When Not to Apply LSS
Is LSS the only way of solving problems? Should we apply the technique of LSS for very basic problems? These are some of the questions faced by people working in industry today with LSS becoming a buzz world.
I feel LSS is the tool required for complex issues. If we apply it for simple issues, then it is like killing a mosquito with missile. So what are the problem solving techniques available besides LSS? Where these techniques should be applied?
Proposed below is a basic structure of usage of different Problem-Solving techniques.
Before selection, we need to access the problem/issue on the following two scales :-
- Returns- Impact on business if this problem gets solved.
- Complexity- Type of resources required/number of variables for solving the same. Can an operator working on shop solve or we need to create a dedicated team of experts for solution?
Once the same is plotted, then four type of techniques can be used (Refer to the above diagram) :-
- Just Do it –Here the person/operator working can find the solution and can implement without support from any other member. Here not much analysis is required.
- Kaizen- Here basic analysis of issue is required and this can be solved by the Cross Functional teams working in an area.
- 8D/QC Story- This requires high level of skills and dedicated team to resolve the issue. It is advisable to have experts as team members while going for QC story. The solution implementation may also require budget.
- LSS (Lean Six Sigma)- They are complex problems and need to be done under Six sigma Expert help. They require lots of data capturing and high level of analytical tools usage (DoE etc). The solution implementation may also require a big budget.
Hope by using these techniques , you will be able to resolve issues with least level of efforts required.
Great insight. Many complex problems are fascinating but low return. This kind of analysis visually demonstrates the futility of solving them just for the satisfaction.
Good read Gaurav Mathur. Thanks for sharing this.
Nice one! Also believe if there’s no daily management in place or standard work is missing, first step is probably just to apply that, like a just do it, then get into problem solving mode.
Great insights Gaurav. Indeed many organisations try to fit clothing(LSS) to the body(problem) rather than buy the right clothes for the problem. It’s like using sword where actually needle is required. This even frustrates the employees as they put in huge efforts without really getting any return. Looking forward to more insights.
