What is Raspberry Pi?

Raspberry Pi is a little single board computer, a tiny credit sized device with so many uses. You must have heard about the first computer ENIAC, it was as big as a room and now talking about Raspberry Pi it is one of the cheapest and smallest computers. In spite of being small in size, Raspberry Pi opens the door to almost infinite possibilities. It is developed by Raspberry Pi foundation in the United Kingdom. Though initially it was designed for kids to learn programming and in response to a lack of computer literate youth and to make computing more widespread in classrooms, homes and the third world. But later when the geeks found about Pi they got the hold of it and started doing all sort of cool projects with it and the rest is history.

10 million Raspberry Pi units have been shipped since its debut in 2012 and even kids are producing some really cool projects. Many users have gone as far as to build custom enclosures for the Pi turning it into a fully portable retro gaming machine supporting more consoles than you'd find at RadioShack back when that still existed. I mean though you aren't going to be able to run Call of duty at maximum settings but it turns out that Pi is a great for retro games of all sorts as open source projects like retro pi are capable of running games for everything from the Atari to the Nintendo 64.

Now talking about its specifications let me introduce the Raspberry Pi 3 with a new quad-core 1.2 gigahertz 64-bit processor, 1 GB of RAM and onboard Wireless LAN along with Bluetooth. That's pretty amazing! The 40-pin general purpose input and output or GPIO which allows you to connect everything from weather stations to robots makes it more efficient. You can try to use the pi as a general-purpose PC for web surfing and YouTube but it is not preferable as the default Linux distro that serves as the pi operating system called Raspbian isn't that great for everyday use. Still you can do a lot of things with pi like you can make your own network storage, media centre by embedding pi with hard drives. You can even click photographs with it by simply adding a camera module to it, moreover add a webcam and make your own home security system! It's cheap, portable, robust and connects to real world objects so easily. It's the perfect machine for making projects. There’s nothing stopping you from making something as crazy as your own mind using the Raspberry Pi. Just don't try to eat it as it is Pi not a pie!
