What I've learnt so far.... version 2!
Things I've discovered since working in the manufacturing/engineering industry:
• Shoes STILL do not last however; I now have, not one, but two, swanky sets of safety shoes from the lovely guys over at Rock Fall.
• I now look a little less lost, as I understand the industry better than I did back in 2015. I now get some of the ‘lingo’ and can join in conversations. However; I am still having to stop myself smiling, when a Poka-Yoke is mentioned – my mind still sings “ooooh the hokey cokey”
• Asking questions is still okay. I hold my hand up to not knowing things and ask to sometimes be treated as a complete novice, so I can learn. People respect the honesty & are always willing to take the time to explain.
• You will always find ear protectors in every single pocket of workwear, along with the occasional nut or bearing… this is still the case.
• Being prepared to be amazed all the time. Every single day, I either see an application in person, on a video or one of my colleagues casually mention, how they installed a robot in some insane location. 2 years ago, a robot wasn’t necessarily on my radar; these days I expect to see them everywhere, doing everything…. Roll on robot ironing!
I still genuinely find engineering fascinating and I'm grateful to anybody who takes the time to show me what they do and talk me through their manufacturing process. I'm also still as passionate about inspiring others into this sector, nearly as much as I am, about people using our products ;-)
But, on a serious note, I work for a fantastic company; who enable me to grow & progress in my career. I'm given the freedom to carve my own path and find a way that works for me. I am also surrounded by years of knowledge & experience and a bunch of hard working, yet fun loving folk.
Anyway, let’s see what the next 2 years bring, and I’ll review again!!
Great article Tara. People love to tell you about they know about and there's nothing like talking to someone who is passionate about what they do.
The great thing about engineering and manufacturing is that everyone is passionate about their work. Everyone I've met in the industry will be more than happy to talk you through their manufacturing process and if you're at their works show you. And yes, there are always nuts, bolts, swarf, circlips etc. in your pockets. Asking questions is always OK, as they say the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!
Always remember "success is a journey, not a destination"
Great article, is there a link to version 1 to see the progress?
Now you have mastered Poka Yoke when are you going for your Black Belt?
