Turning the wrong turns

Turning the wrong turns

We’ve all made decisions we’ve regretted.

We’ve all said “yes” to a job, a person or a situation which we know in our gut (or sixth-sense) that it isn’t right for us to do so. But, still we do it. Somehow a part of us kicks in - our heart, emotion or our body overrules the wisdom of our mind and we find ourselves on a path that was never intended.

There are times that these wrong turns can be detrimental to our well-being. They cause stress and put us in danger of losing ourselves indefinitely. Other times we immediately realize our mistaken direction and quickly decide right there and then to go back to the beginning and restart again.

Either way, when we find ourselves in such sticky situation, only we have the power to declare that we took the wrong turn and come to  decide when it's time to get back on track.

These tips may help:

·     Be honest with ourselves.

Admit, as soon as possible, we made a choice that led us down the wrong path. Nothing will change until we personally acknowledge the decision we made is no longer working for us anymore. Be willing to take 100% responsibility for the choices we make for our life.

·     Plan an exit strategy.

Start planning the next step once we have admitted to ourselves that we are on the wrong path, decide how we are going to get back on track. In some situations, it may be necessary for us to stop what we are doing immediately. Most of the time, a fast exit may lead to even more stress and poor decision making. Take the necessary time to think clearly on what it is that we do want, then get back on track one step at a time.

·     Be gentle with ourselves.

Guilt, self-blaming and beating ourselves up will only damage our self-esteem. Realize everyone makes mistakes; even the most successful individuals take several wrong turns before getting it right. Life is ten percent how we make it and ninety percent how we take it.

·     Look for the lesson.

There is always a lesson to be learned, and occasionally, even a blessing in disguise. What did that wrong turn teach us about ourselves? Do we need to listen to our gut more and to others’ opinion less? Do we need to value and respect ourselves more? Do you need to redefine what success means to us instead of living up to the expectations of others?

Everyone deserves a chance to clean up their mistakes.

Life is full of second chances. Be willing to take them! Let go of the past and commit to do whatever it takes to get back on the right track. The wisdom we gained from taking a wrong turn will help in doing better next time.
