we simply ask for it. Standard prompts get standard biases but persona prompts change everything. While AI models default to the cultural norms of the language they are speaking researchers discovered a way to override these factory settings. By explicitly prompting GPT to assume the role of a person living in China the model adjusted its English responses to become more holistic and interdependent. This paper shows that this simple "cultural prompt" made the AI's English output mimic the cultural depth usually found only in its Chinese responses. This suggests that cultural fluency is a prompt engineering skill we all need to learn to prevent our tools from strictly reinforcing a single worldview. 🔥 Can We Build Inclusive Agentic Systems Without Inclusive Training Data? When I first heard people talk about agentic AI — machines that can reason, decide, and act on our behalf — I was fascinated. But then one question hit me hard: How can we expect inclusive intelligence from exclusive data? I see this every day. The more I use these systems, the clearer it becomes — they speak one cultural language fluently, and stumble on the rest. The logic feels Western. The tone feels corporate. The empathy feels… selective. Let’s break down why that matters: → Most training data still comes from English-speaking, digitally rich nations. → The behaviors encoded reflect a small slice of humanity. → The missing perspectives aren’t “edge cases” — they’re billions of people. Now imagine giving that system agency. A biased chatbot can misinform. A biased agent can act — negotiate, reject, decide — without ever seeing the full picture of humanity it represents. So what’s the way forward? In my opinion, we can’t fix this with PR statements or prompt engineering — we need infrastructure-level inclusion: ✅ Build decentralized data pipelines where local communities own their voice and context. ✅ Incentivize global annotation networks that reflect cultural nuance. ✅ Create regulatory sandboxes for testing fairness dynamically, not statistically. ✅ And most importantly — give non-English regions a stake in how foundational models evolve. It turns out that when you ask ChatGPT about values (things like trust, authority, fairness, etc.), it answers like someone from Finland, not Jordan. Or from the Netherlands, but not Ghana. I came across this nugget in the research paper below on cultural bias and LLM alignment. It's from September 2024 (ancient history in AI time), but many of the threads it pulls on are still present in the most recent model updates. The authors tested GPT-4o, 4-turbo, 4, 3.5-turbo, and 3 against survey data from 107 countries and found that all models exhibited cultural values similar to those of English-speaking and Protestant European countries. This matters because when millions of people use AI to write emails or make decisions, they're getting cultural filters that may not match how they actually think or build trust. These AI-generated responses influence communication, but also the level of interpersonal trust between communicators. And small cognitive biases accumulate and shape systems over time. The fix? Researchers found you can reduce bias by being explicit about cultural context in prompts. That's a good start, but we need systems designed from the beginning around different cultural values, not ones that just tolerate them. Culture shapes how people think, communicate, and work. Excited about GenAI? LLMs? Are you building an AI tool that runs on ChatGPT as the foundation model? Then let's have a serious talk about how worldviews and cultural norms work their ways into LLMs. It's only when we understand the issues, that we can work to address them and improve deployment, effectiveness, and adoption. We need a way to start to unpack LLMs and how responsible it is, or is not, to use them cross-culturally. If we have LLMs as the sociotechnical powerhouse of, say, education use cases--think tutoring children, providing advice on long form essays, students using them as a starting point for research, and more--is this epistemological colonization all over again? How have people been solving these issues in practice? I'd love to hear! How can we create culturally-appropriate AI tools that utilize LLMs? Are you fine tuning? Are you using RAG? This research demonstrates that LLMs embody particular values running underneath those simple prompt/response patterns we are increasingly familiar with. Research assessed: LLM models (ChatGPT3.5 and 4 and Bard) cultural alignment, or misalignment, in American, Saudi Arabian, Chinese, and Slovak cultural contexts. The 6 cultural dimensions researched included: 1. Power Distance (PDI) 2. Individualism versus Collectivism (IDV) 3. Masculinity versus Femininity (MAS) 4. Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI) 5. Long Term versus Short Term Orientation (LTO) 6. Indulgence versus Restraint (IVR) Findings: - ChatGPT3.5 and 4 have strongest alignment with US cultural values and general misalignment with the three other countries. Bard has greatest misalignment with US values. Implications: - Culturally insensitive LLMs can erode user trust, thereby decreasing adoption over time. - More systemic technical solutions are needed, perhaps culturally-sensitive corpora for training.
