    A few years back, I ran a forecast error report for a global pharma client.   The overall accuracy looked healthy. But inventory write-offs told a different story.   We weren’t losing money on the forecast—we were losing it on the wrong products. So we zoomed in with a sharper lens. We didn’t just look at errors.   We classified SKUs—A, B, C.   Then overlaid forecast bias on each class. And that’s when the picture turned clear. One A-class SKU—high revenue, high velocity—had a persistent under-forecast bias.   Every quarter.   Which meant constant stockouts and lost sales. Meanwhile, several C-class items had over-forecast bias, inflating dead inventory. Same metric (bias), but now targeted at SKU importance.   That’s where real planning intelligence begins. We acted.   Adjusted safety stocks for C SKUs.   Improved forecast models for A SKUs.   And in just one quarter, we slashed working capital by 9% and boosted service levels by 6%. Because in supply planning, accuracy without relevance is just noise.   It’s bias + ABC classification that turns noise into strategy. But do these adjustments actually improve accuracy? 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗱 (𝗙𝗩𝗔) is a quantitative metric that measures whether manual or system-driven adjustments enhance or degrade forecast accuracy. The goal? 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. How to Calculate FVA?     FP&A teams say they track forecast accuracy. Very few do it consistently, dynamically, and at scale. Usually it’s a static table. One month. One snapshot. No context for trends or bias. That’s a problem—because forecast accuracy only matters over time. This is where rolling dynamic arrays change the game. Instead of manually rebuilding accuracy tables each month, you can use functions like FILTER, TAKE, DROP, SEQUENCE, and LET to create a rolling comparison between Forecast and Actuals that automatically expands as new periods are added. Here’s the practical setup: ◽ Store Forecasts and Actuals in structured tables ◽ Use FILTER to align periods that exist in both datasets ◽ Apply TAKE or DROP to define a rolling window (last 3, 6, or 12 months) ◽ Calculate variance, % variance, or absolute error dynamically ◽ Let the array spill—no copy-paste, no broken ranges The result is a live accuracy engine that updates the moment a new actual hits. Why this matters in FP&A: ◽ You see directional bias, not just point-in-time misses ◽ Rolling windows prevent one-off anomalies from distorting performance ◽ Leaders get trend-based insight instead of static variance noise ◽ Your accuracy KPIs stay intact during reforecasts and plan refreshes In short: you stop reporting accuracy and start managing it.     Forecast failures rarely happen in the market they start in the meeting. The assumptions appear solid, and the CRM data is clean, with high confidence in the room.
