What does a typical Cloud offer
Links to previous articles:
As a business owner, we decided to rent virtual server rooms for a fee. It reduces overhead costs of maintaining server machines, network devices, and storage backups within our office space.
Let's simplify.
A typical cloud provider offers servers with data processing capability (Compute - C), data storage systems (Storage - S), and networks that connect these machines. With internet access, you will be able to access computing and storage resources if you have an account with the cloud provider.
Depending upon the type of computing machines, the amount of data stored, and the speed of the network, you will pay the rental fee on fixed intervals, say a monthly fee.
As a business owner, do we need dedicated servers? What if our needs are less?
Since the cloud provider understands different businesses have different needs and economies of scale,
- they offer options to rent an entire server(s) dedicated to your business - See Baremetal
- or you may choose to share the server with other business owners using Virtual machines.
So what does a typical cloud provider offer,
- Access to computing, storage and network resources with dedicated accounts
- Ability to remotely add, remove and configure cloud resources
- Monitoring your usage and generate your monthly invoice
- Tools and guides to operate the cloud resources along with recommendations for data security and backups
Next we will see different cloud genres.
Footnote:
There are businesses that rent Baremetal servers and add their own virtualization software for specific needs.
